| I am a Paramedic & I've seen most of the hospitals in the Phx area from the "inside" out. I had a strong preferrence, I know what I wanted! I even postponed my surgery to get this hospital. |
| Competitors: |
I could compare but I would prefer to leave my comments out. I would recommend you interview the hospitals prior to making a choice, some are very poor inside with a "good" look on the outside. |
| Comments: |
I liked my private room, they had a bed for my husband in the room with me, they were very attentive to me & my needs, the admitting "kit" had every single thing I needed plus more, I was very comfortable in this clean, safe hospital. I would highly recommend it! |

I haven't been to any others in Phoenix, but it was pretty good. I was impressed with the surgeon, nurses and techs. |
| Comments: |
I was pleased with the staff, but having a shared room was rather awful. My two roommates were incredibly noisy, and I got little to no sleep in the hospital. I was told by a nurse "A hospital is not a place to rest - sorry!". Other than that, I had a very good experience.
I've also been back to get my IVC filter taken out, and their staff was so wonderful to me, especially the nurses. |

Banner Desert Samaritan ranks far above Banner Good Samaritan. The rooms are comfortable and questions are met with rapid answers. That was NOT the case at Banner Good Samaritan. |
| Comments: |
My room was never below 78 degrees even though I constantly complained. I left the hospital severely dehydrated. Some of the food that I was served was NOT on my approved list. No one knew how much of the food I should eat. No one bothered to find out either. I left the hospital under-nourished. I would NOT recommend this hospital for bariatric surgery even though my wife has been a nurse there for over 15 years. My experience was beyond description. |

I was born in this hospital 47 years years ago. I can't image that the hospital was this awful back then or my mother would have never had five kids there! I have stayed at TMC and was not overly excited to be there. When I woke up from the anathesia from my hysteretomy I found a young aide going through my bags. As soon as I aksed her what she was doing she left very quietly. When I was in Mt. Graham Regional Hospital I was only there to have my four kids so that's not really fair to rate on.
But I can tell you this much. My stay at Banner Good Sam was by far the worst I have ever had. |
| Comments: |
The preop staff are wonderful. My Dr. was wonderful but the post op staff on the 6th floor pod B was the worst ever. The man next to us had visitors all day and were very loud and obnoxious to the other patients. I wondered why the staff let this go on and then later that night I figured it was because the staff is as loud and obnoxious. It was like they had a huge party right there at the nurses station! I decided after three days there that the only thing that happened on a schedule was shift change. The nurses day or night just left us to our own devises and never even checked on us. If we were walking when they were to take vitals you just didn't get your vitals taken.
I had read other bad reviews and decided to make my own mind up after the surgery. The other bad reviews were right on target! |

Staff ran the gamut from outstanding, to barely ever there. Using new "bari-beds" fro bariatric patients that are combination stretcher, bed, and even wheel cahir. Not the most comfortable bed in the world, but it sure made getting up eaasier with a little assist from the bed |

Still has a way to go to accomadate bariatric pt. Bari bed uncomfortable and staff did not know how to use it. Dietary dept very poor in miminal diet needs. Ex. it took over 9 hrs and many requests by nursing to get a bottle of water after MD ordered liquid. When 1 oz of food was ordered it was not on the lunch or dinner tray and in order to be dcd I had to tolerate a "meal". It finally came at 9pm! Many of the nursing staff were wonderful and I commend them on their hard work from pre-op to discharge. |

The hospital is currently renting "Bari" beds for overweight patients, that can be adjusted for patients to sleep and get out of bed easily. The nurses' directors even asked me my opinion on it - I think it is a great idea!
One small issue: a day before I left, the nurses' station was VERY loud, like they were at a party instead of work. They then had the nerve to come close my door, saying my TV was on too loud! Other than that they were great, but that incident definitely did not bode well for their survey... |

