How Selected: From other WLS candidates and it's very close to home.
Competitors: It's a little more friendly than the other hospital I've been in and allows a much longer quiet time inbetween vitals.
Comments: I was very impressed with the care I recieved at this hospital after the horror stories I have heard over the years. I was given expert care and attention.

Competitors: CMC has had a stigma for many years. Even when I was a child, everyone would say.."NEVER GO THERE"...I grew up never going there, only as a young adult. Most of my experiences have been terrible, but I keep going back. My surgeron was amazing. The hospital has this stigma which unfortunately its continually living up to...It's unfortunate really.
Comments: Little to no education with diabetic patients. Some nursing staff insensative to biatric patients. There are some amazing women on the nursing staff, but overall.....I never have felt so uncomfortable during a stay in a hospital as I have here.

How Selected: I chose Cayuga Medical Center as this was where my surgeon, Dr. John Mecenas, practices.
Competitors: This hospital was just awesome. I would compare it to 4 other hospitals that I am familiar with, and it would shine far above the all of them! 3 in Syr, and one in Cortland,NY.
Comments: My stay from beginning to the end was great. The admitting staff were wonderful and got me in right away. My husband was able to stay with me until my surgery. The nurses were AWESOME! There were no complications with my surgery or my anestetia. Dr. John Mecenas did a great job. Recovery room, well I remember nothing about it! I guess I had some pain and nausia, but it was taken care of. I did not throw up. My one night in ICU was perfect. Everyone was terrific. I spent 2 days on the regular floor, sorry I don't recall which one! However, I do remember that I was treated with the best care and dignity that I could imagine. Everyone of the nurses were terrific. If ever I need to go to the hospital for surgery again, I hope it is at Cayuga Medical Center.

How Selected: This is the hospital my surgeon works with.
Competitors: It's better then Geneva:)
Comments: most of my stay and care was great, I however did not like being left in a hall way for over an hour, and being told they forgot I was out there. The night in ICU was Great the nurses there are on the ball. When i was moved to my semi-private room i was left without a call light and had to ask the lady in there to ring her bell so i could get some help. After being forgotten in the hall i was moved to the peds unit which was okay and I had great nurses there and a private room. over all I would stay there again if needed:)

How Selected: My surgeon is affiliated with this hosp.
Comments: This hospital was fine with the day to day care of a patient. My MD was very attentive and addressed things immediately. I was put in a room with a room-mate who had constant visitors and calls. Her whole family came and ate T-giving dinner while I sat sipping broth. She was up all night--which caused me to be up all night. When I asked my nurse @ 2:30am if there was anything that could be done she told me to have my husband bring in ear plugs. I'm sure this doesn't happen to eveyone who is admitted there.

How Selected: My surgeon(Dr. Mecenas) is on staff. Also I had prior surgeries there since 1986 and have always received excellent care. It has improved each time I have been a patient over the past 17 years.
Competitors: I have been a patient at two other area hospitals and in my opinion Cayuga Medical was the top-rated of the three.
Comments: Although the area of gastric bypass surgery is new over the past 12 months at this hospital, in my opinion they did excellent research in techniques to offer, have competent staffing and have educated supporting staff well in preparation for offering this option to the morbidly obese population. I believe they will continue to expand and improve their services to the community and surrounding area.
