How Selected: THIS IS WHERE MY SURGEON PRACTICES. I CAN NOT SAY ENOUGH ABOUT THE STAFF ON 6A! I NEVER MET ANYONE DURING MY STAY THAT WAS RUDE OR UNFEELING.
Comments: THE HOSP IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION BUT THEY WILL ACCOMADATE YOU IN ANY WAY THEN CAN. IT IS CLEAN AND UP TO DATE WITH EQUIPMENT. BEING A NURSE I LOOK FOR THING LAY PEOPLE WOULD KNOW TO LOOK FOR.

How Selected: i work there, in the operating room with bariatic patients and we take the best care of our patient when they come i also help in translating to spanish patinet so they feel more comfortable and not alienated when they enter the operating room. all patients are explained what it is that we are placing on them while they are awake so that they unserstand.

How Selected: It is one of the best hospital in the area.
Competitors: There was no comparison in my mind. I was either going to get it done at Baystate or I was going to Boston.

How Selected: My research on the internet. Dr. Coe studied with the pioneer of the GB procedure. BCMS also is affiliated with Tufts University bringing innovation to the table.
Competitors: My local hospital is very small in comparison and doesn't handle the volume of surgeries or the type of surgery I had. I'm very pleased with the services I received.
Comments: The staff is very friendly and courteous. I didn't feel they were over burdened with my questions or requests for assistance.

How Selected: This is the hospital that my insurance allows me to go to. This is also the hospital that I have always gone to in any situation. I had my son at this hospital and enjoy all of the staff.
Competitors: I have never been to another hospital, however, through conversations I have had with other friends or acquintances, I have only heard great things about Baystate and have heard not so good things about Mercy (the other hospital in this area).

How Selected: I didnt that is where my Dr. preforms his surgerys.
Competitors: I really couldnt say. I just moved to this state one year ago.
Comments: I feel that they should have a ward just for people that have had WLS b/c after you leave recovery. I was sent to the floor where people that have bone surgery. It was not a pretty sight.

How Selected: It was were my surgeon was, and Ive had other family members stay there.
Comments: The nurses were great. They did everything possible to keep me comfortable. There was one nurse though that was a witch. I was crying because I was in pain and she came in and told me "NO ONE MADE YOU DO THIS, SO U CAN STOP BEING UPSET NOW." I was pissed... But everyone else was great and waited on me hand and foot.

How Selected: It was the hospital Dr. Fiallo was associated with
Competitors: I found that at the time of my surgury they were very unprepared to deal with bariatric surgury patients. The had little knowledge of the needs of a bariatric patient.
Comments: My stay overall was adequate except for one incident caused by an inadequate RN. She gave me a shot of morphine too quickly and caused me to vomit blood profusely for 6 hours. Luckily it caused no damage and I was alright.

How Selected: Insurer covered both Mercy, and Baystate. Surgeon operates out of both. So I'll just have to pick one.

How Selected: This is where my surgeon is.
Comments: I had only one problem in the hospital and that was witht he roomate. The nurses switched her room.

How Selected: My doctor operates in this hospital so no real choice.
Competitors: Cannot compare.
Comments: Nurses were fairly responsive to my needs. The changeover time, from 6-7 am was horrible - no one would come when I rang bell. I had to go the bathroom (and thus, had to be unhooked from all the ivs, leg massagers, oxygen) and got very upset waiting. Almost had an accident.

How Selected: My primary care physician is affiliated with the Baystate Medical Center and referred me to Dr. Munshi, who was then replaced Dr. Kuhn who performed my surgery, also practices out of Baystate Medical Center.
Competitors: I would have to say Baystate is an excellent hospital. I know Mercy is also a great hospital, but never really had to go there for anything.
Comments: I find the staff at Baystate very helpful at all times I go there for any visits, exams, etc. My care and treatment after my surgery was excellent. The nurses were very attentive to my needs and checked on me every couple of hours for point of care treatment and accommodated my requests. They were very nice to my family who visited me also.

How Selected: I Knew a few people who had surgery here and they liked the doctor also it is where I had my son

Comments: I was not happy about how unresponsive to my needs they were. on 2 differant occasions I called for over 30 min. for pain medsand the only reason I ended up getting them was because I got out of bed and walked to the nurses station.

Competitors: The hospital is ok. I have had better care from a more dedicated staff at another area hospital
Comments: The patients needs should be met at a more accomodating speed.Ex. when a surgery pt. is moved from recovery to the room all the immediate equipment should be available that the patient will be needing. The right size and kind of airboots for the patiet and pump. Medications did not arrive from the pharmacy on time or at the right dose. When it finally arrived it was too far into the day to give any dose as it would interfere with the next dose.There was alot of small pieces of litter in the halls that made it difficult to walk as directed and hold onto the rail. Dirty linen carts were in the way. Chairs were in the way. Stacks of rehab equipment in halls. In general I was not impressed with the floor staff or the housekeeping. There were a couple of times I had to repeatedly ask for something I was supposed to have (ice chips)after three request to 1 person and nothing I asked someone else and finally got them. An appology from the assigned staff member was given but the point is why did he forget three different times. These were part of my planIt seemed that as soon as he walked out of the room he would forget what he was doing. There were some very attentive staff members that were on top of evrything.