This hospital is excellent in the care that they give to bariatric patients. The nurses know that this was a decision you made to better your life and they are willing to help you through it any way possible. |
| Comments: |
Working for Banner health and having to be admitted to one of there facilities made my recovery smooth and painfree. The nursing staff was there when you called and would continuelousy get you up and walking to help prevent infection or complications. I had two nurses in practical that were very kind and understanding of my pain and discomforts. They did what ever they could to make me more comfortable and make my stay somewhat enjoyable. If anybody thinking of having the surgery done at Good Samaritan I would highly recommend there hospital. |

| Comments: |
Check-in and check-out were both quick. Pre-op care was wonderful. The recovery room and staff weren't great, but I was really drugged up and scared. I had a private room, and I was always helped when needed. I only had one nurse who wasn't awesome. The rest of the nurses were fabulous. I really believe that if you walk when you are supposed to, and do what they ask, they will treat you with respect. I do wish they would have had more nutritional information and that they would have offered some type of emotional support for those who need it. Overall, I give it an "A". |

The only concerns I had with the facility is that being an RNY patient, it was difficult that my room mate wasnt one. So my first 2 days were hell when it came to meal time. The smell of his food was murder and really made me sick. But the staff was on top of things after the first meal, and had the anti nausea meds pumping right away. The only reason they didnt do it the first time was because I was sleeping, and they didnt think it would wake me up and bother me. It did, but they were very responsive to my needs!! All the nursing staff was excellent, and I appreciated all they did for me! |

As a nurse myself I was impressed with the nursing care. My callbell was always answered promptly & when the morphine dosing wasn't initially enough on the pump a call was promptly made to the MD who ok'd the increase. The parking was horrible due to some extensive construction. The room was way to hot for me but nursing staff promptly brought in a fan for me to use. I would go to this hospital again if necessary. |

I have visited Boswell when my Father was going through Heart Bypass surgery. Boswell, although a very nice place asthetically was understaffed and we had to fight for the attention of the nursing staff for him. However, Good Sam was wonderful, whenever I had a need they were right there and never once did I feel judged or pushed aside because of my weight. |
| Comments: |
I really have nothing but wonderful things to say about this hospital and it's staff. The only thing that could use improvement, and I'm sure others who have stayed there will agree, was the horrendous parking. My poor parents had to walk an incredible distance to visit me everyday and my Father hurt even hurt his knee while trying to wave down a hospital shuttle. So, just be warned that the parking is a bit difficult, they do offer valet parking for patients and visitors, but you need to get your keys by 7pm and visiting hours are over at 9pm. However, my overall impression of the hospital is still wonderful! Everyone on staff was very friendly and outgoing and as I said before very non-judgemental. They have oversized gowns and a staff that is well versed in the care of gastric bypass patients! I was on floor 6 Pod A and they were the best! I have to mention Jackie who was my day nurse, talk about a kind, caring, funny and very knowledgible nurse. I couldnt have received better care at any hospital! Do make it a point not to be a huge hindrance, get up and walk, and your stay Im sure will be just as wonderful! Best of luck!! |

Bad nursing care. I have nothing to compart it to. |
| Comments: |
Oh my goodness! Except for one nurse and one nurses aid, they were all so bad. What happened to patient care? What happened to taking time with patients? What happened to changeing sheets? What happened to changing wet sweat soaked gowns? What happened to helping people out of bed or teaching them how to get out without hurting themselves? What happened to professionalism?
The nurse that discharged me at a whole Twix candy bar in front in my while reading my discharge instructions. |

I really enjoyed the interaction of the different nurses they have on this ward. They give gentle encouragement to walk. And I walked even without encouragement every hour. They are there to help and they do! Even with showering, which was very helpful. Since the instructions were to walk every hour during the day and every 2 hours during the night - I independently took this upon myself and continued it. I had difficult getting out of bed and they were there to help. I think this nursing staff is excellent. It was a good experience considering the pain and discomfort. |

