My third office visit with Dr. Gandsas, (which was my pre-opt appt) was a WINNER! He seemed a lot more relaxed this time and we had a nice chat. I think he is a bit misunderstood. I agree that at times he seems a bit quiet and standoffish, but the most important thing to keep in mind is his abilities as a surgeon. I feel like he was very willing to answer all my questions and I even got him to laugh a bit this time! I want to also say that his staff is WONDERFUL! Every person I've dealt with at his office has been helpful and friendly. He has an awesome on-staff nutritionist, Nancy, who is always available to answer nutritional questions and concerns. So far, I would recommend Dr. Gandsas to my friends and family for sure. Posted on 06/18/2009 |

My first impression of Dr. Gandsas was that he was really quiet and seemed to have alot of knowledge about all the types of surgery. My previous surgeon wanted to do the Gastric bypass on me but he pointed out that with me already extremely anemic the bypass could make things alot worse for me with the malabsorbtion and recommended the sleeve. The office staff is very nice. They stay really busy and sometimes can be a little short, but overall very friendly and eager to help you get on your way. I haven't actually had surgery yet, so bedside manner I can't really rate, so far the treatment in the office is great and overall out of 10, I rate him and his staff at a 9. Will update more following surgery. Posted on 06/11/2009 |

i think he is a kewl guy. he seems to be very supportive and actually help me decide which surgery was best for me. At Sinai, they recommend a nutrition class for a year. This should definitely keep me on point. So far so good... Posted on 12/29/2008 |

My first impression of Dr, Gandsas was that he is a brillant surgeon and is very maticulous in his planning and procedures. The staff in the office; half of which have had some form of WLS, are excellent in information and encouragement. Posted on 12/03/2008 |

Initial impression or Dr. Gandsas was "he's a busy guy". That didn't bother me however, because I was there for information, didn't require all the touchy feel good stuff. He sounded very knowledgeable and that alone made me feel comfortable.
I also like the fact that Dr. Gandsas appears to be a technological trendsetter within the medical field, with his robot and all. Though I didn't see him often, while I was in the hospital I noticed that all the medical staff was very AWARE of what Dr. Gandsas wants for his patients and they almost cared for me like a china doll.
That tells me that he and Dr. Li sets high standards of care, even higher than the hospital -Sinai (which was great!)
Overall, Dr. Gandsas is excellent! Posted on 10/30/2008 |

I was referred to Dr. Gandsas by my co-worker, who had WLS( weight loss surgery) about two years prior. She stated that she felt he was very personable and that his credentials were good, so she felt that he was worth a shot, and I followed her lead. My first impression of Dr. Gandsas was that he seemed to care about his patients. In order to get an appointment with his office you must first attend a WLS seminar; during the seminar you meet the surgeons and also get a chance to hear first person accounts from people who have already experienced the surgery. I was very nervous and was immediately put at ease by his staff and him. Upon finally getting my appointment (he is very busy and it took me about 2 months before I could get an appointment) I was informed that I had to undergo... [Click here for more] a 6 month waiting period for insurance purposes. I had to go to see Dr. Gandsas once a month for 6 months and have my weight monitored before I could get my insurance to approve the surgery. It was during this time that I really got to know the staff and the doctor. I did not like the excessive wait time, which would range from 30 minutes up to 75 minutes for what essentially was a weigh in. I found his staff to be very friendly and helpful and very compassionate, but felt like Dr. Gandsas treated me like a product on an assembly line. Although he was very friendly he did not have the time to really make you feel comfortable, I always felt as if I was bothering him. He never really looked up from his computer during our visits and I just didnt feel like I was developing a relationship with the man that in 6 months would have my life in his hands. He was very clear and methodical in making sure that he listed all the risks, pros, cons, etc. and his office gave you all the key information that you would need to have success before and after the procedure. Although I felt that Dr. Gandsas could be a little more sensitive during my visits, he was more than competent and I have no complaints about the procedure or the care I received during and after my surgery.

Dr. Gandsas is very informative and to the point. He performed my procedure well. I haven't had any problems/complications. He is very easy to speak to and thoroughly answers all questions. The office staff are great. The after program is great. He thoroughly went over all risks involved as well as the benefits of surgery. Overall I give Dr. Alex Gandsas a 10. I would say he excells in his surgical competence. He is a busy doctor, but great at what he does. Posted on 09/11/2008 |

These are my opinions and my opinions only. My first impression of Dr. Gandsas was his youthful appearance. I thought how much experience could this man have?? I had quite a bit to learn. My cardiologist recommended him because his secretary underwent the gastric bypass operation and lost over 100 lbs. He sung Dr. Gandsas' praises and pushed and pushed me to do it too. He pushed me for about two years! Over about 4 months and only twice meeting with Dr. Gandsas my impression only slightly changed. I still thought he looked too young but he was confident; very confident in his ability and likable in his personality to me. His visits in the hospital were pretty quick and factual so his bedside manner didn't leave me with any warm fuzzy but again he appeared confident. I am glad he was... [Click here for more] because I wasn't.
The office staff was pretty nice. There were a few that could have been a little nicer and not so quick to speak. In other words their listening abilities might need a little work. Again this is my experience only. The ones that were nice though were not just nice but wonderful! They listened, they offerd help, they made me feel comfortable. I clung to them. Most of the team had undergone some type of weightloss surgery.
I guess I least liked the way he made me feel like part of a production line product. That might sound harsh but that is how I felt. I didn't feel like an individual with feelings but a product amongst a million other products that needed to be shoved through the process. Yep that is how I felt. It could have been so much worse I am sure.
I guess future patients should know as much as possible about him. They should research him completely and be ok with a non feeling type approach. He is quick, confident, knowledgable, and I believe thorough.
Aftercare is a given. They want you back at one month, three months, six months, nice months and one year to talk about your blood work at each interval. They check every vitamin your body uses. This is good stuff here.
His team addressed the risks of surgery and they did it by addressing questions in the seminars and in the nutrition classes that were required components of the surgery. He went over it with me very briefly right at the pre op appt two days prior to my surgery. He wrote down his statistics on a piece of paper and said there ya go. It was factual but again I got a kinda of cold feeling from it.
I rate him pretty high based on his confidence level. His surgical competence, in my humble opinion, is probably better than his bedside manner. I am very happy with the surgery overall and I took responsibility for the risks associated with it based on the research I had done prior to the surgery itself. I knew I couldn't hold him responsible if something went wrong. Following all of the rules was priceless to me. My life, afterall, was on the line.

My first impression of Dr. Gandsas was okay. He was kind of quiet. We did find a common topic and things lightened up. He seems to have a good sense of humor. It doesn't hurt that he's easy on the eyes. The scheduling staff stinks but the girls in the office are great. There's a girl that weighs me and she has had a gastric bypass, so she knows what you're going through. She's very nice also. I like their structure of having to see a nutritionist. I will be scheduling my surgury for sometime in late February or early March. Posted on 01/13/2008 |
