Overall, I'd say it was average. |

As always, the people are what makes the hospital. I had some great nurses, I also had some downright horrible nurses. All of the aides that came in were pleasant. |

It was very nice, and they took care of me quite well. The only issue I had was that I was in a HUGE room (4 patients), and one of the patients in the other side of the room had WAY too many visitors too often, and they were quite loud. They also brought fast food into the room, which didn't really work for me since the smell of any food made me really queasy the first few days. |

| Comments: |
The nurses are understaffed. They are wonderful and caring, but being a nurse myself, I could tell that they are understaffed. It would take an hour to get pain meds (I only wanted Tylenol) because they were so busy. I was put into a room with an older, confused woman who kept me up all night. She was sweet, but I wish I would have been put on the bariatric floor. The decor was institutional and not very appealing. |

Everyone, from reception desk to lab technicians, to nurses and doctors and aides and meal servers... everyone seemed genuinely concerned and caring. After the 1st night, when I was constantly monitored and was unable to get any sleep, then I was moved to a regular room and I can truly say--sleep is the best medicine. |

I was in recovery for 6 hours due to the fact that they did not have a bed available in the 4700 section. This is the area for bariatric patients. When I was finally taken to my room at 10 pm, it was a room with 4 beds partitioned by a sliding door...2 on each side. I was told it was a better room because the toilet seat is higher. 2 of my roomates on the other side of the wall were sisters who had the bypass surgery together...they were wonderful and the sweetest ladies. My roomate in the bed next to me was not a WLS patient....she had another type of surgery. What I did not realize at 10 at nite was that she moved from the bed I got to the one next to the window (which should have been mine). But they did not change the phone!! (I don't think she "officially" changed..just moved over.) The next day I got about 20 calls that were for HER!! I could not rest. She also had at least 10 visitors, laughing and bringing food (!!!) to her. It was like a party. How rude. I did not really complain because I was there one night, (I had the lap-band but if I had to stay another night, I would have.!) They were loud and obnoxious and one women who was visiting her proceeded to tell me that she knew many friends who had the lap-band and it just did not work.....and this was the morning after I had my lap-band procedure. AND...she then she proceeded to tell me how good her sesame chicken salad was. If I was not so out of it, I would have told her to leave the room..or worse! However, the NURSING STAFF WAS FANTASTIC. They were there when needed and took excellent care of me. I would not hesitate going to this wing of the hospital. My roomate situation was, I am sure, an isolated incident. |

My entire experience was fantastic. The pre-op care was wonderful, my anesthesiologist was kind and caring, the nurses going into surgery were so terrific and Dr. Bilof my surgeon is the best. My post surgery care was OUTSTANDING. Nurse Manager Myrna Lim, RN of the Bariatric Unit, Danielle Hill,RN and Jocelyn (can't remember your last name Joce, sorry!) were all fantastic, kind, informed, helpful and so sensitive and wonderful. My nurses were also outstanding. Helpful, sensitive, considerate. I can't say enough about them. Natalyia, Nina, Mary Jo, June and Gwen were the absolute BEST nurses I could have had. What a fabulous team, I could not have done it without them! |

| First selected Surgeon (Dr. Nusbaum) and this was the only hospital he used -- but for good reason. |

This hospital is a role model for the treatment and care of overweight patients and it shows. |
| Comments: |
Overall, St. Barnabas provided excellent facilities for handling and caring for overweight patients and I would agree with its recent designation as a role model for the rest of the nation.
The only 2 areas that I wouldn't list as excellent were as follows:
1) I exceeded the hospital weight limit for thier MRI. As a result, when I came down with a virus that spiked my white blood cell counts a week after the surgery, Dr. Nusbaum had to go back in and visually inspect for leakage because I couldn't use the MRI. Only 2 hospitals in NJ, though, apparently have an MRI that I could fit on at 450lbs.
2) Parking Lot needs to be repaved, the pot holes and uneven patching present a safety hazard and could cause someone to roll an ankle. |