How Selected: This is where my surgeon performs the surgery.
Competitors: I was in Cooley Dickenson for the birth of my son and had a wonderful experience.
Comments: I just felt as though the nurses did not have a good understanding of why I was there and also very unresponsive to my call button and I was not that demanding. Took a very long time to respond to my machines beeping and bringing my meds.

How Selected: Searched for local lap-RNY surgeons through ObesityHelp.com and one that I found was affiliated with this hospital. The hospital has an excellent WLS program, with pre-op and post-op support and info meetings, therapists, nutritionists, and surgeons.
Comments: It's the only Level 1 Trauma Unit in Western Massachusetts. Doctors, nurses and TAs (Technical Associates, who provide basic bedside care) were great. Everyone was so nice, both day and night shifts. Gave "Good," not "Excellent" in some categories simply because my husband is a nurse and provided a lot of my bedside care, taking the load off the nurses and TAs.

How Selected: One of the better / biggest hospitals in my area

Comments: The only real problem I had is that I had a real bothersome room mate, and because of her family situations they did not make it easy for me to stay in my room for any length of time. I had to walk the halls all hours of the day and night.

How Selected: It is the hospital my Obesity program uses.
Competitors: My local hospital--Cooley Dickinson Hospital-- could not even compare to this hospital and I am so thankful that I did not have to do there for anything. We have many hospitals in the are--many closer to me that Baystate but they just don't rate. Baystate is the cream of the crop-- state of the art--immpedciably trained -- top pf the hospitals in our are. In another hospital--Mercy hospital-- they are gaining a poor reputation for their obesity surgical program.
Comments: Best post -op nursing staff in the valley. I had some recovery complications and the hospital and staff were more than prepared to handle them or anything else that came their way. Plus the bedside manner was wonderful. Especially the nursing staff of Centennial 6 and the surgical/trauma teams.

Comments: baystate medical is a very professional, clean, and accomodating hospital....I never felt once that I was being judged by my size...all the nurses were very nice and compassionate....I think they did a great job....

Competitors: There is one other major hospital in our city (Mercy). I'm not sure how they compare.
Comments: Just about everything was good about my stay except a few very important points. I was having a breathing problem (see profile) and had 2 unresponsive and uppity nurses. Other than these 2 night nurses, the care I received was fine. My brother told me that the woman in the family waiting room was didn't do her job and made personal phone calls the whole time he and other families were waiting. She had promised to tell him when I was in a room, after several hours (and many of her personal phone calls), my brother went up and asked her and she said I'd gotten a room an hour and a half ago :-( . My brother said she was snippy with him when he got upset about that. They also messed up my paperwork describing which type of RNY surgery I was supposed to have, which worked out fine for me but could have been disasterous in someone else's situation.

How Selected: This is the hospital that my surgeon operates out of .So I didn't have a chose of hospitals to choose from.
Competitors: They all are about the same. I've only been to 2 hospitals in my life time. At least they didn't move me at 2in the morning like the other hospital that I had been at did.
Comments: this hospital is big. To me anyhow. The nursing staff for the most part were very good. Some were alittle more "mean" than the others. some were very sweet.

Competitors: Let's say I would rather have to travel 50 minutes than go to Harrington Hospital in Southbridge. Uggh!

Comments: My stay at this hospital was good.I had two sets of nurses that were wonderful and one set(RN & aide) that weren't very pleasant.Overall it is a very good place.

How Selected: It is my surgeon's hospital.
Competitors: I believe that BMC is the BEST in this area.
Comments: The only thing that I regret is the room sharing/accomodations. There was really old lady, who was really sick and couldn't sleep at night. I didn't get much rest because of this. I think they shoud place patients according to their needs.

How Selected: This is the only hospital my surgeon does does this surgery.
Comments: Baystate Medical delivered outstanding service and care. The nursing staff was very attentive and delivered compasionate and professional care.

How Selected: Well, it is the largest hospital network in the area. I became interested in the work of the bypass surgeon that works there. So that is where I went. I had another surgery at this hospital, so I felt comfy in my decision.
Competitors: Well I had another surgery at another local hospital, and I would say that Baystate was much better equipped and attentive to the needs of obese persons.
Comments: The day nurses were a little hard to deal with, they did what they needed to, however I had to demand to get up and WALK! The night nurses were a god-send! Friendly, sweet, and helpfull, also very encouraging. I guess they can be more attentive, there is less to do at night. I don't hold it against the day nurses.
