About this Hospital

The Center for Weight Loss Surgery at world-renowned Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is recognized as a premier provider and developer of quality weight loss surgery.  The center is committed to providing the most advanced techniques to its patients.  Cedars-Sinai was one of only 17 medical centers nationwide chosen to be part of the early investigational trials of the LapBand® system.  Further studies have included trials in additional gastric banding procedures as well as gastric pacing procedures for weight loss management.

The Center for Weight Loss Surgery is a unique program that addresses the complete range of problems related to obesity.   It is staffed by caring, highly skilled surgeons and allied health professionals who are dedicated to delivering only the most advanced procedures and techniques. In addition to treating adults, Cedars-Sinai is one of the few facilities able to safely offer surgery to adolescents struggling with obesity. The center’s multidisciplinary team consists of:

  • Board-certified surgeons who specialize in both weight loss and laparoscopic surgery
  • Registered nurses
  • Registered dieticians
  • Licensed clinical social workers
Surgical Procedures

The Center for Weight Loss Surgery at Cedars-Sinai offers two minimally invasive procedures for weight loss surgery: Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LapBand®) surgery and laparoscopic Roux-en-Y (pronounced ROO-en-why) gastric bypass surgery. Laparoscopic surgery involves the use of a laparoscope, an instrument with a miniature camera attached, which allows the surgeon to “see” inside the body. This technique involves only a few small incisions and results in fewer risks, quicker recovery and less scarring.

The laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding procedure is a purely restrictive surgical procedure in which a band is placed around the uppermost part of the stomach. This band divides the stomach into two portions, one small and one larger portion. Since the stomach is divided into smaller parts, most patients feel full faster. As the name indicates, the band is adjustable.  If the rate of weight loss is not acceptable, the band can be made tighter. Food digestion occurs  through normal digestion.

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery is both a restrictive and malabsorptive procedure. According to two organizations, the American Society for Bariatric Surgeons and the National Institutes of Health, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery is the most popular bariatric surgery in the United States. In this procedure, the surgeon creates a small stomach pouch and then constructs a bypass for food. The bypass allows food to skip parts of the small intestine. By skipping a large part of the small intestine, the body cannot absorb as many calories or nutrients.

Each of these procedures provides excellent durable weight loss and reduction in obesity-related illness in appropriately chosen patients.

Patient Care

To ensure the most successful outcomes, the center offers a multidisciplinary plan of care.  The patient’s journey begins with a comprehensive informational session, followed by surgical, medical, dietary and behavioral health consultations. Once a patient is considered an appropriate candidate by the multidisciplinary team, surgery is performed. Following surgery, patients continue to have access to the center’s staff and expertise through follow-up appointments and support groups. Two distinct support groups are available for patients and family members. The first focuses on patients’ concerns prior to surgery and up to one year following surgery, while the second focuses on topics generally of concern to patients whose surgery was more than a year prior.   To offer patients further reassurance, the physicians at Cedars-Sinai remain available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for support and to serve as an information resource.

Throughout the period of care, the center’s experienced team works with the patient’s referring physician to determine the best course of treatment and to keep him or her appraised of the patient’s condition.

How Selected: I didn't have a choice. I am a member of the Cedar-Sinai Medical Group so Cedar-Sinai Medical Center is automatically where surgery would be performed.
Competitors: Cedar-Sinai is the best! This was my first surgery and first time ever staying overnight in a hospital. The nurses were very nice and helpful. My nurse even sung to me sometimes. I kinda miss being in the hospital.
Comments: I had a deluxe single room which was bigger than my apartment and it looked like a 5-star hotel room with a beautiful view. I could have had a party in that room. I did get lucky. Not all of the rooms are that big. I did have to wait 2 hours to get a room after getting out of recovery, but it was worth the wait. They give you practically everything you need: toothbrush, toothepaste, mouthwash, lotion, powder, soap, slippers, nice towels and face clothes. There was even a fancy shower in the room.

