How Selected: Been an overnight patient there before and had a good experience.
Competitors: I rate this hospital well above the local hospital in my area. Christiana has many more services to offer and more specialty staff available in case of a life threatening emergency.
Comments: Every nurse, doctor and technician were extremely pleasant, regardless of shift. I had to call a nurse for a potty break every 1/2 hour to an hour (after catheter removal) and they were there almost immediately to help me out of bed. They coaxed me out of bed to do my walking even though I just wanted to sleep. They knew what was best for me to heal.

How Selected: I previously worked in the hospital and knew that it is very well equipped for emergencies. It was my first choice.
Competitors: I am not sure of other hospitals in the area. Christiana has always been my first choice. I am aware that the St. Francis hospital also has very good accommodations and a good staff. But my experience with Christiana in the past really helped make my decision simple
Comments: I was completely blown away by the care that I got at the hospital. I honestly didn’t expect that much checking up. I was told I would be getting a PCA pump that gave me continuous pain meds but I also had someone continuously checking my blood sugar and my pain level after the automatic machine was taken away. They had an entire unit for bariactric patients. There where larger gowns, bigger beds, wider wheelchairs, the works. I was overly happy with the care. Also there where people who came from every department that I saw preoperative to check on me postoperative. Kudos to Christiana Care.

How Selected: I live in Milford, DE but choose Christinia Hospital as I distrust the Hospital below the Canal (other Family Members had bad experiences down here). An Dr. Wynn came with excellent references per others who had the operation in my family.
Competitors: Great....Christinia is the best in Delaware. I don't mine the 83 mile drive to go there. In fact if I have any serious illness I'm to be driven or flown by helicopter to Christinia.
Comments: The only complaint I have is the beds where not at all comfortable for obese people, not enough pain meds (I don't think they realize a 400lb. person needs twice as much than a 200lb. person, and I think I should have stayed 4-5 days verses the 2.5 days I was in there. I spent 3-4 days in bad pain at home and went through 600ml of Tyenol 30 in 5 days because of the pain.

How Selected: It is where my doctor operates.
Competitors: I think it is a very good hospital.
Comments: I feel that the nurses are extememly over worked. They have too many patients per nurse. Therefore, you have to continually ask for things, such as unplugging your IV so that you can walk around, etc. I also had an extremely horrible stay due to my room mate. Through no fault of the other patient, they needed to have a room to themselves because of the level of care required.

How Selected: My surgeon, Dr. Irgau operates here.
Competitors: I think Christiana Hospital is one of the best hospitals that I have ever been to either as a patient or a visitor.
Comments: The nurses in 5D are the best. They were all kind and caring individuals. They gave lots of encouragement and were always available if I needed anything. The only thing, I didn't like about the hospital were the beds. The hospital bed was very uncomfortable. Maybe it is that way on purpose to encourage one to get up and walk the hallway. Walking is strongly encouraged after gastric bypass surgery.

Competitors: I only have one other hospital to compare to, and I would say that this one is far better, in all aspects.
Comments: I had very good nurses, everyone was very helpful. If there was anything to complain about it would be this size of the rooms. I thought it was difficult to get around with the iv pole and not get tangled up with the person in the other bed.

How Selected: It's the hospital the surgeons work out of and it's 5 mins from my home.
Competitors: Very efficient.
Comments: They have been putting the bariatric patients in one area (5D) and the nurses there were awesome! On the entire floor there was only 1 nurse who didn't belong there and when I've viisted other friends since, she seems to have worked on her attitude. Most of the nurses and assistance were 'johnny on the spot', if I needed them, they were there. Very helpful and accomodating.

How Selected: This is the closest hospital too me, the most conveinent. Location.
Competitors: I thought St. Francis was much more customer oriented and had better equipment.
Comments: After reading the other reviews I can't believe I was in the same hospital. Maybe it's because the floor I was on was 3 not 5. I spent a horrible 3 days because of the poorly designed bed, (I think it was meant for a much larger person), my iv carrierhad so many wires for all of the monitors and such. There should be a law about those beds. I don't remember being this uncomfortable at St. Francis last year during my knee surgery. I am not used to sleeping on my back, but that was the only position I could get my body into. I could have fit into one of the regular beds, not the green plastic, slippery monster. I have scratches on the backs of my legs from getting in and out of the bed. And the rooms at Christiana are not wide enough for beds and chairs. I guess some designer skimped on two feet to save money. This in effect has made the hospitals stay about as comfortable as a 5 hour plane ride in coach. I was cramped into a corner, my iv carriers constantly grabbed the other person's curtain or chairs as I walked past. It was very inconvient to do the necessary walking after surgery and to get to the bathroom on time. I litterally felt claustraphobic by the day they released me. Luckily I did my breathing exercises as stressed and my walking so I started healing very quickly and got out a day early. I slept almost one entire day when I got home becuase I was so exhausted. They should also give you something for dehydrated lips. Mine were were cracked and bleeding as if I had spent the day on a desert without water. I have no complaints about the staff or the doctors. They know there is a problem with space and equipment, but there wasn't much they could do to help me. At least at Union Hospital they give you an egg crate to top your mattress.

Comments: They were very much under-staffed. When I was in pain there were no nurses to assist for a long time because there were just not enough nurses in the unit. There was no one to help you out of bed or to help unplug your monitor so you could walk, you had to bend and do it all on your own or else you would be waiting for like an hour! Also their "blood drawing unit" was downsized and the nurses were not as trained to do the ivs and would go right through my veins. I was told this by one of the nurses. The nurses were very kind and helpful when they were around but they were severely understaffed.
