Competitors: The hospital was average in comparison to even smaller, community hospitals I have stayed at.
Comments: One of the RNs Alyssa was OUTSTANDING !! Other staff that were above average IMHO were JoAnn, RN, Cristal, RN, Kelly, RN, Jessica, RN, and Patrick & John, aides. Other staff were not very attentive. My DH was allowed to stay with me the entire time, and he is the one that got me up and walking, and helped me to the restroom, wheeled my IV pole when escort took me to my doppler test, etc. Why weren't the staff doing these things? Maybe they were giving me privacy, maybe they were assuming I could do these things, maybe I should have used my call button more? Also, the RN in the RR was extremely rude and no one bothered to explaing to my family that I would NOT be returning to the floor in 1 hr as that surgeon had thought. My BP was elevated and I ended up in the RR for 5 hrs with my family worried, concerned, puzzled, etc. The anesthesiologist and CRNA were TERRIFIC also. Another negative was the resident who decided to pop in my first night and ask if I was drinking as I should and why was my IV going at 200 ml/hr. She called her higher up and came back to say "oh, that's correct for THIS type of surgery." Needless to say I did NOT see her again. Apparently she was not part of the team (i.e. the 3 reidents I did see from then on). Shouldn't people coming into your room be familiar with your surgery and its requirements? Overall, the afternoon and night staff seemed more attentive. I am in the medical profession and cannot imagine treating people as rudely as some of the staff at AGH did. Also, the noise level was terrible.

Comments: In recovery I was taken care of by JOE. Excellent care. If he would not have placed a band on me and set up my pain meds, I may still be without them!!! Once I was on the 6th floor my quality of care changed drasticly. Some of the nurses aids were rude and unresponsive to my needs. No one explained the system of phoning your nurse or aid. Numbers on a board who new!! My roommate would call for pain meds, maybe get them after 4 calls and an hour. They were due when she called. I realize I had my surgery New Years Eve but all staff know it is a 24/7 operation and the standard of care should not fall.

How Selected: My HMO selected the doctor and hospitail for me.
Competitors: It's about the same as any hospitail I had to stay in.
Comments: I did have a few problems with my stay some of the aids where great and nurses too but I also induced a few bad nurses and aids they left an elderly lady on her bed pan for over an hour and twice they left her lay in feces and let her saline drip beep for an hour and a half. she was in car wreck in DEC 06 both legs crushed and had metal plates the right leg was infected and needed out and they expected her to go to the bathroom just jump and run across the room how rude i called and summed the nurses 4 times for her and they took attitude with me once I yelled at two of them. That is not right leaving someone lay in a nasty smelly mess for over 2 hours. Boooo!!! on the aids and nurses who just don't care it is their JOB to help the sick and elderly that is why they get paid and work in a hospital to help others not be mean and let them lay in gross stuff.I had an allergic reaction to something and my lip swelled the side of my tongue and the left size of the roof of my mouth I called the nurse to look at it and all she said was I gave you a popsicle and never came to see I was so glad to get home and take Benadryl I nursed myself back to health I was beat red as well anyone could see I had a bad reaction to something My doc finally came in and let me have a shot of Benadryl and released me for home. The nurse said I refused my saline drip which was a lie My doc said I could have a shower and get my needle changed since it was half out and blood building up around it All I wanted was the shower first without something in my hand since I had to hold the ball that collected the seeping drainage yucky stuff. That nurse was a bad one she was the night time nurse before the day I left I wish the hospital gave you names of everyone that was on clock and staff that worked with you I would so report the few that where bad. I see it is this floor 6C that is bad at this hospitail by the rest of the reviews perhaps this hospital should look into their emplyee's closer. I will not return back for surgery there but to see my Doctor I will go and only for that reason.

Comments: I was not on the usual bairatric surgery floor because there was not a bed available. I was on the coronary care floor. My care was excellent and the staff was very good. I had a private room. I felt that the hospital was very clean and my bed was changed daily. Overall I had a great experience.

