About this Hospital

St. Mary's Hospital
5801 Bremo Road
Richmond, VA 23226
804-285-2011
For the past 30 years, St. Mary's Hospital has utilized the latest in medical technology to cater to Central Virginia's patient population. It ranks in the top 10% of America's hospitals for emergency care, our Joint Replacement Center has been recognized nationally and Style Magazine voted our birthing center as the best place in Richmond to have a baby.

Located in Richmond's West End, St. Mary's is well known for its excellent nurse-to-patient ratio which keeps both our patients and our staff happy. Our 391-bed hospital, medical office buildings and physician practices offer services from a wide range of specialties.

Our focus on complete health facilitates positive outcomes.

Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital has specially-designed equipment, patient education tools and comprehensive patient care plans to accommodate and support weight loss surgery patients. The approach taken by the medical teams that perform bariatric procedures at St. Mary's focuses on a patient's complete health. This includes psychological, nutritional and physical evaluations, counseling, support groups and long-term coordination of care. Gastric bypass should not be viewed as a "magic wand" procedure, but one that plays a vital role in helping overweight patients achieve their long-term health and wellness goals. Therefore, success of the procedure not only requires a dedicated medical team, but full participation and follow through from the patient. This decision is a life-changing event and a process that requires a life-long commitment.

How Selected: My surgeon has his Bariatric surgery practice here.
Competitors: St Mary's has worked hard to improve their Bariatric program and it shows. I can't say enough about the excellent/caring care that I received.
Comments: St Mary's hospital is totally there to make their pt's feel as comfortable as possible. The hospital was VERY clean, my room was good size, ALL the nurse's/ancilllary staff/dietary/housekeeping/volunteers/receptionists/admitting were true professionals and never left me "lost" in the big hospital. My calls for pain meds were answered and responded quickly. I came home feeling that they had taken great care of me. I use to work at another hospital in Richmond for 16 years. St Mary's has them beat hands down.

Competitors: I have had dealing with St. Mary's before, as well as some other local hospitals. St. Mary's is the best hands down.
Comments: I feel I recieved what was advertised. As a Center of Excellence hospital, I felt I recieved the best possible care. The staff of nurses there are well educated and easily connected with the patient. They all are very experienced and have been at St. Mary's for some time. You could tell that they all throughly enjoyed their work. This was my besy possible choice and I am glad I was under their care.

How Selected: This is the hospital that Dr. Schroder's office is located in. Besides that, St. Mary's is a wonderful hospital.
Competitors: This hospital is and would be my first choice.
Comments: My nurses were excellent. Even those that appeared to be introverts - let my extrovert personality kinda draw a smile and little bit of conversation. I did have a favoriate nurse - Melissa G ... she was very easy to talk to and comforting even though she was constantly being called to go back and forth between me and other patients. She handled it well.

Comments: 5 am I was suppose to be there in admitting, but they didn’t open till 5:30am even tho the sign said 6am. Not very stress reliving when your having surgery. Nurses: AMY and KATIE were awesome nurses in Cardio Pulmonary. One of the night nurses didn’t know how to properly draw blood.(Ouch) so she had someone else do it. The last nurse I didn’t have for very long so I couldn’t say.. Very noisy I was right by the sundry facilities. I had to keep asking for the door to be shut so I could sleep and the IV machine kept beeping. Check out was pretty easy!

Comments: This is a great hospital. I have no complaints with the hospital. The person answering the call bell leaves something to be desired as there were several times my nurse "claims" she didnt get my messages. I rang once and 2 hrs later, my "night" shift nurse came in. Shifts had changed before the nurse finally came in to check on me. My IV had infiltrated and I rang at 7:10pm to tell them. At 9:15pm, the night nurse came in to do rounds. I was in pain and my arm was swollen! I had finally cut off the IV myself. We also waited an hour to be discharged once the doctor left my room and another hour for a wheelchair to come up. My husband finally had to go up to desk SEVERAL times and get a little stern with them. We had a 3 hr drive home! Other than these things, my stay went very well. My first 2 nurses were awesome and I couldnt have asked for better!

How Selected: My surgeon practices there.
Competitors: It is older and outdated. The nursing staff would not bring my pain medicine as they were supposed to and more often than not they ended up skipping a dose so I had to lay there in pain for 2 more hours. One nurse actually told me to my face that she didnt have time to come in my room every 2 hours even tough that is what my surgeon prescribe.
Comments: Old hospital. Good Cafeteria Good doctors but the 5th floor nurses on the surgery wing were not good at all. I will not go back there unless it is a serious emergency.

How Selected: My decision in choosing a hospital was actually in my surgeon's hands. I would go wherever he did his surgeries. I felt that I was in the best possible care with Dr. Neil Hutcher and therefore St. Mary's was the hospital in which he practices.
Competitors: It was very good although the gastric bypass unit was in an older part of the hospital and did not offer private rooms. Other than that I was very pleased.
Comments: The staff was wonderful to me during my 5 day stay. I would go there again if I needed attention.

How Selected: Surgeon was very familiar with this hosptial and uses them extensively.
Competitors: It is not my first choice when going in for other things.
Comments: Due to some unknown circumstance, my surgery, which was scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m., did not actually start until 5:00 p.m. Neither I nor my family was informed of the reason for the delay and I nervously imaginged the worst (the previous patient dying). The anestesiologist was tired of waiting and STAPLED the central line into my neck - it was so painful to remove and left a scar! What a JERK! Hosptial didn't realize I was having an adverse reaction to morphine (nausia, nonstop crying, etc.) just thought I was crazy. I finally had enough sense to stop pressing the button and told the nurse that I was in pain, but couldn't take the morphine - I was willing to take tylenol only if that is what they could offer. I felt much better when prescribed a different med, nearly 12 hours later. A nurse came in to clean my room at 1:00 a.m. The leg compression socks were too tight, cutting into my skin due to some swelling (actually broke the skin open) and the nurse was unable to find a sock that would fit. Truly not the best hospital experience. I am blessed that it was only two days long.

How Selected: My surgeon's group, Richmond Surgical Group practices here and this group was the only group that would help me with my problem.
Competitors: I was in Sentara Bayside Hospital in Va Beach for a week before transferring to St Mary's. The difference was night and day. St Mary's staff was professional, caring and well trained; Bayside was not.
Comments: Everyone from the admitting office to the cleaning people were professional and caring. The floor I was on was equipped for nothing but bariatric patients. My band eroded and got infected and had to be remvoved. This was not a common problem and not many surgeons had experience with this problem. I was well cared for at St Mary's and would recommend it highly to anyone.

How Selected: My doctor operates at two hospitals, but I was impressed with the cleanliness, friendly employees and the special bariatric equipment.
Competitors: I thought it was better than a university-based hospital near where I live, but not as good as our local not-for-profit.
Comments: I would recommend St. Mary's. I had good nurses overall (just one that was grumpy). They were responsive to my needs, and even though I was in intensive care I was allowed to have visitors anytime. I had a private room and they were great about letting me get out and walk around. The food isn't great, so family wasn't happy about that, but otherwise, it is a good place to have surgery.
