Comments: The nurses at night were awesome, I really liked how they assisted me,, I had this one nurse during the daytime that was sorta new and she kept forgetting about me, she seemed a bit of hard hearing. Some one from dietary sent up shaved ice as part of my lunch, that is full of surgar, but once I told my nurse someone from dietary came to my room and I told her what happened. I was empressed with the oversized wheelchairs and that I had a trapeze over my bed, that helped alot, oh the nurses even brought me a fan since I was hot alot. Over all it wasnt a bad experience, I would recommend it to anyone..

How Selected: This hospital was were the doctor suggested I have the procedure done.
Competitors: As for the bariactric unit it was excellent.
Comments: I would be very careful going through this hospitals emergency room, once you have had the surgery. They are uneducated in this department as far as this procedure is concerned. There are several people that have atitudes. Stand your ground and do not let them bully you into doing something you know you should not do. especially when it comes to taking medications make sure you have them check with your surgeon or primary doctor. This Emergency room has no clue what this surgery is about and do not let them tell you other wise. Other then there uneducated Emergency Room Staff, the Bariactric unit was filled with people that were well educated , and that listen to you.

How Selected: It was where my surgeon's hospital, where he performed the surgery. They have a bariatric program.
Competitors: Better than normal.
Comments: I was very pleased overall. They are persistent in making sure you are at your best health as soon as possible (walking, getting out of bed, taking away my pca pump quickly). I would recommend someone to stay with you, my mom stayed and she had to remind the nurse to take care of my foley cath bag which was super full. Also one of the nurses expressed her opinion about WLS especially for someone on the lightweight side like myself--she really shouldn't have expressed her negative personal opinion and she didn't seem to know a lot about it so she really looked stupid as well but aside from that everything was great. They were really good about keeping my family informed after my surgery while I was in recovery. I also appreciated how the Bariatric Coordinator, RN checked up on me and other bariatric patients--we even had a mini support group meeting before I left the hospital.

Comments: The staff on the floor were wonderful, gentle and caring. The registration personnel were very nice and helpful when I had a problem with a co-payment and worked it out for me seeing as how it was right before surgery and I was very stressed.

How Selected: Dr does the procedure there.
Competitors: Don't know.
Comments: 99% of the nursing staff was great and very attentive. A nurse caught the fact that I was having a PE before serious damage was done. My only concern was the amount of noise at night. Would have like my room door closed at night. With all my complications and the various ICU units and other departments in the hosp all the staff was nice. All and all I would recommend the hospital.

Comments: Go in educated. I had a aide try to feed me twice before I had my leak test. The nurse on the 1st night said she did not have orders for me to walk, I had to insist and then I was allowed to walk. The nurses were always kind but sometimes tried to put things off until the next shift. Just be persistant

How Selected: Surgeons choice
Competitors: I'm not sure yet but it seems okay and I'll update after surgery on Monday 2/3 I was shocked that there were no nurses aides or people to help give you bed baths. Worse yet that you are not given toothbrush, paste, comb, wash basin towels etc. If you are expecterd to care for yourself you should have these daily care items. Ivy was the one to make sure I got the items and even helped me bathe myself the first day. Thank the Lord for Ivy.
Comments: Ivy the nurse in charge of admissions for this type of surgery was very helpful and understanding as were the people doing the pre-op testing. Ivy will try to do all she can to help your stay be top choice but it's also up to you. I walked and pushed myself to do more each time I walked. I was inspired by Ivy's moral support and massaging hands (I had a leg cramp). If you have a choice of hospitals I'm not sure if I'd choose this one because of the personal hygiene issues I experienced. I also only had 1 nurse change my bandages and that was all she did...change 2 of them. She never told me about keeping the area clean and how to keep the staple areas less sore. I think someone should have had in discharge paperwork info on addressing the bandages and how to's of it as well as supply home-care dressing for the following week. This i feel should have been included in the surgery pricing.

How Selected: Surgeon practices at this hosp.
Competitors: I don't know because I have not be hospitalized for a long time but, I don't remember having to wait so long for a nurse to come to my room.
Comments: I had one nurse who left me sitting in a wheel chair for over an hour the day after my surgery. I told radiology to go tell my nurse to come to my room and get me up so I could walk. I did'nt even need her to walk with me just to help me get up and walk. I finally called my surgeon's office and told them what was going on and when he came he had a little talk with the nurse no more problems from her. One nurse seemed a bit predjudice toward my procedure but, I talked to her alot the last night I was there when morning came and I got on the scale and saw I lost 7 pounds she seemed really excited for me she was'nt a bad nurse she just did'nt come across real well on night 2 when I was feeling real bad. But all in all I liked her she kept my room clean and picked up and when I got up to walk she always ran back to clean up my bed for me. One of my day nurses was excellent and I loved her she helped me out and was real sweet to me. And the last nurse I had was awesome also she did everything I needed. I think they are a bit overworked on that floor and they are given too many patients.

Comments: I personally had no problems with the hospital staff, although I know other bariatric patients did. I do know that the staff is not very educated to deal with Bariatric patients. I had to keep on my toes and watch the type of foods they were trying to give me and the medications because it needed to be crushed. Overall, I would say that I had a good experience in Community Hospital.