How Selected: It was the hospital my surgeon uses, his office is in it.
Competitors: I've never been in a hospital as a patient before.
Comments: The day shift nurses were completely none-existant. The night shift was impeccable. During the day, I had hit the call button 3 times, after each time someone radioing in saying someone was on their way, as did my roommate for me also. No one came. I was worried because my drainage tube was leaking all over me, I even yelled and grabbed someone from the hallway, they said they would get someone. No one came, in like, 3 hours! One of the Dr.'s that was checking in came in and ended up cleaning it himself, and a nurse finally came a 1/2 hour after. Just a warning about the day shift. I didn't mind not seeing them until I really needed them.

Comments: This was my first experience at AGH. It was not a good one. It is supposed to be one of the top hospitals in the country. I don't agree with that. They may have the technology, but the nurses have the attitude that they could care less and they did not use infection precautions and I ended up with a staph infection/abscess in my incision that required a second surgery. I thought the hospital was very dirty. I have been in smaller community hospitals and they are very clean compared to AGH. I would not go there again.

Comments: I had some problems after surgery and had to end up in ICU THE DOCTORS AND ESP the anesthialogoist WERE WONDERFUL they took good care of me and checked on me alot. esp when I was in ICU the NURSES UP THERE WERE AMAZING...Carrie and ALANA!!! when I was moved down to 6c it's like a whole new place the only nurses that even cared were a nurses assistant Cheryl and Erin(who was awesome) and I htought sometimes Linda cared. They switch off nurses way too much and NO one ever tells you who your new nurse is. I did not like being down in 6c! The cuffs they put on your legs...I was supposed to have them on to prevent pulminory embalisms(blood Cots) and the male nurse i think his name was anthony. tried to fix them and he said he would com eback in because it beeps when it isn't working so he came back in AGAIn and just "tried fixing them" and they were never fixed I had to wait and wait and finlly called the nurses button(where they act like it's a big deal and a burdon when you do press it!!!!) and Cheryl came in and replaced it for me!! good thing she was there...This guy WALKEd off his shift without checking to see if it was ok!! YEA NOT A GOOD NURSE. If the doctors would move to a diff place with more caring nurses unlike most on floor 6c i'm sure that they would have more people going there. I also asked for Jello and told the one girl whenever you have time and she came back an hour later and was like here's you jello and basically threw it at me!!! UGH! so many bad things to say abou the nurses and aides.

How Selected: Surgeon and I had heard it was good.
Competitors: It was a horrible experience.
Comments: No one ever came into the room, which could be a good thing. They insisted I needed pain meds which I didn't want, which caused a bad reaction. Surgery on Wednesday and my IV leaked and my hand swelled up and I couldn't get anyone in the room for a couple of hours and then I had to lay in bed all day wet because they were too busy to get me dry clothes or sheets. The following day my drain leaked and I had to spend another day laying in wet clothes because I could not get anyone to come to the room and when they did they would say they would be right back and then the next shift would put me through the same thing. I would not have belived this if it had not have happened to me. By the way when they took me for the swallow test they had trouble finding the little cups because some staff member was having a party that night and they thought they were just the right size for jello shots, guess thats why costs are so high!

Comments: There were a handful of nurses aides and nurses who made my experience a pleasant one. I do not have any complaints about the workers themselves, I do feel the hospital was understaffed on the evening and night shifts. The workers on those shifts kicked it up a notch to get done what needed to be done. Most of the time I had my own room and was left alone for the most part by the staff, unless I had called them for something or they needed to give me a med or check my vitals.

Comments: I had two wonderful nurses the first two days I was there. The night nurse that I had even gave me a sponge bath. I felt so much better. The day nurse left me alone most of the day which was great so I could get some sleep since they keep you up all night. The only down side was that they wouldn't let my husband stay with me. I really wanted him too, and so did he, but it was okay in the end. I just was very scared and upset, and wanted him there with me. I recommend getting it cleared to have someone stay with you long before your surgery date.

I was to had the SCD pumps put on my legs after surgery, They put them on but they were not working right, so they just didn't use them. I felt that the care I got was not good at all. The only saving grace was that my doctor was one of the nicest people.
