Comments: Cannot speak Highly enough of the hospital and baritric unit - they are the best! Worth the 7 hour one way drive to get there.

Competitors: About the same as any other.
Comments: I found the level of care while in-patient (from a nursing standpoint) to be adequate. I didn't really find anyone that sincerely went "above & beyond" to provide what I would consider "excellent/world class" care. This may be due to the volume of patients per nurse, staffing constraints, etc. I'm not sure but in hearing of the Cleveland Clinic, perhaps my expectations were much higher?

How Selected: I investigated the hospital, surgeon, and it was a hospital of excellance.
Competitors: Extemely efficient program, the wait time for surgeons appointments are outrageous. Hospital is 2 1/2 hours away but it accepted Medicare I that's my insurance.
Comments: I think this hospital is a very busy hospital but they are top knotch with the programs in all fields. I had a problem though, when I was taken to the recovery room I had no morphine pump. They gave me shots in recovery but when I got to my room they had only ordered me Tylenol, YIKES. They finally three hours later got a hold of the surgeon and got me hooked up to a morphine pump.

How Selected: Looking for hospitals and surgeons who accepted Medicare for the WLS, and this hospital and the bariatric surgeon I chose both accepted Medicare as payment.
Competitors: Top notch, although a very big hospital to get lost in if not for the helpers and signs directing me to where I needed to go. With all of the construction going on inside and outside, it's not easy getting around it.
Comments: Like a city inside a city...a very big hospital! Definitely have to do a lot of walking to get where you need to be. I found it to be very clean, bright, and all of the staff to be so very pleasant and helpful.

How Selected: Because I have medicaid/medicare I had to go to a center of excellence.
Competitors: They are a clean hospital, much more than others I have been to. But they are so much bigger and have so much going on, you become more of a number than a patient.
Comments: I wish I could say great things, but I can't. A lot of the staff had poor attitudes, I was ran into a wall right out of surgery, one of the orderly's complained that he had to push me up the ramp to even get me to surgery. Then the one nurse did not give me pain meds from 10 a to 7 p. She was rude to my friend that was there, and had stayed with me that day. She wouldnt even look at her or speak to her. She told me that it was my job to call for pain meds. Well, hello! I was in pain and that is why my friend was there for support. Then I ran a fever and called the after hours number. They asked me a series of questions and told me to take my pain meds. Then the next day my incision was leaking, and I called the after hours number because I was so scared and the told me not to call that number because it was not an emergency. But in our discharge papers that it was it tells us to do. At this point I wish I would have picked somewhere else to go. I am not happy at all.

How Selected: An RN friend recommended the Cleveland Clinic to me. I will allows be indebted to her for sending me to CC. It has been a wonderful experience.
Competitors: I had a near death experience at a local hospital, Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. This is partially why I went to CC. CC is totally into serving Morbidly Obese patients.
Comments: Everyone from the parking attendents, greeters, info people, staff, nurses and doctors all seem to be extremely proud to be a part of the Cleveland Clinic team. And they are all well trained about being good service providers.

How Selected: A provider in my husband's health insurnace network, also through reputation.
Competitors: I think that the Clinic is much more "on the ball" than some of the other bariatric programs I investigated in other local hospitals. Being a Center for Excellence in Bariatric sugery does not necessarily make a hospital good for patient experience. It takes people who care about people, are sympathetic to the needs of obese people and want to do something to help.
Comments: There were only a few hiccups on my stay at the Clinic. A few of the employes tended to be a little loud in the hallway, and some were having more fun having interaction with each other than being helpful to me. There were no chairs in my hospital room for my family to sit and visit and my son was reprimanded by the nurse for sitting on my bed. Also, out of the four or so times we've visited the BMI center for various reasons, we've been kept waiting every time. Even my surgery was at least two and a half hours delayed. My physicians visit for post-op follow-up was also delayed two hours because of a "snafu". It's not pleasant to just sit and wait and wait and wait although the staff did tell me why the doctors were late both times. Dr. Schauer's staff is very helpful and pleasant, but his assistant, Laura, can be abrupt and somewhat condescending.

How Selected: I selected this hospital 1st because of my insurance. 2nd, it is simply the best in our area and the bariatric program is phenomenal.
Competitors: The Cleveland Clinic is a well oiled machine. Lab, Xray, transport work quickly, efficiently, and sensitively to get your tests done. Just because of the sheer volume of patients that this major medical center has, things must be done quickly. The ancellary help the nurses have is phenomenal. I have worked at all the other hospitals in the area, and this is the best place to have this surgery.
Comments: Like I said, the Cleveland Clinic is a huge medical/teaching facility. I had some significant pain postop from an ileus. The Fellow was in 3-4 times a day to see me. The staff was attentive and sensitive. The pain I was having couldn't be medicated away with pain medication. I had to go down for tests, things were done quickly. Transporters and Radiology staff were very sensitive to my pain postop and worked with me. I would choose this hospital over any other again.
