| Brookwood is one of the Hspitals that my surgeon works out of and it also has a transfusion free program and that was the most important thing to me. I refuse transfusions. |

The ICU staff was wonderful. The floor staff (one shift) below average. This is the only hospital in this area I have been in. |

Other than having trouble with one shift of lazy nurses regarding pain meds ( I resoved this quickly by paging the house supervisor) I had excellent care. The ICU nurse that took care of me was an excellent nurse and compassionate. |

This hospital is fully dedicated to WLS patients. I was first in the morning and arrived there about 5.30. The morning coordinator wasn't happy about so many people being there, but I can under stand that. Once they opened, I was taken back by my escort. My family was kept informed and was with me until I was taken in. Every step of the way was fine. I only got apprehensive after meeting with the Anesthesiologist. Dr. Sandy Sipe. I wish we had a forum for her. She was nice and upfront and told me of the extra precautions due to my size. She even let me up to manually go to restroom one last time before starting her stuff. I was only upset when they put thething in my mouth then 2 seconds they started the drugs and I was gone. Next thing I woke up about 2.5 hrs later. When they said Pain 1-10 and I said what pain, everyone laughed. My aunt babysits Holly nurse/anes child. Holly took care of me like I was her own. They let me sleep then I had time before ICU. by 2 p.m I was up walking. Next day dr was great and I was moved to room with bed for WLS sized person. They insisted on getting a more comfortable bed. Day nurses Dot and Kelly went the extra mile. When I got the OK on Fri 8-27 to have drink, they made sure I got a variety. Dr Stahl made the rounds - I was eating a popcicle. He understood. Got to go home Sat after Dr. Sherer saw me and OK's discharge. While mama ran to get the car, I said, wait let me make sure I can shower with 39 staples exposed. It was a piece of cake. I was already like a new person. Had to have help a couple of days with my backside, if you know what I mean, other than that great. Got staples out the next Thursday, went back to work Friday, GOD BLESS BROOKWOOD. |

I was extremely satisfied with my stay there. Everyone I came in contact with was very kind and supportive. I didn't get to stay on the "regular" by-pass surgery floor, but the nurses and aides on my floor were very helpful and knowledgeble. I would recomend this hospital. |

Brookwood has a wing dedicated to the care of bariatric patients. The staff is well trained in caring for large people and have a wonderfully support attitude. I received excellent care there. |

I had great care while I was in SICU during my first 24 hours. I recieved great treatment from the nurses in the unit and they were very encouraging in getting me up to walk and was there beside me in case something happened. I received very prompt medications when I needed them for pain and other discomforts.
Going to the x-ray dept was a good trip and was glad to get out and received great care during my trip down and back.
When I was moved out the floor, I was given a very good orientation about my drinking limits and also the pleasure of getting a suger free popiscle. That was a dream come true. Then my nurtrionist came by and we talked a lot about my food requirements and setting dates to be able to move up in each food category. |

| I work there and knew the anesthesia personal there. It also allowed me to not have to pay a co-pay. That being said, I have all of my medical procedures done there and have been very please with the care I have recieved each and every time. |

Just about everything about this stay was great. The radiologist who did my upper GI was not too personable. The staff was all wonderful and I felt they did everything they could to attend to anything I needed. |

I was very pleased with the care I recieved at Brookwood. The nurses and staff were wonderful! The only complaint I had with the nurses was that the Radiology Dept.needed to be notified sooner to do my leak test. I had my surgery at 10 A.M. on Wednesday and was allowed nothing to drink (since midnight the night before) until the leak test was to be done 2 days later. I was told it would be done first thing on Friday morning around 7-8 A.M. It was in the afternoon before the test was done and I was very uncomfortable because of the thirst.The man in the Radiology Dept. felt bad about it and apoligized but explained he had just recieved the orders 30 minutes earlier. This was my only complaint and it was probably just over-looked to send my orders down first thing that morning but the nurses in the future might want to try and get the orders down to Radiology early so the bariatric patients can have something to drink as soon as possible. |

The nurses and techs on 2north are the best people you could ever have taking care of you. I felt like they didn't just treat me they cared for my family as well. They were kind and sensitive to my family's needs as well as my own. That made it so much easier for me to focus on healing. |

2 nd floor where wls patients are put is unbeliveable ,they are so nice and very good nurses ,they care about you and your family and work hard to make sure you are as comfortable as possible. they talk with you and work with you about how to care for yourself when you go home and they are so incouraging. |

| My surgeon proforms the gastric bypass in two hospitals, one in Birmingham and the other in Alabaster. I chose Brookwood because it was easier to find. |

This is the best hospital I've ever been in. I had three children in the local hospital and it was nothing like this stay. One nurse talked about how it was important to her that patients be treated well because we chose that hospital to have our surgery and we had a choice. She wanted us to feel we made the right choice. And I feel I did. |