Staff was friendly and polite. I stayed overnight. My only complaint was that as a gastric banding patient, I was lumped into the same room with bypass patients. And my roommate (Bypass) was not comfortable and in pain. Since I felt well, I ended up tending to her instead of the nurses. |

| Comments: |
I would go to any hospital that my surgeon, Dr. Nusbaum, operated out of. I'm more concerned about the excellence of the surgeon who is operating on me than I am about the quietness of my room. That being said - most of the staff that took care of me for my gastric bypass were wonderful. There was one nurse who didn't have a clue and upset me greatly. My blood sugar was having trouble stabalizing and he "reprimanded" me saying how did I expect my blood sugar to be normal if I didn't eat anything!!! Excuse me???? This was 1 day post-op and the only thing I was allowed was ice chips, diet jello and broth. Being a nurse myself (and being cranky because my blood sugar was low) I let him have it - verbally, and told him to get my surgeon on the phone and get an order for some intravenous dextrose to bring my sugar back up!! That was in November of 2004. I was just in again for some adhesions, March 2006. My nurse, Gwen, was a God send. She was wonderfully attentive and caring. The rooms are small, and there are no showers in the rooms - you have to use communal showers in the hallway but as I stated earlier as long as thats where my surgeon goes thats where I go. |

I was very dissapointed, since i have had other hospital stays in different areas. |
| Comments: |
It sucked. The staff was not helpful. It took many hours for them to respond to my needs. I was glad my cousing came and helped out, she was even amazed how unresponsive. I sat in the bathroom for about a half hour waiting for products so I can use the lavoratory and at one point they said they didn't have them. I waited for 4-5 hours for pain medicine for my throat, the surgeon was upset cause they gave me throat lozengers instead of a pain spray for my throat. I didn't even realize. that throat lozenger could have gotten stuck. BAD EXPERIENCE. then when i was moved i was in a room with a patient who was dillusional and I had to keep taking care of her, she kept on pulling her catheter out, and I had to keep calling for the nurses and they wouldnt even respond, I spent most of my last night in the hallway cause it was upseting me terribly because my roomate wasnt being taken care of either, and she had special needs. IT SUCKED! Oh yeah, it was filthy dirty! |

Should any problems have occured, I knew that their heart and other units are some of the best on the east coast. |

The bathroom in my room was dirty, the garbage was only emptied once a day, and it needed much more attention than that. The showers were GROSS. Not just in need of a freshining up, but totally Gross. Old soap and Shampoo left in the shower, patient electrodes from the telemetry monitors stuck to the walls and floors, just gross!!
I was there for 3 nights and had 4 different nurses, 2 of them, Nina and Pat were GREAT, the other 2 I can't rate because they didn't even tell me their name. |

Tops for the area. In my experience, I think there are a few hospitals in Bergen county that cater better to their patients and appear more hotel-like, but I think it's a fine hospital. |
| Comments: |
The nursing staff was phenominal. I didn't have much pain, but I felt they were very responsive to my needs. I worried before going into the hospital about getting stuck in a quad... and I did. Turned out just fine though. I had lovely roommates and the company was nice.
My only two issues with the hospital:
1) I question their judgement on the meals: coffee (which I don't drink), jello (which I hate) and diet ginger ale with every meal?! I was repeatedly told soda was a no-no. When I asked about it, I was sort of given the brush-off and told to wait til it got flat. Would a spot of Crystal Light or diet iced tea have killed them? Certainly we Bariatric patients weren't breaking the bank with our food requirements. It seems the least they could do. Oh, and at "dinner" in place of jello we got the most awful, watery chicken broth. It was pitifully bad.
2) I ended up staying in recovery for about 6 hours after my surgery because my blood pressure was out-of-wack. They would not let my husband stay with me despite repeated requests for him. He was allowed in for about 10 minutes after a few hours and then they finally let him in about a 1/2 hour before I was moved to my room. I kept hearing them talk about sending me to ICU because of my bp and I was terrified. It didn't help that I was blind with out my glasses. I felt utterly vulnerable and defenseless. I don't see what harm it would have done to allow me to be comforted by my husband's company. I sort of thought it was cruel and unnecessary.
Other than those two minor beefs, I was pleased with my stay and would be confident recommending the hospital. |

