How Selected: I wanted someplace close to home. I considered other more famous locations but didn't like the idea of long trips for emergencies or follow up appointments. Basically the hospital was selected by default when I selected the surgeon I wanted, who was close by. I also wanted a smaller community hospital compared to my other local choice:Albany med.
Competitors: It was ok. I lived. Being in the hospital is always unpleasant, especially in today's medical system. It was probably comparable to other community hospitals in less populated areas. I was there because I thought my surgeon was great and that was what mattered to me more.
Comments: Columbia is currently undergoing renovations, causing parking problems, mess, and an unpleasant atmosphere. The renovations are definitely long overdue, it is not a modern looking place. I had all my pre-op done through the hospital and affiliates, and while never modern and bright in appearance, the care was good for the most part. Hospital staff seem caring but suffer from bureacratic tangles and seem bumbling at times. The hospital room was cramped, noisy and uncomfortable. The nurses were very nice. Some of the PCA staff were very irritating. The staff were busy, but always responsive. If a family member went to the station or I rang the bell, someone consistently showed up immediately. They obviously had respect for my doctor and communicated with him and his patient orders were followed up on right away. I would do it the same way if I had to do it over again, because of my choice of surgeon, but for anything else I'd pick a more modern hospital.

How Selected: Through my surgeon
Competitors: About the same as any other
Comments: I would go there again if need arises.I felt the ICU nurses were fabulous and very encouraging. The pre-op nurses I can't say enough about. I was very scared and they went above and beyond to take my fears away and were very encouraging and non-judgmental about the type of surgery I was having.

How Selected: How did you select this hospital? I didn't, it chose me. My Doctor does his surgeries here.
Competitors: How did you select this hospital? A little worse.
Comments: Old/somewhat dirty/smelled horrible no matter how much I sprayed/first 4 days I was in the private "bariatric room", after that I was moved to a double room, with tiny, extremely uncomfortable beds, and my roomate was going through heroin withdrawl and they wouldn't move me even though there was several empty beds for the rest of my stay in other rooms/Emergency room does not communicate directly with the hospital, and they are very un-equipped to handle overweight patients.

How Selected: Closest one where my surgeion Dr. Pearlstein could operate, and it was very close to home for me.
Competitors: I've never stayed at other hospitals, but I was in the emergency room of others. I must say that Columbia Greene was fast and right on top of my pain, not like other hospitals who make you wait hours for pain medicine which dont work.
Comments: This hospital has the best icu possible. They were right on top of things and the people were friendly and great. On the fifth floor of the hospital is another story. The people are friendly as they can be but because they are alway in such a rush to help all the patients at once, and do thier rounds, you dont feel the friendliness as you do in the icu. But if you call them, they do come and they always make sure your not in pain.

Comments: The only complaint that I had was that the dietary staff has NO idea what a post-op RNY patient can eat. I was served ice cream, regular jello, regular soda - I sent them back - but it was uncomfortable to constantly be on the buzzer about the food
