Comments: My overall experience was very good. I only had a couple of complaints. The morning of my surgery, when I was trying to check in, I told the woman at the front desk that I was preregistered and she still had me wait and sent me to register. I was late getting to the preop area but luckily the surgery before me was delayed as well. From that point on till I got in my room everything was great. There were a couple times that after calling for a nurse to remove the compression stockings so i could go to the restroom...one never came. Luckily I had my husband with me. Everything else went fine until the next morning as we were trying to get ready to leave it seemed as though we were bothering them. The discharge nurse was pleasant however. Overall I would still recommend this hospital as the majority of the staff I came in contact seemed well versed on the needs of WLS patients.

How Selected: I had to take my husband to the ER in October of 2003. This was the closest hospital.
Competitors: This is the worst hospital I have ever been in.
Comments: In October 2003, I had to take my husband to this ER for chest pain and a numb arm. After making him wait in the waiting area for 30 minutes, I finally had to ask if they were going to wait for him to code before seeing him. They reluctantly sent him to triage and discovered that his heart rate was 217. After many hours in the ER and very poor bedside manner, they put him in ICU. 36 hours later, he was dead. My most vivid memory of the whole thing was at 2:00 in the morning when he dies, the middle eastern doctor came to me and said, "your husband died. We couldn't do anything to save him" and then he turned and walked away. I had to have the nurse explain to me what all had been attempted. I would drive out of my way to NOT have to ever step foot in this hospital again. Their ER staff was rude, their doctors don't care, and I think the level of care is below what is expected for a critical cardiac patient.

Comments: I am a nursing administrator, so I may be more critical than most patients. The staff in pre-op testing, radiology, and endoscopy were very friendly and competent. I was also impressed with the OR staff. The nurses on the unit were a different story. The crowded semi-private rooms were dangerous for obese patients to ambulate to the bathroom. The staffing levels seemed inadequate. I waited over an hour several times for pain meds post-op. One nurse did not know that heparin injections need to be given sub-Q. When I was discharged, I had the ultimate insult, when the clueless Filipino nurse showed up in my room with a pediatric wheelchair that was about 12 inches wide! She had difficulty understanding English when I tried to explain that I weighed 260 pounds and would not fit in that chair. Better orientation and sensitivity training are in order at this institution!

Comments: it sucked, no one was ever around, It felt like I was there all alone, the nurses were so rude, when I was just awaking from surg and thats the only time I really ever saw them, I mean They did come in but it was like maybe twice a day unless I was just really drugged up, maybe i dont remember right and am exaggerating which im sure I am, but they were not very friendly there, of course with the exception of the pre op nurses and 1 post of nurse who was an oriental male and was very nice, but then again I might of just been on drugs, I do know that I had to walk out because they supposedly did not have a "big person" wheelchair.

Comments: I felt the nurses and nurses aides were very caring. But if you have to rate the staff at the desk when you buzz from your bedside for assistance i would give them a poor rating. Each time I would buzz for help to go to the restroom they would leave me waiting over 20 minutes with me having to buzz again to remind them I was waiting for help. I only needed help because of my legs being strapped in cuffs to prevent blood clots.

Competitors: I think the staff was excellent. The nursing staff was compassionate and knowlegdable about my surgery. They were quik to get me whatever I needed. The anesthesiologist was wonderful and made me feel very comfortable. I was seen by a Bariatric Nurse who answered all my questions before surgery and after. She has even called and checked on me since I have gotten home. I am an RN myself and can say that I would be proud to work at this hospital with this great staff of people.
Comments: The only thing about Cy Fair Hospital that I didn't like was the semi-private rooms. They were very small. My husband couldn't stay with me and I wish he could have. The hospital was very clean. Dietary was good.

How Selected: CFH was highly recommended by our doctor. We found out on the day before surgery that he is actually the Chief of Surgery for CFH.
Competitors: Cypress-Fairbanks is a small hospital and appears to be quite old although well equipped. Everything is being remodeled.
Comments: We assumed that if we picked a good surgeon, he'd choose a good hospital. That proved generally true. CFH is not a state-of-the-art hospital, but it is adequate and remodeling. It is very understaffed and the nurses aren't attentive to details. I'd recommend you have a family member or friend stay with you the day after surgery.

How Selected: SURGEON'S CHOICE!
Competitors: My main concerns were the nurse's! They knew very little about bariatric patients and surely didn't care to learn.
Comments: I forgot what my symtoms were but I was given a pepsi. UMM No! The nurse don't read the charts and just act on impulse which in any case is dangerous. My mom and I felt like we had to keep saying no I can't have that or do that because I'm a bariatric patient. If you happen to get this hospital make sure someone is with you at all times.

Competitors: It was comfortable and the nurses were fairly responsive, and very willing to help me get up and walk. The beds were large, comfortable, and easy to operate.
Comments: The food was questionable. I do not think that I was given sugar-free jello. I took one bite and was sick to my stomach, so I did not eat it. The coffee and iced tea were not decaf and tasted bad.

Competitors: I have only been in the hospital one other time but I would say that this hospital compares the same as most of the other local hospitals.
Comments: The first day my needs were met very promptly. The next day I was more or less on my own. The nurses are busy and the chairs in the room are not made for comfort. There needs to be some changes made as far as the furnishings go in the bariatric wing. The best thing about Cy-Fair is Dee.

How Selected: My Dr. is affiliated with this hospital.
Competitors: I could say that some of our Austin hospitals are much better.
Comments: Had to recover on the cardiac ward versus the bariatric ward. They failed to bring me two meals. When I did get one, they actually brought me full fledged ICE CREAM! I had no privacy. My roommate was 90 and called the nurses every 5 minutes....I was very quiet and tried to do my own stuff, but one of the monitors kept beeping and I tried to get a nurse for 15 minutes. I feel they probably thought it was the other lady and didn't feel compelled to come in and check. If I was able to recover on the bariatric unit, I think it would have been much better. I was not really impressed with all of the staff...especially one in the recovery unit on the bariatric ward....she was very not empathetic to anything at all. There's much negative that I can say, but Dee, the bariatric nurse was wonderful. Rely on her heavily!

Comments: Very clean, well equipped, and took very good care of me. The only area that needs improvement is when I called for a nurse it was usually a minimum of 15 minutes before they arrived. I would sometimes have to call twice.

Competitors: I would not go to this hospital again if I had a choice for future services.
Comments: The nurses were very slow to respond to a call for medications or needs, such as ice chips, or bathroom help right after surgery. The visitor policy was not properly enforced, so my roomate had 4+ visitors until 10:30 pm, while I was told that my 4 year old and 15 month old were not welcome, as they may disturb my roomate, even for a 5 minute visit. It could be cleaner, as well.