| Actually, I didn't. It is the only hospital Dr. Nusbaum works out of. But to be honest, I was thrilled it was St. Barnabas. I am very familiar with St. Barnabas after delivering four children (one c-section) and having my gallbladder removed there, I felt very comfortable and confident with the hospital. Also, my gynecologist as well as a very close friend who is also a physician, both have great things to say about St. Barnabas, the level of science and expertise practiced there. |
| Competitors: |
I've only had experience with Overlook, which actually is closer to my home but cannot compare to St. Barnabas. Also, I investigated Morristown Memorial and the Bariatric program there, but I was much more confident and comfortable with Dr. Nusbaum and St. Barnabas. |
| Comments: |
The staff was wonderful, right from the beginning. I was admitted through same day surgery where Audrey brought me to a comfortable private room with a t.v. She gave me the basic information regarding my personal belongings and the schedule for the day. The nurse came in shortly and started my iv, blood pressure and other routine things. I was so nervous, I am not sure if the nurse's name was karen (I think it wasy) but she was WONDERFUl. Very caring and took the time to explain each routine procedure she had to go through to prep me for surgery. Shortly after Dr. Nusbaum stopped by. He is ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL. I was worried, but once I spoke with him, felt so much more at ease. Then Madelaine came to take me off to pre-op where I only stayed for a few mintues. Dr. Nusbaum was right on time. I met with the anesthesiologist, he was great. Then off to the OR. All the nurses were great. Shortly after the anesthesiologist said "sweet dreams, dream of something special" and off to sleep I went. Once in recovery the nurses were very sweet and caring. I was not there for what seemed like very long since I was in and out of it. Once they brought me to my regular room Amanda was my nurse for two days. She was WONDERFUL. So caring and sweet. Then there was Lyn, also GREAT..and Femina, MaryJo and Kim...also GREAT! Kim was a great inspiration to me as well, having been through the same thing, she was wonderful. To all those patients contemplating surgery at St. Barnabas or have surgery dates scheduled, please do not be discouraged by some of the other reviews. Believe me, I read them as well and was also a little put off..but then I realized that you have to take into consideration that it is one person's experience and not all people view things in the same way. Trust me, if you are willing to help yourself to do what is needed to get through the surgery with the best possible results, you will agree, St. Barnabas is a Wonderful place to start your journey. |

The total experience was terrific. I wouldn't change it for anything. I was in a room with other bypass patients and it helped to cheer each other on. I wouldn't change the experience for anything in the world. The staff was awesome and I am touched by the compassion they displayed to all. |

| I used to work in the Saint Barnabas System at Newark Beth Israel and had always heard excellent things about St. Barnabas and therefore had very high expectations, and that was probably not good because once admitted I felt confident, relaxed and assured I was in good hands and would get the best of service. The surgeon was awesome and I would highly recommend him to anyone. He made sure I was comfortable and well taken care of from the admitting stage up to the actual surgery in the O.R. And once I was taken to my room that's where the nightmare began. The nursing staff on the Telemetry Unit I stayed were horrible, nasty attitudes, no real compassion or attention did they give unless I demanded it and it was so uncomfortable that I ended up with high blood pressure and had to stay an extra two days there, origionally I was supposed to go home in two days but stayed for four days due to high blood pressure. The entire weekend I was there no housekeeping services were done except the garbages being changed. No bathroom cleaning, no mopping, dusting, nothing until I complained on Sunday after being there since Friday. I ended up filing complaints on the cleaning issue and two nurses inparticular. I was so disappointed and doubt I would want to go back there unless is was absolutely necessary since Dr. Nusbaum works out of there and I would want to stay under his care or his recommendations for care, should I need reconstructive later down the line. |

I have not been admitted to the hospital that often other than the birth of my two children at Newark Beth Israel and so if I had to compare I would give the Beth much higher ratings based on my experiences. |
| Comments: |
Overall I believe this is a very good hospital, they have excellent doctors and probably excellent care, maybe I was just unfortunate during my stay and one of few who may have had similiar experience, I mean my room mate even share discomfort and was displeased with the service on that unit and perhaps if I were on another unit with another group of staff it would have been more pleasurable. I still have high expectations and a lot of respect for St. Barnabas and if I ever had to be admitted there again I would hope they would change my mind about that last experience. Again it was only that Telemetry Unit that I had the bad experience an unfortunatley that was where I had to recover, but admitting staff were excellent, the O.R. staff were excellent and just about everyone else that I came in contact with. But once I made my concerns known on Telemetry then they did make an effort to do better. |

The room I was in was a quad on the Telemetry unit, so I had a man in there, I hated that allot! It's wrong to have the same sex in the room. The guy ended up being critical (different type of surgery) so I was up all night. My room mate had 50 visitors all day 2nd day it was absurd, so lack of sleep and privacy were the major complaints. Some of the nurses were awesome and some were ok. |

