How Selected:	I truly wanted Dr. Hornbostel to do my surgery and this is the hospital he does the WLS in.
Comments:	I really enjoyed my visit and the staff who worked with me were very nice, caring and helpful.

Competitors:	This was the cleanest, friendliest hospital that I have been at - EVER! The staff was EXCELLENT in their care and consideration of me.
Comments:	I can't say enough for the staff at this hospital. They made the stay there better than I expected by far. Very concerned and super helpful!

How Selected:	This was the hospital that my Surgeon used.
Competitors:	I am not from that local area, however I was pleased overall with the facilities, care, and compassion versus other hospitals I have been in.
Comments:	This hospital is well equipped to handle bariatric patients with no exception. The staff are compassionate and caring and not judgemental. I would recommend this hospital to friends if the need arised.

Competitors:	I'd say that this was the best one I've been in.
Comments:	I enjoyed my stay as much as I could, but there were a few nurses that I didn't feel comfortable with. I didn't feel that they really cared very much, but that was one in particular. Other than that, the general stay was overall pretty nice.

Comments:	loved the staff, the room was small but o.k, the only negative was the bathroom, the toilet area was just so small, I could barely bend anyway because of the pain, but that cramped space was terrible.

How Selected:	I researched gastric bypass & infection rates through my insurance company files online. Bothwell rated much (much) higher than my home state hospitals did.
Competitors:	They are much more prepaired for overweight patients. I never saw so much handwashing by a hospital staff- This observation includes National Institutes of Health (I've been going there for 8 years)! How wonderful!!!
Comments:	I had a very excellent experience while admitted for my surgery. I was in-house 3 days & never had a problem. If I complain about anything, it would be small bathrooms. The beds were very comfy & can even be made longer for us taller patients!

Competitors:	The rooms were so tiny and the bathrooms even worse especially for an obese person.
Comments:	The staff was nice and personable however the accomadations were horrible rooms too small and they didn't have any accomadations for family members to stay there with their loved ones. The Hospital itself is old and it shows they need to upgrade their facility especially to accomandate the obese if they want to continue doing baratric surgeries.

Comments:	I had a good experience. I went into surgery on Friday and came home on Sunday. Other than the shower/bathroom being too small for an overweight person all was well.

Comments:	My first impression was that it was looked "rinky dink" and outdated- and was concerned about the quality of care I would receive, but after my surgery was over I had no complaints about my care- I was pleased.

How Selected:	This is the Hospital Of Exellence that my Dr. works at. THE ONLY REASON I would pick this particular hospital.
Competitors:	On the one thing a Woman would NEED - VERY POOR compared to other hospitals in this region. To my chagrin, I found the restrooms extremely TINY. To sit upon the stool, forward enough to urinate into the measurement cap, I Literally had to HUG the sink becuase it is so close to the stool. I found this VERY uncomfortble, unsanitary, and almost impossible to do. I am not a severely obsese person (265) but I can feel for anyone larger than me trying to do this deed for the nurses. The the TP was behind me so the only way I could reach it was by standing up and tring to do the paperwork after the fact. I was embarrassed that I couldn't do this simple task without making a mess of the bathroom floor.
Comments:	With the exception of the "Bathroom situation" I stumbled through - I found almost all the other things appropriate.

Competitors:	It was an exellent hospital compared to the one hospital I've stayed in the past.
Comments:	Overall Bothwell Hospital was an exellent place to have WLS, the staff was great and treated me with respect and care. If I had to do it all over again I'd pick Bothwell any day!

How Selected:	Bothwell is where Dr. Hornbostel does his surgery and it is close to where I live. I've used Bothwell for many years and have always been treated great!
Competitors:	Bothwell is a great deal better than some of the other local hospitals in the area. The staff is more friendly and they try their best to take care of all your needs.
Comments:	I've always been happy with Bothwell. I've had several surgeries there and have no complaints at all.

Competitors:	My favorite hospital is Boone Hospital Center and this hospital does not compare to Boone they are the best.
Comments:	The bathrooms are very small not big enough for larger people and the rooms in general are very small.

