How Selected: Got stuck with it, surgeons office is in the building.
Competitors: It'll work in an emergency, but any planned care I would plan for elsewhere.
Comments: The hospital itself is very well kept. It's nursing staff unfortunately was very unacceptable. Now that doesn't mean EVERY nurse there is horrible, but my experience was 2 out of the 5 I had over the 3 days I was there were very useless, unacceptably unprofessional individuals. I would never be a patient there under free will again.

How Selected: This is the hospital my surgeon uses for Bariatric surgery.
Competitors: This hospital is excellent.
Comments: I entered Avera McKennan weighing 1072 lbs, and they seemed to be prepared for every eventuality. The thing that concerns me about this and other hospitals is that they initially refused to admit me for "liability issues." Even Supermorbidly Obese patients deserve to have medical care, and hospitals who are going to have a bariatric unit should admit every patient that desperately needs care. Dr. Harris's office negotiated on ky behalf and got me in, but that shouldn't have been necessary.

How Selected: This is the hospital that I was transfered to from Madison Hospital.
Competitors: McKennan was wonderful I think if I hadnt been there and had the Dr's that I had to deal with my complications, I wouldnt be here today.
Comments: I was there for a long time! In the ICU I dont remember much, then I was moved to another room that was very noisy because it was right next to the nurses station and had only curtains for walls! I was eventually moved to a room with real walls and a door and that was much better for rest. Most of the nurses were excellent!

How Selected: My surgeons primary hospital.
Competitors: Much better than the other hospital here. You aren't treated like a number!
Comments: Overall the hospital was excellent. The only problem I had was with one specific nurse, any time I had to use my call light she would ask over the room's intercom (which was across the room) what I needed instead of coming to my room.

How Selected: First of all, this is the hospital that my surgeon, Dr. Harris offices out of. Secondly, I gave birth to my son, via C-Section back in Oct. 2002, and I was well taken care of then as well. I LOVE this hospital and its staff....WOW!!!!
Competitors: Compared to my local hospitals here in SW Minnesota, it just seems like the staff at Avera McKennan are much better prepared for any major emergency situations. There aren't even specialist available in my nearby surrounding areas.
Comments: Avera McKennan is by far THE VERY BEST hospital I am aware of to date! I give my complete and utter trust with my life to them. They ALL, for the most part, seem to actually CARE about patients........What else can one ask for? *smiles*

How Selected: It is the hosp my surgeon uses.
Competitors: I would say Avera McKennan is superior to most hospitals in the area.
Comments: There were several times that I thought I was doing things that I shouldn't have to do because there weren't any nurses around ie plugging my IV pump back into the outlet and some hygiene things that I probably should have had someone there observing me to make sure I was ok. I think that hospitals are so short staffed in general, that I got the best care that they could provide under the circumstances. Everyone there was very caring and supportive. Since it is a catholic hosp, I appreciated the christian centered atmosphere too.

How Selected: THIS IS WHERE MY SURGEON DOES HIS SURGERIES.
Comments: THE NURSES WHERE ALL PRETTY NICE. BUT, I NEVER SAW THEM. THEY ARE TOO BUSY. MY HUSBAND WAS THE ONE HELPING ME WITH EVERYTHING. HE FELT LIKE HE COULDN'T EVEN LEAVE TO EAT. I HAD TO GO TO XRAY ONE DAY WITH BLOOD RUNNING DOWN MY LEGS. BECAUSE, THEY ARE TOO BUSY TO EVEN HELP YOU TAKE CARE OF THAT PERSONAL STUFF. AND I WAS IN NO SHAPE TO TAKE CARE OF IT MYSELF YET. XRAY WAS VERY NICE ABOUT IT THOUGH. I HAD SOME COMPLICATIONS AND THE PA THAT WORKS WITH DR. HARRIS DIDN'T THINK IT WAS ANYTHING. THE NURSE FINALLY WENT OVER HIS HEAD AND CALLED DR. HARRIS. THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG. MY POTASSIUM WAS REALLY LOW.

How Selected: The Hospital that my Surgeon uses and is Cheif of Trauma at.
Competitors: On an Equal footing. Some pluses here some at other hospital.
Comments: I was very Happy with this hospital and they were very supportive. I did notice that some of the nursing staff knew as little about care after the procedure as me, but they were very pleasant and help me find the answers. Most were knowledgable. Also the food seemed to arrive in varing quantities and seemed a little inconsistant. I am very Happy overall though and suspect these minor complaints would happen elsewhere as well.