I have only good things to say about this hospital. I was on the 4th floor, they were very clean. All 3 of my nurses couldn't have been nicer or more understanding. My one nurse is having a bypass so she was excellent. I give this hospital a 10 out of 10. |

This Hospital was the most horrible h-ll to ever have been in. It was dirty, disgusting, the nurses did not help. Gave me wrong drinks when they did come. Did not help me or other patients in the gross room. Dispicable. I am writing to the health department. |

Rarely saw a nurse. Never saw anyone from housekeeping. Basic requests took hours to get. Such as a clean sheet. |

My roommate's cardiac lead came off and the alarm sounded at 3am. I immediately pushed the "nurse call" button and waited twelve minutes for somebody to arrive. Floor was filthy. Never saw anyone from housekeeping. Nurses were very nice when I saw one every 3 or 4 hours. At no time did anyone ever ask me, "How are you feeling?" |

It is truly one of the best in the country. I was surprised that the anestiologist even called me the night before my surgery to see if I had any questions. Amazing. |
| Comments: |
It was a very good hospital experience. Everyone takes the time to answer your questions. The nurses (Joanne,Tawanda,Fleta,Norma, Pat B, Gwen) were the BEST on the 4700 wing. All very caring and encouraging..willing to take the time with their patients.
One word of advice to all though..make sure to check that you have all your prescriptions when discharged..my discharge nurse (who does not appear in the list above) was very abrupt and forget my prescriptions! It was a hassle to get Prevacid and Roxicet once I got home without the prescriptions. Lots of phone calls. UGH
But overall it was a GREAT experience. |

| It's part of the St. Barnabas Health Care System through which I was employed at the time and had my insurance through. It would cover at 100% because it was "in-network" and because I was an employee of the system, I did not have to pay for television and phone. |