How Selected:	I needed a Bariatric Surgical Center of Excelence as required by Medicare. This is the closest one to me and Dr. Hornbostel works from there.
Competitors:	I don't think any hospital I've been to recently gives you a quality of care that matches the price they charge you. Bothwell Regional was no different. I guess I feel like if I'm paying my surgeon $6000/hr and the hospital $20,000 for a 3 day stay then I deserve the best.
Comments:	The Surgical staff was excelent. I was given good care and they were actually concerned for me. Once I was on my floor though that changed. It seems the staff is more interested in punching the time clock than treating patients. I rarely asked for anything since my wife was there to help me. When I did ask it took a long time to get help. The nurses don't like leaving the station. On the evening of my surgery my I V came out. I was on a moriphine pump for pain and the I.V. was my only relief. It took over an hour to get someone to restart my I.V. I had trouble getting them to give me meds that I must have. They are pysichiatric meds so they just didn't consider them important. I had to forcefully explain more than once because they don't seem to write things down or communicate between shifts. My doctor saw me and ordered a morphine injection before I left to go home. I had a 2 1/2 hour drive home and he wanted me to be as comfortable as possible. No one wrote it down. I was refused the shot when I asked for it. All I had to come home with was oral meds I picked up at Walgreens. It was not entirely helpful. I can't say enough about the surgical staff. They were excelent. It was the rest of my stay that was so bad. I don't like to give anyone this kind of review. It's just my surgery went very well. I didn't need or ask for much. My wife and I took care of most things. But someone else may not have an easy of time. They might require much more care. I'm just not convinced they will get it. UPDATE: In fairness all of the complaints I have above stem from poor communication of the nursing staff. My Dr. has told me that when he left my room abruptly one morning he did so to address that very issue. I guess he didn't like the lack of detail and incompleteness of my chart. This problem has been sternly addressed and I've been assured the issue is solved. Since I can't change my experience I can't change what I originally wrote. So I'm giving this update instead. Also in fairness this hospital was new at being a Bariatric Center of Excellence so there may have been bugs in the system.

Comments:	The rooms are small and the bathrooms are not a size to accomodate someone that is very obese. Their pillows leave a lot to be desired.

Competitors:	I would have preferred going to Kansas City, but with my insurance, it wasn't an option.
Comments:	I felt the surgery was great, the nurses were not. I knew going in that I was a "lightweight", but at every turn, I received comments from the nursing staff about how I didn't need this surgery and that I was the smallest patient ever bypassed at this facility. They were slow to respond to calls and even slower to respond to needs...the night nurses the first night were great, I can't remember all their names, but Casey sticks out. I really appreciated her. Overall, not surprised about the care, but definitely not impressed!

How Selected:	I selected the best surgeon and this happened to be the hospital he used. Dr. Hornbostel is a wonderful doc.
Competitors:	I rated it #1 in the 8-9 sugery centers I have used with my family-over the years.
Comments:	Bothwell Medical is very clean and has the most caring people I have ever met. Even the anetheasiologist was terrific and tried to anticipate any special needs I would have. I highly reccomend this facility, it is a special place.

Competitors:	I think that Bothwell would compare very nicely with North Kansas City Memorial Hosp. which is the only hospital I would be familiar with. Even though NKCMH is a larger hospital.
Comments:	I have not had surgery yet, but I am having surgery in Dec.2004. I am unable to stand which poses a big problem at most places I have to go. I was very impressed with Bothwell Hospital, they treated me with the upmost respect and concern. The pre-op testing nurses and technicians where so friendly and eager to make me comfortable. 12-10-04 I am now 4 daays post-op and my experience at Bothwell was wonderful!!!!!!!

How Selected:	It was the one nearest me and I heard the surgeon was great!
Comments:	Well, I felt that I had WONDERFUL care in the CCU, but it went downhill fast when I went to the main recovery floor. I used the call button (I was a fall hazard) and NO ONE came to help me to the restroom. So here I was, hours out of the CCU, dragging my IV pole, trying to use a walker and get to the bathroom. I even pulled the emergency pull in the bathroom and no one every came. Finally the PT people came to take me and I said I needed a nurse, they went back and told the nurses who STILL never came. This was just ONE of the bad experiences I had up there.

Comments:	Pre-op testing was very quick and thorough...was very impressed with the layout of the different testing units. In-pt...all rooms are private, but extremely small and offers little in the way of seating visitors with any comfort. I was especially disappointed in the size of the bathrooms...when dealing with obese pt. the bathroom size should be accommodating. Over all the nursing care was very good and quick to respond to my needs.

Competitors:	The only other hospital that I have been in was in Lake of the Ozarks Regional Hospital for cellulitis and the staff was o.k. They did take good care of me.
Comments:	The hospital is clean, the staff needs to pay more attention to the patient, and if you have your surgery there, be prepared to have someone to help you besides the staff. I'm glad they are there but I really was glad my daughter was there to help me.