In the Phoenix area I don't know, I am from a small town. |
| Comments: |
I was suprised by the entire surgery staff, they were awesome!! When I got to my room after the surgery the nightmare portion of my ordeal began, at first I was given nothing for my nausea, when I finally was it was about 8pm and my surgery was at 8am!!! The poor one male nurse (Ernie who I just loved) was overworked and had over 10 patients to condend with besides me. Then in the evening I got the younger meanie nurse, and lets not forget the very very very rude LPN or whomever they were, not helpful, outright mean and just snapping at people for no reason at all. Luckily however, Ernie is going to be leaving that facility shortly. I was lucky to at least have him on my 2 days stay after lap bypass!!
***I want to add a special heartfelt "thank you" to my wonderful husband Rodger, he was by my side the entire time and without him I wouldn't have had my calf inflatables on and he is the one who helped me to the restroom and get this, the nurses (meanies) kicked him out of the room in the evening, my adorable angel slept 2 full nights in the truck and I anxiously awoke to my calling him on his cell phone when I did need him!!!! I love you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

The only other hospital I have to compare with was when I stayed at Thunderbird Samaritan when I gave birth to my son. I think if I had to rate each stay, T-bird would get about a 7 (the nursing staff didn't quite believe me when I told them I was sick, until my fever reached 106) and Good Sam would get about a 9. My only complaint was the noise at the Nurse's Desk, but had I bothered to shut the door it would have been fine. With my headphones on, couldn't hear them one bit. |
| Comments: |
Everyone was very friendly, from Admissions to Pre-Op, to Recovery to my private room. How I managed that, I will NEVER know but it was FANTASTIC to have a room all to myself. They were really flexibile with my family and friends on visiting times. :o) The nursing staff was wonderful on tracking my progress, making sure I had my meds when I wanted them, and let me sleep whenever I felt the need. They didn't really prod me into walking like I expected them to, I got much more rest than I thought I would. Given the conditions I had during my stay, with the same nursing staff, I would stay at Good Sam again in a heartbeat! :o) Have to say, the Valet Parking was certainly a nice touch... ;o) |

Well let's see, I had to be up walking every 3 hours (no problems with that) however it sucked that I was the one that had to hook and unhook my NG tube, unplug my IV machine, take off my oxygen and put my own binder on. If my mother wasn't with me the whole time I was in there I would've ended up hurting someone severly. There lack of compassion for people and the lack willingness to help sucked! |

I was generally pleased with my care and my accommodations. The pre-op staff was terrific--everyone was attentive and it was clear that their mission was to put me at ease. The recovery room was also very good, I was moved up to my private room within 90 minutes of leaving the operating room. The floor nurses were attentive, responded promptly to my call button. Dr. Juarez uses a morphine pump for pain relief, so getting pain meds was not an issue. |

I think Good Samaritan is a highly rated hospital. They should have stuck to the rules on the number of visitors and visiting hours. I did not get any rest during my stay. Patient care was ok - It would have been a much better experience if I did not have to share a room with someone who had no clue as to what I was going through. My room mate had visitors all hours of the day - the nurses did not even come in to ask the visitors to keep the noise down. |

The nurses at the nurses station were loud. The rooms are small - so if you have a visitor they have to stand right on top of you. |

First off I have to say my experience and families experience with them when I had my surgery was a horrible experience care wise for ME, the patient as to my needs and listening to what I was saying....as far as the staff goes in post-op and on the floor. Pre-op they were great, kind and caring.
BUT, I did have to go back into the hospital a few months later and was put on a different section of the same floor and was given the best care possible I could imagine. So I believe it has to do with the floor-section and the staff. So I suggest that if anyone has any kind of negative experiences ask kindly to speak to a supervisor not the floor nurse and request a change to a different floor/section asap. It's your right, don't suffer as I feel I did the first time around. It never shoudl be that way. |

Good Sam was wonderfully helpful. I was lucky to have fabulous nurses and aid's to take care of me. I was pleasantly surprised. I don't know how restful any stay will be, as they are urging you to walk as often as possible. I was up roughly every two hours the first night to do "laps" around the nurses station. It was a wonderful experience and I was a little disappointed to leave my nurse, Margaret. She was the best... So encouraging! |