SBMC is a good facility. The staff is,... well, let's face it - it's Jersey, they could ALL use some courtesy lessons. My main problems were with the nursing staff. |
| Comments: |
There was a bed shortage that forced me to stay in the Telemetry Unit for my entire stay. The room I shared had three other patients in it. Everyday of my recovery I was visited and told that I would be moved to a semi-private room later that day.... I never was.
Staff in this unit were not experienced to deal with a patient with MY kind of recovery - and their lack of patient care knowledge was highly evident and detrimental to my experience. In this type of unit the average patient was very old and usually asleep all day and night long. Telemetry patients have very little to no communication with staff, don't require anything more than a check two or three times a day, and hardly ever, if ever, get up to move around. Suddenly there I was, needing to be unhooked for frequent trips to the bathroom, support for hallway walking, and constant monitoring of post-surgical pain medication and the nursing staff almost didn't know what to do with me.
All except for Marie (she was fabulous and caring and stuck up for me), the rest of my nurses and the staff in that unit could be handed their walking papers if it based on my review. And I'm NOT exaggerating - they made my stay HORRID!
The first night (day of surgery, high level of discomfort/pain) I could feel that something was wrong with my catheter. I rang for the nurse twice, telling her both times that something was wrong. She insisted everything was fine and I should just stop trying to "hold it". You all know what's coming up next. Sure enough, my catheter had come out and now I had to endure rolling over onto my sides and shakingly holding myself up in place while they cleaned up the bed and me. How embarrasing and infuriating and excrutiatingly painful to have to endure! After I tried to tell them TWICE!!
Then,... they refused to put the catheter back in. Which meant that every time that I had to use the bathroom (which is quite alot when they are pumping liquids into you all day long and forcing you to sip water every few minutes) I'd have to be unhooked from my monitor and my leg compressors and helped across the room to the bathroom (I was the furthest patient from the bathroom and the ONLY patient in the room using it). This annoyed my nurses, and subsequently they acted annoyed towards me! Like I was a burden and interruption to their normal routine.
The first time I needed help up to cross the room to the bathroom, the nurse (a different one than 'the catheter nurse') told me to lean on my IV pole for support. She then turned away from me and proceeded to drag the pole across the floor behind her as she quickly tried to head to the bathroom. You aren't supposed to even get out of bed for a couple of days and here she was racing me along. (Remember, this is all in the first NIGHT!) I had to ask her 3 times to not drag me as I hobbled after my pole. Finally I had to yank my IV pole back towards me when it became apparent she either couldn't hear me or was ignoring me.
And then there was Charmaine. This nurse talked down to me like I was a five year old. She was soooo patronizing. The second night of my stay was the worst as far as number of times I had to get up to go to the bathroom, and Charmaine was getting more and more peeved every time. Around the fourth trip, my Morphine drip needed changing. Instead of getting me back to my bed and hooked back up to recover from the event, she made me stand in the middle of the room while she went to find a new vial of Morphine. So I'm standing there all by myself, in a darkened room, with my butt hanging open to the hallway, shaking in pain. She comes back, opens the unit, pulls out the old vial, unscrews the new vial and I hear "Crack,... clinkle, clinkle, clinkle". Charmaine only looks at the vial for a second before she puts the tube into my Morphine Unit and closes it up. I'm thinking, "Well, it must be alright or she wouldn't have put it in." Then she says, "Okay, let's go." I refuse to move anywhere until she cleans up the broken glass laying on the ground in my walking path (I only had thin socks on). She gets a towel and wipes the broken shards to the side.
The next morning I couldn't have been in more pain - it took until late morning / early afternoon to discover that the vial she put in my Morphine drip was NOT okay to use - it's wasn't just the lid to the vial that cracked and fell to the floor, the entire top of the tube was broken and spitting out my pain medication - no Morphine was getting to me for over 7 hours. I wonder now if she didn't do it on purpose because I was having to get up so often that night.
Marie (my angel nurse) and I discovered the Morphine dripping down the side of the unit the next day. She IMMEDIATELY took out the broken tube, contacted my doctor, reported the incident, wrote up Charmaine, and came around to check on me every hour after that.
I loved Marie. Simply loved her.
I actually needed to be taken off the Morphine and switched to a different drug anyway, Roxicet. When Marie brought it around she gave me a large dose of it since I'd been without any pain medicine for hours and was in considerable discomfort. Within half an hour I felt the best I had up to that point. Plus, it made me a little sleepy which was good since I hadn't had any sleep hardly at all the night before with all the bathroom trips.
Charmaine was back on for the very next night shift and she took my pain medication back down to the lowest dose - but it turns out that that was enough to ease my discomfort and keep me sleepy. That night I only had to get up twice. The only thing keeping me away that night was the heat and the smell from the expulsions of the invalid geriatric in the bed beside me - they weren't keeping her too well cleaned in my opinion. As it turned out,... that old lady died sometime early that morning and the death wasn't discovered until after 7 or 8.
((It makes you wonder why her heart monitor alarm didn't go off. Everyone on that unit, including me (though my doctor kept insisting they remove them from me - I didn't need it), was hooked up to heart monitoring equipment.))
Also, communication amoungst hospital transport staff was very very poor. As I was waiting for my wheelchair to come get me for my discharge, a member from the patient transport staff mistaken came waltzing into my bed curtain area to remove the dead woman's body down to the Morgue. Needless to say, the look on his face was quite amusing when he saw a live person sitting up in the chair waiting for him. He stared at me for a good long moment, turned and fled without comment. I thought he should have excused himself for the mistake; at least apologized for entering without announcing he was coming into a patient care area (yes, I know he wasn't expecting anyone to be there who would have been in any condition to have minded, but once he realized the error, that the person there was alive, he should have at least said SOMETHING to me - not have just turned and quickly left).
When my wheelchair did arrive, it was not large enough to accommodate me (even though when Marie phoned, I distinctly heard her request that large size wheelchair). When the girl showed up, I tried telling her that I wouldn't be able to fit in the one she brought. She insisted that I try anyway (lazy, didn't want to go find another). So I had to get up and painfully try to lower myself into the chair. Of course, I didn't fit. When she finally DID come back, after what seemed like a half hour, the wheelchair was only SLIGHTLY wider than the last one. I fit, but was uncomfortably pinched and the ride was most painful and bumpy.
I was happy to leave. |

I think St. Barnabas is the best hospital in the area. I felt confident that I would receive good care there. I would not even attempt to compare it with any other hospital in the area. St Barnabas would far surpass them in every category. |

The hospital was very clean. The nursing staff was very professional and attentive. I never was lacking anything I needed or requested. The respiratory department was excellent. They made sure I did my exercises regularly, which I feel is a very important part of your recovery. The dietary staff was so pleasant and accomodating. Although the diet I was on was so limited they did everything they could to make me happy, even down to getting my my favorite flavor jello. St.Barnabas is very well equipped and I knew that whatever situations might arise that I was in the best hospital to handle it. I cannot say enough about St.Barnabas. |
