How Selected: It is a high quality medical center which has an excellent reputation. I wouldn't go anywhere else.
Competitors: The hospitals in my area, namely Orange-Regional Medical Center and others nearby stink and I wouldn't send my dog to them. There is one hospital that has merged with Orange-Regional Medical Center named Arden Hill which we call Arden Kill. Their care is horrendous and staff is rude.
Comments: I would highly recommend this hospital to anyone but I would like to say that they need to address the tap water situation. Showers are not allowed nor is drinking out of the tap at all due to a "health hazard" of which I am unsure why. Other than that the nurses for the most part were nice other than the day nurse on my last day who was very rude and loud. The nursing assistant as well as rude but the other nurses were fine. The doctors and residents and house keeping and dietary staff were wonderful.

How Selected: After living in the community and knowing their reputation, I participated in a seminar and fell in love.
Competitors: I think they are in tune with our needs. I think they did a fine job taking care of me. I had 1 nurse to 2 patients.
Comments: Having 1 nurse to 2 patients plus a beautiful view of GWB and the Hudson River, sunrise and sunsets were the best way to start and end an evening. The only complaint I have is that nurses should not be allowed to wear perfumes. It can quickly become offensive.

How Selected: It ws the one my chosen surgeon was affiliated with. i had also worked there 20 years ago, and felt a big, teaching hospital was where I wanted to be.
Competitors: Much better than the smaller local hospital near my home.
Comments: Nurses (outside of the PACU) had too high a case load, could handle only problem centered requests, no patient teaching. They did respond quickly when lines were dry or I needed pain meds.

How Selected: This is the hospital my surgeon practices at.
Competitors: I had the best nursing and over all care at this hospital than any other I have been a patient at in the country.
Comments: My husband hired a private duty nurse for me since I was having so many problems post op. She was an angel from from God. I don't think I would have made it without her. The nursing care was excellent. The food was tolerable and they did everything to make accomidations. The medical staff was the best I every dealt with. They treated you with respect and dignity.

How Selected: I selected this hospital due to the physician I chose to do the surgery.(Dr. Marc Bessler)
Competitors: They were wonderful especially since they are a large academic hospital. I have only one other surgery(tonsils) at age four so I have no true comparison.
Comments: Parking although not free was convenient and they offered valet service. The hospital appeared clean and well run. Although they had larger hospital gowns, they still were not large enough to cover someone of my size(340 lbs. approx.). They had to drape another one over my back so the world would not see the opening. Also when I went for my pre op x ray, the gowns were too small and they had to hunt around for one for me. Other than that... the recovery room experience was wonderful and after that the step down unit that I was transferred too was great until the next morning when there was a changing over of the shifts. There were several other patients who had greater needs than I at that moment so I was a little bit ignored but people were close by when I called out. Pain control was great. I had my own PCA pump with morphine which was so helpful and I loved my Dr. who is Marc Bessler and the anestesiologist was great too.. had lots of questions and took me through the experience beforehand and gave me meds to prevent vomiting while in surg. the OR nurse was a male and he was also wonderful and there were 2 other residents there. At Columbia... you walk yourself into the OR which I never heard of but liked it. Gave me a sense of power and next thing I knew... there was a flurry of activity and boom the IV and I was out!!! You can trust this institution!!!

How Selected: I wanted a woman surgeon and this is who she is affliated with
Competitors: This is above many of the hospitals in New York City and the staff were very good
Comments: I only had one bad night where I felt that the nurse on duty was "too busy" and did not respond to me well. I got up to use the bathroom in the night and he had to unhook me from everything, but the second time I requested to use the bathroom he did not want to unhook me so I had to use a bedpan. I hated that, it would have been better to get up and walk, but he did not want to take off the leg compression boots, I realize they are busy at night (less staff), but I did expect more assistance. All the other shifts were great

How Selected: My Surgeon only does procedures in this hopital and that is why I was assigned to Columbia.
Competitors: This hospital is clearly one of the 10 BEST hospitals in the nation. I have no regrets, however, becuase of its Impecable reputation, there were no beds available and my entire stay was in the recovery room.
Comments: Outstanding Staff...State of the Art Facility, and Dr Bessler is a Brilliant and gifted Surgeon and Human Being.
