One thing that we loved is that surgery kept my family very informed throughout my surgery, They called when I went in to say that they got started, called at least twice during the surgery to give updates, called when I got out of surgery plus my Dr came out to see them.
We also liked that there is a hotel in the hospital that you can stay in the night before for 1/2 price. My family continued to stay, which made it very easy for them and much more confortable than trying to stay in the room with me. |

Even though the building is old, everything is as clean as you could ask for. Dr. DeWitt even has a bath just for his patients! Designed for obese people. That was the most thoughtful thing I could think of. |

Some of the facilities seemed a bit dated. In some areas more attention was needed withregard to maintenance. The hospital bed I had was little more than a torture device. It was in need of immediate replacement. My doctor checked it out and instructed that it be replaced. However, it wasn't replaced before I was discharged. I did most of my sleeping in the chair in my room. |

Overall, my experience was a good one. I had an issue with my bed. Other than that I think one of the nurses in the ICU was very unproffessional. During her shift I found her to be rude and distracted. She spent much of her shift on the phone arguing with her daughter. Her volume was such that even though my bed was across the hall from her station I could hear her conversation clearly. However, all of the other staff were very good. |

Excellent hospital, some nurses were ok and some were fantastic, all the Doctors were perfessional, kind, and friendly. |

This hospital was very nice. 99% of the workers were very friends, seemed very knowledgeable. You always have them coming in every couple of hours, but that's their job. I would recommend this hopsital to everyone! |

My stay was ok. Most of the staff was attentive. The hospital was clean & everything seemed to work properly. I had a particularly good ecperience with Nurse Nancy. She was wonderful & encouraging. |

It is not as updated & the staff is not very friendly....except for a few who were good. |

The beds are small....even on the floor that they keep obese people after surgery. Like I said, the hospital is not as updated. Clean facilities & overall okay. But, not my first pick. |

I couldn't say enough about my stay at Carraway. They did an awesome job. They were caring and encouraging. Terri, and Paula in PCU were terrific. All in all things went very smoothly. Great staff. |

I have not been in any other hospitals. However, my sister (who is a nurse) was very impressed with the cleanliness of the hospital compared to others she had worked in. |

Excellent! Several of the nurses in the unit had taken special courses on bariatric surgery, and were very helpful. All rooms are private, so my sister was able to spend both nights in my room on a chair that folded out to a bed. The entire program is excellent from pre to post op, including a pre-op "info day" with presentations on what to expect, nutrition, and respiratory therapy. At all times I felt like the staff I was working with cared about me as a person rather than just a patient. |

I have never stayed at any other hospitals locally, but I think that this hospital was just as good as any other. Some people would probably say others around Birmingham are better, but I feel that is just because they are newer. |

The nurses on 7th floor were wonderful!! I think they were very nice, cooperative and willing to meet my needs. I had to ask for pain meds, but that is what we were told to do, and as soon as I asked, they would bring it straight away. They checked on me several times, especially when I didn't call them for anything, so that was really nice, but I was OK for most of the time. Overall I think this was a great stay!! |

Generally, a good hospital with good staff, great cafeteria food (says my wife). The waiting room experiences, according to my wife; Surgery waiting room seating uncomfortable for people of a little larger size. Notification of surgery progress/status excellent. ICU waiting room seating uncomfortable for people of a little larger size. |

I felt that the staff went over and beyond their call of duty. |
| Comments: |
I went in for surgery on June 9, 2004. I was a later going in surgery than expected. After in the OR & sedated there was complicatioons with my breathing. I started wheezing really bad, had a asthma attack (never had that happen before) o2 sat dropped really low. The surgery was called off until they could figure out what was going on. They started ordering test then. They did not stop until they could come up with an explanition. ICU staff was wonderful. One Paticular nurse named Lori was absolutley wonderful!!! My husband was there with our 8 yr old (special) daughter and the staff made arrangements for them to come in before or after visiting hours, so they could be with me. I just could have not ask for any better treatment anywhere. |

this is a wonderful WLS program they give you and your family all the info you need and then some and also have a wonderful aftercare program i would reccomend this establishment to anyone thinking of weight loss surgery |