How Selected: It was selected by my medical group. I would of selected a hospital much closer to my home, Not 3 hours away!
Competitors: This hospital is known world wide and considered to be top notch! If all I could base my opinion on was the bariatric unit it would be great! I have to rate this hospital better than other hospitals I've been in.
Comments: Cedar Sinai has a great bariatric program and I was treated like a king. The room was great, the staff was very friendly and helpful in the bariatric unit. I was very satisfied with all that happened in the bariatric unit except... except... I WAS NOT GIVEN MY DAILY MEDICATIONS AND THAT RESULTED IN AN UNEXPECTED EXTRA DAY IN THE CARDIAC UNIT. This unit is good too, although I felt the nursing staff was a little on the grumpy side and didn't really want to help me get through this. I also think it is riduculous that "PATIENTS" have to pay for parking and at $14.00 per day. We bought a $30.00 week pass after finding out we would be staying longer. And then found out you have to park out in the "booney" parking lots. The parking lot attendant in the South Tower was NOT going to let us out with paying the required daily fee or a total of $32.00. We were told we were ok to park in the South tower. So better bring your checkbook and pay the piper!!! I hope I won't have to come here anytime in the near future. I hate LA and all the business and traffic and hustle and bustle. Just give me the laid back life of the Southern California Mountains.

How Selected: My doctor is on staff with the Dept. of Surgery at Cedars-Sinai, and has his office there.
Competitors: It is an EXCELLENT hospital, and in terms of quality of care, it EXCEEDS UCLA, and all other hospitals I've visited in Southern California.
Comments: The nursing staff and caregivers at Cedars are WONDERFUL! I was in a beautiful, big room in 8 SouthEast, and the staff there was so considerate, kind and caring. The nurses and assts. ALWAYS came at the shift change and introduced your new caregivers to you; the hospital FOCUSES on continuity of care and COMMUNICATION among the staff. The private rooms are BIG, beautiful, CLEANED 2X A DAY, (at first I thought I had been mistakenly placed in the 'celebrity wing', but the 8th floor is where most bariatric patients are sent!) and the atmosphere is quiet and peaceful, like an art gallery; in fact, the walls of all 8 floors are lined with beautiful art and prints, which makes walking around like a trip through to the local art museum! All my visitors were JEALOUS! The nurses and their assts. only cover 6 patients per shift, so I got plenty of attention. The only downside is the parking: very limited and LA CRAZY! My ride home spent 30 minutes trying to find a place to park at the South Tower. Parking is also expensive; the Beverly Center parking across the street on the east side may be a better bet for visitors. But make no mistake: this hospital is FANTASTIC! I hated to leave!

Comments: The pre-op/recovery room at Ceadars-Sinai,needs to be more organized, considering the amount of surgeries that are performed at this great hospital...ALL PATIENTS IN THAT ROOM SHOULD HAVE ARM TAGS(ID BANDS),THAT IDENTIFY THE PATIENTS,TO AVOID ANY CONFUSION..THIS IS AN INEXCUSIBLE MISTAKE,THAT COULD LEAD TO,''LIVE LOCAL AND LATE BREAKING NEWS'',TITLED''A PATIENT GOES FOR RNY AND INSTEAD HAS HIS PROSTATE REMOVED'',this issue should be addressed immediatly by hospital management...Other than this issue,in my opinion Ceadars-Sinai is one of the best hospitals out there...The service was top notch, once I was in my room..The nurses and all of the staff did an excellent job and I thank them from the bottom of my heart....

Comments: It was very nice, I had a nice, private room. I did feel like I was a bit of a bother when asking for pain medication, since I didn't have a pump and had to ask a nurse every time. There was one nurse who was a real bi&%h, she made me cry the morning after surgery at 8am by telling me all the other bariatric patients had been up twice walking already and I hadn't. I was in pain and could barely even get up with an attendants help to go to the bathroom a few hours earlier. *eyeroll* Parking can be a bit confusing, just pay attention to which lot you are going into. Some don't accept the hospitals validation and the main patient lot was full by 11am. Parking is cheaper at the Beverly Center right across the street. It's $1 for the first 3 hours, with a $8 daily max. It worked out much better for my visitors, one of whom paid $14 for less than 2 hours at Cedars after parking in the wrong lot.