I was a little afraid at first because the hospital seemed so small, but after my initial pre-op visit and then the surgery stay, it was great and I would gladly refer my closest family and friends to this hospital. The nurses were great. I had read a few posts about this hospital and was a little afraid, but evidently they didn't know what they were talking about, because the nurses were so sweet.

Comments:	This is my opinion, someone else might have a totaly different experience. I felt I was pretty much ignored. I am not a demanding person. I think that if you are in a hospital that they should at lest check on you every few hours. They did not want to do much with you if you are overweight. That was the impression I got anyway. I had a room that did not have a bed table. They did drag a chair over for me to put stuff on. I could not use the phone because they could not get the chair close enough to the phone so it could sit on it. The nurses said that they could not find a table for me. About an hour before I checked out,one of the housekeeping staff noticed that I did not have one. She brought me one. She told me that they were in the room across the hallway. I was brought up from surgery at 11:00 that morning and my compression boots that were supposed to be working until I left the next day were not turned back on until 7.:30 that night. My IV was unhooked in the afternoon when an RN came in to give me some meds and told me she had to "pee real bad" and would be right back. She did not come back and the RN that came in my room at 7:00 found it unhooked. She was also the one that got my boots to work. Apparently you had to push a special button. She told me my doc would have a fit if he knew that they were not working. Her name was Carrie and she was very caring. She checked on me quit a bit that evening. No one asked me if I needed help to walk. When I was readmitted to the hospital a day after I was released with dehydration and a swollen shut stoma, I requested not to be put back on the surgical floor. My doctor said no problem. He did not act surprised at the request. I would recommed that someone be with you at all times there! You can bet I had someone with me the second time I was in there. I would give them a poor rating. My doctor was really good, though I wish he worked out of another hospital.

Comments:	I recieved EXCELLENT care while in ICU. Had to stay there longer than usual, due to no room on the surgical floor being available. But that was good. The nurses in ICU were wonderful. Especially Debbie!

Comments:	I can say everyone was friendly to me and very helpful. I was only there a little over 2 days but I didn't have any problems with any of them.

Comments:	The nurses in CCU were wonderful, very attentative. The nurses on the surgical floor were nice but overworked. They were understaffed but the nurses were very pleasant when they checked on you, etc.

Comments:	The CCU nurses were SO good, and were there at my bedside a lot. The surgery floor nurses were pretty good, but the best one was on nights, her name was Carrie.

How Selected:	FROM MY FRIEND THAT I MET ON THIS WEVSITE SHE HAD HERS DONE AT THIS HOSPTIAL AND WAS THE ONLY ONE CLOSE BY THAT DID THIS TYPE OF SURGERY. ADJUSTABLE LAP BAND.
Competitors:	VERY CLEAN AND COMFORTABLE JUST NEEDS TO HAVE WIDER CHAIRS IN WAITING AREA AND MORE PLACE FOR PEOPLE TO CRASH IF THEY NEED TO STAY OVER NIGHT. WOULD GO BACK EVEN IF IT IS A LONG DRIVE

How Selected:	Bothwell Regional is the hospital my surgeon is affiliated with.
Competitors:	Bothwell is a small down home hospital, I think it makes them more in tune to the client needs and wishes.

How Selected:	I didn't really select this hospital, it is the Hospital where Dr. Hornbostel does his surgeries.
Competitors:	Since I don't live in Sedalia, I can't compare it to any hospital there, but I can compare it with hospitals in Kansas City. I was so impressed with Bothwell Regional's organization. They had all their ducks lined up in a row and registration, pre-op assessment, and everything else all the way to the surgery room was almost orchestrated.
Comments:	After Surgery I was moved to their CCU (Critical Care Unit) and I have never been given such good care after any of my surgeries. They were at my beside constantly and took care of every need I had. I recommend this hospital highly.

How Selected:	By selecting the surgeon the hospital came with the package.
Competitors:	The hospital is small and scary when arriving there you put your name on a piece of paper and put thru a slot in a door and wait for someone to come out and get you. It was like going to visit someone in prison. very poorly and very unpeople like. There were not helpful at all.
Comments:	My general comments are to stay clear from this hospital. The CEO of the hosp canceled me 2 days prior to surgery and if that wasn't bad enough I have tried for weeks to get thru to him for some other arangements of payment and He has not even returned my calls. If at all possible stay away from here.
