Thoughts for my first post...

Aug 23, 2014

I should start with a little intro about myself. I am a 29 year old female who has struggled with weight my entire life. I have recently begun the WLS journey. I had my orientation in June 2014, a meeting with the RN in July, and my first appointments with the RD and SW in August. All of my blood work is fine, and I had a sleep study last December which showed no mechanical sleep deficiencies. Hooray!! :)

I've been making progress lately with my eating, which has led to about a five pound weight loss since my first meeting with my dietitian. She has me strictly following the Canada food guide as follows (for an adult female):

7-8 servings of vegetables and fruit

6-7 servings of grain

2-3 servings of milk/alternatives

2-3 servings of meat/alternatives

The hardest thing has been portion control. I have been weighing and measuring everything I put in my mouth, which I think will be good practice for life post-op. I have scheduled an appointment to get a grocery store tour with the dietitian at my local store. I have also signed up for a free workshop series on managing food cravings and change. Also, I am planning on attending my local WLS support group in September, and am hoping to join a supportive network in my area. My next series of appointments are scheduled for early October.

My current short term goal is to lose another 23 pounds over the next 3 months by sticking to the food guide above. One thing that has kept me motivated is that my SW warned me that some surgeons will not operate if you can't lose weight before surgery. Whether it's true or not,  it is excellent motivation for keeping me on track. I have also been watching a lot of the video bloggers, who have documented their journey through the process.

I think those are all of my important updates for now.

Meg~