Most of the staff was helpful and kind. From the admissions office, pre-op to post op floor. I just had the roommates from hell. My sister who also had the surgery on the same day and was on the same floor had a WONDERFUL experience, she also was fortunate enough to have a private room and that I believe can make a huge difference. I just has a couple of medical aids the first night who had no idea what they were doing, other than that it was a good experience. |

The majority of the staff was very polite. Pre-op I was very scared and there was a nurse who asked me if I was *sure* I wanted to do this and calmed me down. Post-op the unit staff was polite, but I don't think they completely understood how hard it might be to do some normally run-of-the-mill tasks (like going to the bathroom and showering) with an incision. At first you're a little scared to move too quickly or unable to twist around. They could have offered to be a little more helpful. |

The hospital made my stay pleasant and convenient, especially since it is 110 miles from home. They provide a hotel type wing for spouses and family at a moderate price. The staff was great, as well at other physicians and specialists that cared for me. I was never allowed to be in pain or distress, and care was taken to explain procedures in detail. Patient education was beneficial as well. I would definitely use their services again.. |

I was discharged in less than 48hrs and the staff would help me whenever I needed. My poor daughter had her wls at St. Lukes and was there 6days and the experience was god aweful. |
| Comments: |
The rooms are noisy but the nurses station is right there. If you can't find your call light they are close enough to hear your voice. They had working equipment. they had plenty of clean sheets, gowns, towels, washcloths, IV stands with working wheels, they had IV's on pumps so you got what you were supposed to, staff answered calls within a few minutes, the staff made rounds to check on patients, the staff encouraged the walking and the breathing bottles, they had the huge abdominal binders in stock and helped me when I needed help, etc. This might seem like standard stuff but my daughter had her surgery at St.Lukes and all that would have been a luxury if she could have gotten even half of the list. |

I am so glad my mom was there to help me with my care or I would have received very little care at all! Wanted a private room but had to settle for semi-private. |

| It is the hospital that Dr. Newhoff does most of his surgeries at. I am a Phoenix native and Good Sam has always been my families hospital of choice (I was born there as were my 2 children!). I feel very comfortable and confident in the care that I have received there. |

I only had one other hospital stay other than at Good Sam and the experience and care I received was somewhat less than I experienced at Good Sam. |

Just as good as the others: I've been at Thunderbird Sam and Maricopa County;and I would recommend my friends to this hospital. |

The only problem that I did have with this hospital was that they didn't provide the bypass patients with any after care visits to the dietician, or anything like they do at St. Luke's. |

I have only been to hospitals in Tucson and Good Sam's does not hold a candle to any of the hospitals in Tucson, especially Northwest! |
| Comments: |
Please beware if you are going too Good Sam's your family member's while waiting for you will be treated as if they don't exsist and if you ask how a family member is doing the volenteer at the desk will ignore you,and if you keep insisting she will more then likely call security on you! It took from 11:15 am til 9:00Pm to get a room. M y view of Good Sam's is not a positive one. I wish everyone else better luck! |

I was very impressed. The pre-op paperwork was handled smoothly. I was called two days before to be sure I had directions or any questions. The staff was wonderful. The pre-op nurse explained things very well. The anesthesiologist was warm and personable. Post op the staff was great. I was such a mess-blind without my contacts, barely able to speak because of the sore throat and G tube, I was always tangled up in something and they responded with kindness each time I called. |

I would like to thank the very kind staff at Good Sam. The Nurses were wonderful, the aides and techs cheerful and helpful, even the guy who brought in my clear liguid diet tray called me by name and asked how I was doing. I give Good Sam high marks in my book! |

Speaking for myself only, I was attended to beautifully. However, I also took care of my own needs when I could. I walked, walked, walked. I called a nurse when I needed one and did things myself when I could. I was always respectful of them, and they were always respectful of me. |
