How Selected: Dr. Vierra does surgery there.
Competitors: Compared to one other hospital I was in (4 hours away) for a different surgery. This one is the tops.
Comments: Very clean: all the nurses were excellent: provided me with excellent care; I didn't have to wait when I rang for one, very caring, and I could understand them.

How Selected: It was the only hospital where my surgeon performs Bariatric Surgeries
Competitors: I work for another local hospital, and CHOMP is, by far, superior in every way. The staff is friendly, professional and extremely competent. The furnishing and surrounds of the hospital are clean and pleasant. The semi-private rooms are set up to ensure maximum privacy and meet the needs of all patients, including bariatric patients. The check-in prodcedure the morning of my surgery was flawless - unlike any other pre-op registration procedure I've sone in the past.
Comments: My only complaint was that there was construction taking place directly outside my window, so from 7:00 a.m. onward, my room was anything but peaceful and quiet. However, this is a temporary situation, and despite this factor, I would still choose to go to CHOMP again if necessary. It is at the top of my list and I recommend it to anyone, anytime, for any reason.

How Selected: This is the only hospital in the area with the accomodations for GBS.
Competitors: This was a really bad experience. The nurses took over two hours to show up after I pushed the button, it was noisy because of construction, the nurses were rude, I was moved to 4 different rooms during my stay and in one of them the bed and TV didn't even work. It was dirty, crowded, loud, and uncomfortable. I just wanted to go home.
Comments: This is the only hospital in my area that performs the surgery. What a rip off!

Competitors: It is the mecca of healthcare perfection. Or as close as you can get to it.
Comments: Overall, it was a very good experience. There were some language barriers with a few of the nursing staff, which was unsettling.

How Selected: This was the hospital that is closest to my home where the surgery is preformed.
Competitors: I have no other hospital experience to compare it to. I was told constantly by everyone that it would not be like being in the hospital, but rather a 5 star hotel. I really didn't feel that way.
Comments: It was hit & miss with the hospital staff. I had really good nurses & aids and some really bad ones. The good ones were a god send, making me feel very cared for and glad to be there. Now if they would have all been like that, it would have been excellent.

How Selected: Luckily it was the surgeon's hospital and closest to my home.
Competitors: Excellent! Last year I was admitted to another area hospital where I was in ICU for 4 days. Believe me, there is no comparison to that hospital and CHOMP. To me it was like night and day!
Comments: Every department I dealt with at CHOMP was a reassuring and pleasant experience. From my pre-registration, which I did over the phone, to reporting to Short-Stay to be prepped for admittance, to the gentlemen that had to wheel me back & forth to x-ray and the operating room, to the anethesiologist (don't know how to spell it) right before surgery to the recovery nurses to the post-surgery staff, I say thank you, thank you, thank you! They made me feel that my comfort and complaints were important to them. And for that I am so appreciative.

How Selected: CHOMP is an excellent hospital; I had both my kids there. Having Dr Vierra work there is a bonus. CHOMP (a.k.a. Gucci General) is an awesome hospital.
Competitors: I've visited people at Salinas Valley Memorial and Natividad ... no comparison.
Comments: Wonderful hospital. Good staff. Like all hospitals, lots of noise. But, keeping your door shut also shuts most of the commotion out. There's major construction going on so parking is a bear; however there's shuttles constantly going around.

How Selected: CHOMP is the only hospital locally where Dr. Vierra practices. In fact, this is the only hospital where bariatric surgery is offered locally. Dr. Rudo, at SVMH was doing some type of bariatric surgery, but has stopped practicing this. He was not a bariatric specialist, as Dr. Vierra is. However, I have heard though the rumor mill that Vierra trained under Rudo at Stanford.
Competitors: I am familiar with the 3 main hospitals in the Monterey/Salinas area. All are excellent, and all have different areas where they excel. Chomp is very oriented to patient satisfaction. It is also a very beautiful facility, despite the large amounts of construction going on right now.
Comments: I am a Chomp employee, so perhaps I received different care than other patients, but I doubt it. From the Short Stay unit where my hospitalization began to the med/surg unit Garden South, I can only say good things. Every step flowed like clockwork. I arrived and was quickly greeted by the Short Stay staff. My history was reviewed,VS taken, preop meds given, and my IV started. Then off to the OR, where the staff quickly and courteously greeted me and whisked me within minutes into the operating suite. The next thing I recall, I was in the recovery room with my nurse hovering over me to assess and relieve my pain and nausea. Once I was alert enough, and my bed ready, I was quickly taken to my room. I remained there the rest of my stay. The staff was wonderful. My nurses were very quick to bring me pain medicine (except once), and checked on me frequently. The nurse's aides were all delightful. Overall, I could not have asked for a nicer experience, or more responsive staff.
