How Selected: CMC has the reputation of being the best so it was a no brainer.
Competitors: This hospital is hands down the best in the area. It has more doctors and specialist readily available than any other hospital locally and they have access to the most up to date/state of the art equipment.
Comments: This hospital's standards are the best of the best.

How Selected: This hospital was chosen by the surgeon.
Competitors: From what I have heard there are other hospitals in the area that are better equiped to handle weight loss surgery patients. I hope to find out soon when I have a revision at NE Medical Center.
Comments: Since this hospital does not have a formal bariatric program supporting weight loss surgery, the staff and equipment are not "patient friendly" towards obese people. The nursing and radiology depts had several people in them that were extremely rude and made comments under their breath about my weight. It was hard to get anyone to come into my room to help me if I paged from the bathroom. I had the open RNY and needed help post-op cleaning after BMs and was met with hostility when I asked the nursing staff for help. When I was back in the same hospital 2 yrs later and quite a bit smaller I was treated very differently, much better. It was very evident that there was a discrimination or bad attitude towards obese patients.

How Selected: Through my surgeon, Dr. Timothy Kuwada at CMC Surgical
Comments: The only complaint that I have was when receiving meals post-op, they could not seem to remember that I just had WLS, so I would receive food and beverages that I was not able to tolerate at that time. Despite many failed attempts at explaining that I needed to consume a liquid diet only, my stay was pleasant.

How Selected: At the time I first went to this hospital it was because it was near my work and I was having chest pain. Everyone and I mean EVERYONE I encountered was excellent. I am a hard stick for bloodwork and you can not blame staff..though some are better than others...when you do not have good veins.
Competitors: They are the tops. My daughter had her son at Presby and though her care was good, it lacked the personal touch and her room was like a CLOSET!!!
Comments: This hospital and their Pineville one are both EXCELLENT. MY sister recently had surgery at the Pineville center and her care was also excellent.

How Selected: My insurance
Competitors: Couldn't wait to leave. I felt my life was in danger with the poor nursing care I recieved. And I am a nurse.
Comments: The overall hospital I admire because I work for them and I support the system. It is a great hospital. However, the nursing care I recieved from the 5th floor nurses was appauling. From rudeness, to telling me they did not have time, when I requested my MD be called due to pain, to actually having the nurse manager administer pain meds the wrong route, causing an overdose and needing to recieve Narcan...it gets worse. I should have reported them to the nursing board and still might just do it. It was the worst nursing care that I could have ever imagined.

Comments: I am overwhelmed with the excellent care from the hospital staff of Carolina Medical Center. It will be my hospital of choice for future healthcare needs.

How Selected: They were the preferred provider under my health insurance.
Competitors: I have no personal in-patient experience with any other hospitals in my area.
Comments: Privacy was excellent, and my husband was able to stay with me the entire time. The recliner he had to sleep in, though, was very uncomfortable but at least he could be with me 24/7. Eating at the hospital for him was a bit expensive; it would be nice if they would allow a discount for family members of patients staying there. The nursing staff was great although, like at most hospitals, definitely overworked. The evening after my surgery, my husband and I had to push the nurse for me to get out of bed and walk a bit (she said there was nothing in her orders about it, but she did finally give-in and help me out of bed). I had to wait for meds and/or assistance on several occasions, even had to "ring" twice a couple of times. The worst part of my experience was for my second swallow test: I was taken down to radiology on a gurney and had to wait an hour and a half in the hall before they finally took me into the room for the test. I was on IV fluids and had to wait for so long that I had to get the nursing assistant to help me down off the gurney so I could go to the bathroom!! Overall, though, the experience was a fairly good one and I would go back to CMC without hesitation if I needed to.

How Selected: My husband works there so the co-pay was going to be only $200 instead of $300.
Competitors: This was my first stay at a hospital in my life, so I have nothing to compare it to.
Comments: I was given a private room due to the fact that I have severe sleep apnea and they needed to monitor me. The room was comfortable and the staff, for the most part, was helpful and on top of things. There were a few exceptions, but that's par for the course.
