How Selected: The hospital I work at doesn't do laparascopic bypass- yet- and the only place that I could go to would be either Crestwood or AThens. Since Crestwood is the enemy hospital, I would not be covered there but 80%. Athens was covered 100% because it's in the network and Huntsville Hospital doesn't provide the service
Competitors: Compared to Huntsville Hospital, Athens seemed a little rinky dink. I mean, with the exception of not doing this surgery laparascopically, HH is the best hospital in North Alabama. I was really worried about not being in my home hospital, like I wasn't as safe because of it. In the end, though, Athens was very nice. It was clean and well decorated, and to my shame, almost better than HH. I was Taken aback. It wasn't just a rinky dink hospital, although I would still take my emergencies to HH.
Comments: Everyone was really nice, except for the tech. She wasn't mean, she was just not personable. Unfortunately, she was the first person I met in my room, and I thought she was my nurse because she never said who she was. That didn't set a good tone, because I was already so scared, and worried to trust my life to this small hospital. The other complaint was having a student nurse the morning after. I know they must learn to, but she set me up to take a bath all by myself- which I feel was a little risky after such a surgery. I did fine though. On the other hand, the nursing director came in and introduced herself, visiting me twice. That was impressive. We don't to that at HH, and it made me feel important. She asked if understood everything. It was nice. All of my nurses were nice too.

Comments: Please research and know your do's & don't before and after surgery, because everyone you encounter are not familiar with this type of surgery and it may be left up to you to detremine what is right or wrong.

How Selected: It is in the town I live in, and have had been a patient there before, and the only other hospital my Doctor used, was not a Cigna PPO provider
Competitors: There are no other local hospitals in Athens, there are hospitals in surrounding towns
Comments: It has taken me a long time to fill this section out, but in my heart I need to advise, until the hospital has more knowledge of Gastro By Pass surgery, please do not go to this hospital, I have an amazing story to tell, from being served surgared food 3 times, to being told to take an aspirin after surgery, (I refused) Having IV'S ripped out by carless transport people on my way to xray, to being told, to use a bedpan, because there was not enough people to help me to the bathroom ( I weighed 246 at date of operation, so am considered a light weight.) Please email me at Jeri@pclnet.net if I can answer any questions,If you choose to use this Hospital, be sure you stay on your toes and be very knowledgable of what is needed for your OWN Health