I have worked at several and been in all the hospitals in the Birmingham area. CMMC is an older hospital, but ALL was up-to-date. All areas were clean, that I remember seeing!!! |

Pleasant surgical experience. Nursing staff was there when needed but did not hover. My requests were answered in a timely manner. No problems. |

I am personally a RN at St. Vincent's and there is absolutely NO comparison between the two. It's a shame we don't do WLS yet. Although I love my surgeon, I could NEVER recommend that anyone go to Carraway Methodist for anything at all. Horrible experience, Poor nursing care. BAD BAD BAD! |

I had to spend my first post-op night in the ICU related to Sleep Apnea. The ICU nurses were absolutely horrible. They were unreasonably loud at the desk so sleeping was very difficult. They acted as if I was a huge bother when I asked for pain medication and I actually heard them talking about me at the desk! Pathetic! I went through two shifts of nurses with a bedside commode that was about three sizes too small for me. I couldn't even urinate on it. I went to the bathroom in the hall and was told that I was not allowed to use that bathroom. I AGAIN expressed my concerns about the bedside commode that I was given and was finally brought a commode that was big enough. It was mortifying. When I went to the main bariatric area I was not even assessed by my day shift RN on both days I was there. NOT ONCE! It's a good thing I kind of have a clue about what is going on. I did appreciate the quiet on the bariatric floor and that my family could stay with me. The ICU has VERY limited visiting times and it is extremely frustrating to not be able to have your family with you during such a difficult time. This frustration was compounded by poor nursing care. This hospital provides such sub-standard care that I pray they either do something about it or stop providing services to bariatric clients. |

We both were pleased with our stays, however the pre-op blood work I had 2 weeks before surgery really left me brused. I looked like I had been hit by a baseball. The nurses in the actual hospital I had no problems with in taking blood several times. No bruses at all and I always have trouble having blood taken. |

I was anxious to come right home and let everyone know how wonderful my stay at Carraway was.
Some of the reviews here had me a little worried, but they're a couple of years old. I’m sure Debbie Estep has had a hand in the improvements. She is a real asset to Carraway’s bariatric program.
The staff was friendly and helpful. Every employee we met in the halls (and boy, did I walk those halls!!) would smile and say hello. When my husband and I first went in to check in, we weren’t sure which way to go, and a nice young man in scrubs asked if we needed help finding anything. I told him where I needed to be and he pointed us in the right direction and told us to have a good day. I was impressed for someone to stop and take their time to help us. Imagine my surprise, when that same sweet faced open the curtain when I was in Pre-op and introduced himself as my anesthesiologist!
The furnishings were very nice. There was a comfortable glider which helped me to “keep moving,” and sit upright. Another chair converted into a “cot” that my husband slept in – a lot more sturdy than a roll-away would have been. We also had two other chairs making it very adequate for additional visitors.
A note about cleanliness: I kept the same white socks on from Monday until Wednesday. I did my WALKS in the halls in my sock feet. Can you imagine what the bottom of my socks looked like after three days of walking hospital corridors? NO, you can't. My socks were as white as when I put them on Monday morning!! Unbelievable for any public area!!

I cannot imagine anyone staying there without a family member. Because, you literally had to ask for anything that you needed. They seemed a bit understaffed with nurses. However, all of my nurses (except one) were fantastic.
I told my doctor about the one nurse that was not up to standard and by that evening the head of nursing had called me to address the problem. I was very impressed with this. (By the way, the problem was taking 1 1/2 hours to get pain medicine! Another patient that I met had the same problem but it was only with one nurse all of the others were great!) |

The staff was very nice and heplful to my my family members who stayed with me all of my time there. They allowed my daughter to use the family room to keep her food in their refrigerator and use the microwave. They were quick to respond to my needs and make sure we were all provided for . |
