How Selected: I work for the University of Mn Physicians so it made sense for me to utilitze the facility.
Competitors: I think that this was a better hospital than the one my husband was in a few years ago.
Comments: Quiet, everyone kinda left me alone unless they had to take vitals. I had control over my own pain pump so I did not have to call them. They did respond quickly when they were called. The only thing that I did not like is the fact that the rooms were not singles. So everytime someone was in my roommate could hear what my problems were. Otherwise I had no issues with the hopsital.

Competitors: It seems very good! Better than Fairview Riverside. HOWEVER, it is about time that they upgraded the entire wing for bariatric surgery patients. The beds were acceptable, but I have heard of newer beds and accessories that really make a patients hospital visit much easier.
Comments: The staff was fantastic! Never a surly or inattentive nurse, aide or doctor. Very well trained in what to expect from bariatric patients. HOWEVER... ALWAYS check the food you are being given and COMPLAIN when it is the wrong stuff! This seems to be the weak link in all modern hospital systems!

How Selected: i have nothing but praise for the well-oiled nursing team of unit 7-b. every member from RN to AIDE to meal delivery person to housekeeper treated me with courtesy and effieciency. even though i rarely saw the same person twice in my 6 day stay, each was totally privvy to my prognosis and history. regarding the over-sized equipment, etc., all seemed fine. i spent some time with the physical therapy people and they were very focussed on my homecare, offering the use of much appartus.

Comments: I felt it was noisy and not at all restful. I had a roommate I felt bad for. She had a more extensive surgry than mine, and he monitor things beeped all night long and sometimes it seemed to take forever for a nurse to come.It was a holiday so perhaps they were a bit understaffed. I was suprised and dismayed that my surgeon sent a fellow in to see me prior to surgery, and never came to see me.

How Selected: I was referred to my Doctor by a friend and that is where this Doctor practices.
Competitors: I thought the nurses where much more attentive to ME than other hospitals I've been in (Regions and Abbott).
Comments: I really felt the nurses and other staff cared about me. There always someone checking in on me. I also me with a Physical and Occupational Therapist. I was on the 6th floor because 7 was under construction. The GB patients are usually on 7 so I think if I were up there I would have seen more people in my shoes. There were all types of people on my floor. That was ok though. I ended up with my own room! The halls were carpeted and that really helped with the noise level.

Comments: I had to go to the cardiac floor for 3 days after my surgery-they were the most awful nurses I have ever had. They never came when you pushed the call button, they ignored your requests for hours! When they finally moved me to the surgery floor, or bariatric floor, it was 100% turnaround. The bariatric floor was AWESOME, and the nurses were WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!

Comments: I think that the experience I had with one nurse lowered some of my review points. Pain control was great all in all - but one nurses inattentiveness gave me a bad experience. The rest of the nursing staff is excellent and very attentive to my needs. If you encounter anyone that is abusive to you in any hospital setting, please, please do not let it continue. Say something immediately to another nurse or staff person so that you can get the help you need. My surgery team were also top notch and I trusted them with my life and would do it again!

How Selected: This is the hospital that my surgeon uses. So I went where he went!
Competitors: One thing Inoticed right away is the parking. At North Memorial if you are there for surgery, everyone with you gets free parking. Not so at Fairview, there it was just a reduced rate.
Comments: The hospital was great. Nursing staff was good & accomidating except for one instance. I pushed the nurse button 4 times within a half hour & they responded that someone would be there in a moment & no one came. It took a half hour for someone to come & take care of my pain. At that point I was crying. When you are in pain, a half hour can seem like a lifetime! They did well with helping me from bed to bathroom & for my walks. Food was good becuase I had none for days before! So I enjoyed every bit they gave me. I could not eat it all, but it was yummy! It was a little noisy, but my room was just outside the nurses station. I just asked that they close the door & that was much better. It was a good hospital & I recommend it for anyone!

Comments: I was very apprehensive about going to a teaching hospital as I knew I would be practiced on by "rookies" but I have to say my overall experience was great. Even though they had many patients needing care I never felt like just a number. The system is like a well oiled machine and very organized. When I arrived I was given an extra large gown but after surgery the I.V. gowns were too small and choked me if I did not leave them mostly unbuttoned. The nursing staff was excellent and since I am a nurse I would know. They were very busy but always took time to be caring and helpful. One thing I was surprised about though was that they did not check my I.V. site unless I complained about it and it infiltrated twice. I also had a family member there pretty often so they helped me with personal care. The only major complaint I had was the noise level..it is terrible. All night long they bang carts up and down the hallways and even wash the floors with power equipment every night..they really need to carpet the halls. I also could clearly hear the docs discussing my case outside of my room. But again overall the care was excellent, the nurses terrific and I feel very lucky that I was in this hospital.

Comments: I was on a floor where mostly gastric bypass patients were. The nursing staff was excellent. I found it really neat that a nurses assistant who had this surgery a couple of years ago was working with the bariatric patients. He was able to give encouragement that I really needed at the time. All of the nursing staff understood my concerns and were excellent at taking what I said and getting me what I needed.