The nurses are phenomenal. They came in to offer assistance before I had the chance to ask for it. If they thought I might be in pain, they were offering medication. They brought my husband coffee and if they brought me a popsicle, they brought him one. One nurse had us thoroughly spoiled, but they all were really wonderful and I would recommend this hospital to anyone who needed surgery of any type. It was a wonderful stay, even the bed was comfortable. The nurse who escorted me out saw a friend of hers that also works at the hospital, and took me over to meet the friend, who was just darling. The nurse gave me a big hug when I got ready to go and just made me feel she really cares about her patient. |

I feel the hospital met my needs in every way. I was told in the beginning that most bariatrics pt are given a private room, but there are circumstances which allowed us to get a semi private. In my case i was in semi private with another bariatric patient.(which they say they will never put you in a room with someone different from your type surgery) I didn't have a problem with it at all because my roommate was anincentive to me to do the things I needed to do. the staff was upfront and honest, you have to respect them for that. |

SHE WAS UNATTENTIVE AND RUDE . ON MY LAST DAY, SHE CAME TO TAKE MY IV OUT . SHE HAD NO ALCOHOL ,GAUZE OR ANYTHING. SHE RIPPED THE TEGADERM OFF MY HAND AND SLAPPED A BANDAID OVER THE IV AND JERKS IT OUT, BLOOD GOES EVERYWHERE, SHE GRABS MY IV HAND AND PULLS ME INTO THE BATHROOM WHICH WAS FLOODED AND STICKS MY HAND UNDER THE WATER. I was very pleased with the overall care I got at Brookwood. From the pre-op to post op it was very simple. The only comment I would make is about the day shift of nursing. Very nice people, but very over worked. I had been told to ask for pain medication before it got bad. A good thing since it normally could take an hour to get a response. The night crew was great. I would highly recommend this to hospital to anyone. |

If I hadn't had my mom there with me the entire time, I don't feel like I would have been aroused to walk, eat or drink at all. With the exception of Ellen, the bariactric coordinator, I was never encouraged to walk or eat or drink over the 4 days I was there. My heart monitor came off in several places several times, which would have caused the frequency to flat line on the screen where it was suppossed to be being watched, but no one ever checked on it or came to find out if I was breathing or if my heart was beating--that was a little scary.My mom is a nurse, so we would reattach it and let someone know we needed new pads and that was it.When I had to stay an extra night for them to monitor temperature and treat me accordingly, I went from 3:00 Pm to 12:00 am before a nurse or nursing assistant even entered my room (despite us calling them) and that was because my mother chose to walk to the nurses station and inform them why I was there and what they needed to be doing. A couple of nurses didn't read my chart or go over doctor's orders, they would enter my room and take an inventory of what was going on base on what they could see-for example-"Let's see, you have a telemetry monitor, hmm, are you still hooked up to this I. V. because it looks dry-do you know if you're suppossed to get any more antibiotics through it?, your on oxygen, how much longer did the doctor want you on that?) I thought this was absurd!!! I shouldn't be the one filling her in.
When the doctors came around, they were wonderful-I don't have a complaint at all as far as the frequency or the bed side manner of any of the 3 of them. The hospital staff, however, left something to be desired. |

I had excellent care in the SICU the 2 days I was there. Very caring staff. When I was moved to the regular room I had two instances of being unable to get a nurse to provide pain meds or to change my IV bag which was empty. The nursing staff in surgery were excellent. Most of the ones on the floor were not very good. Some would walk in to your room and not say a word. There were several times I would look over on my table and there would be a bowl of jello- I had no idea it had been brought to the room. The head nurse had told me that the response time after you rang the nurse button should be 10 min. One time I waited 30 minutes. I finaly had to get up and walk to the nursed station. The RN said- "oh I guess I did not get my page."
There were times I would go several hours before ever seeing anyone. This was ok sometimes- because I got to rest. I did wonder though, if I fell going to the restroom, how long I would lay on the floor until someone came in my room. I did ok with the service-because I was able to do for myself- but if you are one who needs alot of help you will need someone to stay with you. My sister who is an RN was appalled at the nursing service. She thought it was terrible!!! |

They have just added a bariatric unit there and they are really trying to make it the best in Birmingham. They are very concern and very organized. Ellen the had of Bariatrics comes to see you before you have surgery (and the week before you meet her and have tour of the unit you will be staying on) Ellen also is there everyday while you are in the hospital to make sure you have your pain medication, taking the test you need to take, someone to help you get up and walk around and she is there just to make sure you are as comfortable as you need to be. I have only great things to say about Brookwood. If you are looking for a place to go and have this procedure this is the place to go in Birmingham. |
