How Selected: I chose Carolina's because Dr. Anderson's office is located in hospital. Felt that if there were any problems, he would be right there and not have to travel across town.
Competitors: Have none to compare to.
Comments: I felt that I received excellent care. All the nurses (but 1) seemed to really care how I was doing and if I needed anything. The only thing that upset me was just how noisy it was in ICU. It seemed as if the nurses were having a party all night, but if I needed them, they were right there.

Comments: Carolinas Hospital is full of competent, caring, hard-working people and for the most part the experience is good. I've been in there with my wife as well as for my own surgery so we're pros by now :-) They are way understaffed it seems and it takes forever to get a nurse to attend to you at times. Once my wife had to wait over 2 hours to get her pain medication which is totally unacceptable. For me, waiting 30 minutes to get more pain medication or change IV fluids was common. Often when nurses were in the room attending to me they got a phone call and had to run to take care of something else. I think this also contributes to them disturbing you too much. One night I had people come in every hour to empty trash, check temp, check bp, etc., and that could've been coordinated much better. I understand they need to regularly check patients, but that is ridiculous.

How Selected: I chose Carolinas because I knew they had more experience with bariatric patients, with specialized equipment and trained staff.
Competitors: I was extremely pleased. My stay there was made more pleasant by the positive staff and cheerful demeanor of every person I came in contact with. I have stayed in other hospitals that seem to consider you a "patient". I found that Carolinas considered me a "person", as well as a patient.
Comments: Carolinas is a new hospital in Florence. They have a very accomodating staff, and the physical layout is conducive to finding areas with ease. It is extremely clean, the staff is pleasant and well-trained, and they have a personal touch with each and every patient. I would certainly go there again, with pleasure.

How Selected: This is the hospital my surgeon is aff. with and also they are network with my insurance company..
Competitors: Excellent
Comments: For the most part, everyone was very polite and helpful...And as with every hospital these days, they need to have a larger nurse to patient ratio but i was lucky because my sister had the surgery about two months before me and she is a nurse so she took care of me mostly..

How Selected: I work for the company that owns this hospital and per an insurance change at the beginning of 2004, I can only go to a company owned hospital for my surgery. I live in Fort Wayne, IN and none of the company owned hospitals in this state do bariatric and Florence, SC was the closest for me to go to. By the way, the companys name is Triad Hospitals.

How Selected: It was recommended by our PCP.
Comments: Most staff was very helpful and caring, but some seemed like they didn't care much and came across as very grumpy. After calling for a nurse we frequently had to wait around 30 minutes, and the longest we had to wait was 2 hours. That is not acceptable when you're just a day out of surgery.

How Selected: It's reputation of being a great hospital.
Competitors: It was just as good as McLeod. I have been admitted to McLeod four times and Carolina twice. They are both great.
Comments: I am just glad my husband was there. There are just to many patients and not enough nurses. He helped me with everything so that gave them a chance to help others. I just personally hate to bother them. Nothing personal towards them. All of the nurses I had were the BEST!! They did all they could to make and keep me comfortable. I have even gone back to see some of them. After 38 days you tend to get to know them.

How Selected: I heard it was the only hospital in the area that actually had an entire unit and staff dedicated to gastric bypass patients.
Competitors: Nurses were more knowledgeable of needs of gastric patients as well as more cooperative and nice.
Comments: This is THE hospital to go to in the Florence area if you are having this surgery. The pre-op care was very efficient and organized and the post-op care included very caring nurses who are extremely willing to make you comfortable and healthy.

How Selected: It became the preferred provider when my company switched insurance carriers January 1
Competitors: I never had a bad experience with the other hospital but felt more confident with this one for some reason.
Comments: The only complaint that I have about this hospital was the night shift. They are definately not as professional as the day time staff. There was one nurse in particular that came in wearing these tight fitting capri pants with a low cut shirt, nails an inch long and her perfume was rather annoying. Her care was fine but I feel that her attire was unappropiate and distasteful.

How Selected: I CHANGED TO CAROLINA HOSPITAL BECAUSE DR.BALDER'S AND MY PCP OFFICES ARE THERE.
Competitors: BOTH HOSPITALS ARE GOOD.
Comments: THE PRE-OP TESTING WAS A HEARTWARMING EXPERIENCE FOR ME. THE STAFF ARE SENSITIVE, INFORMATIVE AND EXTREMELY SUPPORTIVE OF WLS.

How Selected: I was a self pay patient and they gave me the best rate for my hospital stay.
Competitors: I must say that Carolinas went out of their way to accomodate me financially. But Mcleod would not even negotiate a lower price. There was an almost $30,000 difference in the price.
Comments: I must say that Carolinas was a very clean and friendly hospital. Most of the nurses were excellent.

How Selected: I've had wonderful, professional care at Carolina's in the past.
Competitors: I like Carolina's much more that McLeod's. The staff at Carolina's are great and I have always been treated like I were the only patient in the hospital. Also, Carolina's is spotless and I am a clean freak.
Comments: I had the best care during my surgery. The staff (SICU - nurses Debra and Jim, knew everything about my WLS and diet as well as what I needed to have a safe recovery. They could not have been any better. The Floor nurses were just as good even they had alot of patients. They were very concerned about seeing that I got everything I needed. I felt like a Queen at Carolina's and would not have surgery anywhere else.

How Selected: My insurance covered Carolina's and McLeod, but since my surgeon's office is in Carolina's (and I had heard they were better), I opted for them.
Competitors: EVERYONE was extremely friendly and helpful, unlike the other hospitals I have been to in my area. I felt completely comfortable there.
Comments: I only wish Carolina's was closer to my home so if need be, the rest of my family could be treated there. I would definitely recommend this hospital.

Comments: I have to comment about the financial part....I received a call just after I returned home about the bill. They gave me a 20% discount and have put me on a payment plan for the remainder (8K) of ONLY $59 a month!!!!!....I only wish Carolina's was closer to my home so if need be, the rest of my family could be treated there. I would definitely recommend this hospital.

How Selected: Dr. office is in complex.
Comments: Very good staff. Had no problems with the hospital or there staff. Clean, effecient, modern equip.. The only problem was my wife stayed with me during my stay and the cots were really uncomfortable for her. She finally slept in the recliner and my bed when I was up. Overall a very good hospital experience.

How Selected: This is the Hospital that the surgeon,Dr. Balder normally uses. It is a very nice modern hospital with allot of friendly people.
Competitors: This hospital was far superior to any other hopital experience I had had in the past. The staff was the most important part, the floor nurses really cared about you, and it was not a "put-on" Also the facility was very nicely designed and cheerful. The hospital did allot to accommidate large patients, including oversize gown, larger wheelchair, etc.
Comments: If I had to be hospitalized or have surgery at any time in the future, I would go back to Carolina in a heartbeat. The people are great, the facility is great. The system really works in recovery.