Competitors: As good in most categories, better in others. I feel they treat morbidly obese people with much greater respect than some of the other hospitals in the Twin Cities.

Comments: I felt the nursing staff was overwhelmed. I know there is a nursing crisis in the US, but there are times when I was very distressed and I couldn't seem to get a satisfactory response from a nurse. I did have a great view of the Mississippi River from my bed, though...very relaxing.

Competitors: About the same as far as care. This is only the second time I've had to say overnight at a hospital.
Comments: It was very busy and noisy at all hours. Lots of people traffic. I was lucky in that I had a private room, however, I was not allowed to shut the door. There were staff constanstly outside of my door chatting. The care was very good. It is a teaching hospital so I do understand all the people. I didn't get to see my regular surgeon, however, his team was in and out throught each day and very attentive to my needs. Overall, it was not a bad experience. Just not restful.

Competitors: Although I thought I received very good care, my family did not feel they were kept updated on my status as much as they would have liked or as well as another local hospital.
Comments: The hospital is an older hospital, but I though the rooms were adequate and the care I received from my nurses and most of the nurses aides was very good. I did not see much of the doctors - I didn't need to, but they were there at least once a day.

How Selected: U of M Fairview is the hospital Dr. Buchwald performs his operations.
Competitors: In general I don't like any hospital in the twin Cities EXPECIALLY HCMC! But Fairview U of M I give an A+!
Comments: Everyone was extremely nice and for once I didn't feel they were saying to themselves "How does someone let themselves get so fat" they might of thought it but I NEVER felt the "vibes" from ANYONE on the hospital staff or otherwise. Only problem I had was the bed was EXTREMELY uncomfortable and made for a small person and being that I am hyperactive I wanted to get up and move when I woke up from surgery and I wanted to do it on my own and I drove some of the nurses nuts because I would tangle myself up in all my tubes trying to get out of bed on my own and they would come in my room and find me 1/2 in bed and 1/2 out of bed! But after the pain medication wore off from surgery the next day they let me move around more freely on my own. Only minus I would give the hospital is they push pain medication on patients WAY 2 MUCH! I didn't want it and they "felt" I needed it. One nurse kept trying to give me pain medication because I was uncomfortable. I was uncomfortable because the bed was hard as a rock not because I was in pain that needed medication. She just couldn't understand that and I gave up trying to explain why I didn't want any pain medication. My pain was from coughing and the cut. The drugs wasen't going 2 stop the pain from my coughing and natuarally my stomach would be sore from being cut open but it dosen't require being drugged up for 4-5 days.

Other than that the hosptial staff was some of the BEST Doctors and Nurses I ever recieved care from. One nurse even went out of her way to try and find me a "comfortable chair" to sit in so I wouldn't have 2 sit in that hard bed all day. I was so touched I didn't have the heart to tell her the chair was more uncomfortable than the bed! (smile but true). But at least with the chair my back didn't hurt as much so I spent a lot of my hospital stay in that chair.

Competitors: I would say poor to average. I would of liked to see with the amount of bariatric surgeries that if you share rooms you share with another bariatric patient versus other type of surgical.
Comments: I hated sharing rooms with someone who was not a bariatric patient. It is horrible to not have eaten for a week and then smell someone else's lunch come in. Also, it is hard for people that aren't having that type of surgery to be sensitive to issues that you might face in recovery

How Selected: I selected the hospital because it was where the surgeon I selected was associated with.
Competitors: I felt it was better than many hospitals.
Comments: I didn't have a problem with the hospital itself, but had a horrible experience with many of the nurses I had. I had never been in the hospital before and my biggest fear was having a 'mean' nurse and I had a very horrible nurse on one shift and my main day nurse was very unfriendly and I really like the warm fuzzy type of nurse and only had one nurse that fit that description the entire time I was there and I loved her. I still get upset when I think about my hospital stay, it was not pleasant.

How Selected: No choice, this is where Dr.Ikramuudin practices
Competitors: The nursing care was excellent. I was on 7B and their speciality is bariactic surgery. Weighing 260 pounds I was definately the peanut on the unit. The nurses changed everyday but their internal float pool was staffed with high tech nurses. I had to return to surgery 15 hours after my first for internal bleeding. I develope a huge fluid overload, ( weight up 22 pounds from pre op when a nurse finaly decided to weigh me) I must say however, the resisdents in charge of my care had very poor bedside manner. I am a nurse and yet no one listened to me until I decided I needed to take total control and not get out of there. the surgeon is wonderful but the resisdents who are responsible for post op care are unskilled, poor communicators and very uncaring. I can't wait to get back to my internist ( this was an out of network referral ) and start to really get well.
Comments: I would never, never return under the current set up of unskilled and mostly unsupervised resisdents handling my care.

But there was a nurse named Jim who was a GODSEND to me. He was truly an angel and he knew his stuff. Competitors: Large, busy
Comments: As in any hospital setting the quality of care varies per individual I found Fairview needs to update their employees more to keep consistancy in the treatment of this type of surgery. There were some nurses/aides that should wear halo's and then there were some that should not be in the profession they are in.
