How Selected: By default since I had chosen to use Dr Raul Rosenthal and he is affiliated with Cleveland Clinic, howeverf, I had heard about it's reputation as an excellent hospital!
Competitors: All of my stays at Cleveland Clinic have been incredible. You are treated like a guest at a resort. The staff is very attentive. The hospital has larger wheelchairs, beds and surgical rooms.
Comments: The staff made sure my parents and son were ok. They made sure that they had a place to stay even offering to set up a bed for my mom in my room. They even have a discounted hotel rate at the nearby Amerisuite Hotel (also excellent attention to CCW patients/famliy) and they offered a shuttle to/from the hospital and nearby Sawgrass mills.

Competitors: I have not been in the hospital in nearly 20 years but the experience I had was exceptional. If I ever need to be in th hospital I would rather travel the 3 1/2 to 4 hrs it takes to get there than go to a facility around the corner. That is how much I trust them there.

Comments: The pre-surgery, recovery, and ICU staff were WONDERFUL. Most of the regular staff were OK, but they wouldn't just check on you and you had to call a number instead of pushing a button to get them when they had the phone out of reach. The night time staff the first night were HORRIBLE and I asked for a different nurse to be assigned to me. I saw the night time nurses ONCE per night if I was lucky and they would have the nurses assistants come in to give me shots in the belly for them. I had to ask to be helped to bathe and it only happened once because the second nurse said the aide should do that but she was nowhere to be found. The nurses were not that helpful in the regular area and I felt like I was a bother. I also had a problem with the food delivery... they kept bringing the wrong order... I would order beef broth and hot decaf tea and red jello and I would get chicken broth, crystal lite and orange jello... this happened THREE TIMES. I would also reorder and not get it or get it wrong in parts again. Very frustrating when you don't have the strength to fight. I just wouldn't eat the broth. They did have wonderful volunteers that brought around magazines and books to read as well as snacks (which my mother got since I can't) They were nicer and more helpful than some of the nurses. My main day nurse was a 3.5 on a scale of 5 and was considerably nicer the second day. I didn't feel like I was getting answers or being taken care of. I didn't get the same instructions, cups as the other bypass patients did who had a different nurse, but the same doctor and surgery as me. That inconsistency by the nurses made me very nervous.

How Selected: The doctor I chose was out of this hospital.
Competitors: I've not been in another hospital, so I don't have a comparison. The ICU nurse, Sharyn, was absolutely fantastic. However, once I got to a regular room, I asked to be removed from the morphine, because it was making me sick. After that, I had to wait twice for 2 hours each for pain medication. The nurses were not very responsive. The hospital itself was beautiful and each patient has their own room. That was another reason I stayed with the doctor I did, though I wasn't happy with him.

How Selected: Covered under Aetna PPO. But during the WLS siminar, Dr. R actually impressed by husband. That's saying something!
Competitors: Only ever saw Jupiter. I can only comment on the staff - they were very negative about insurance coverage. I think they've been burned too many times, but they're also not signed up with insurance companies, save one - so of course out-of-network problems will arrise.
Comments: The professional side is more helpful than the hospital side. Stay in ICU as long as you can, once you go upstairs to a room you no longer get the personal attention. My night nurse complained about having too many patients to take care of. One night the nursing asst. pulled my table with phone and call button too far away from my bed. I had touble getting in and out of bed, and the nurses would rush me because they were in a hurry. The anasticiologist (ms) chidded me for crying with the IV. "There are real sick people here, stop it" If you read my profile, you'll understand why I was upset. The surgery was excellent, perfect. The ICU staff was wonderful, even with the touble my veins gave them. Eric ended up with swollen tonsils and the ICU staff wouldn't let him go until a ENT doctor came to see him. So overall, be firm in your requests, don't take any crap from them and you'll be fine. It won't be perfect, but you will be fine.
