Statistics
Obesity is an epidemic that is taking its toll on Americans. Almost two-thirds of adults are overweight or obese.  Obesity leads to even more serious medical issues such as hypertension, heart disease, pulmonary dysfunction, depression, joint pain, back problems, diabetes mellitus, sleep apnea, problems with urination or menstruation.

Taking control
Most candidates for weight loss surgery have struggled with obesity and have had numerous attempts at dieting.  To qualify for bariatric surgery, you must have a body mass index (BMI) greater than or equal to 40 or 35 in addition to other serious health problems such as diabetes or heart disease.

What is Bariatric Surgery?
Once you and your surgeon have decided that weight loss surgery is the answer for you, the next decision will be to determine the procedure.  Baylor - Plano offers three types of minimally invasive weight loss surgical procedures:

  1. Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) “Gastric Bypass”
  2. Laparoscopic adjustable gastric band (Lap-Band®) surgery
  3. Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
  4. Laparoscopic revisional surgery

Expectations After Surgery
Within four weeks after surgery, you can expect to lose up to 20 pounds, and within 18-24 months, you can expect to lose 60-80 percent of your excess body weight.  Individual results may vary.

In addition to weight loss, many medical complications associated with obesity such as diabetes
and hypertension will generally improve.
