Competitors: Better than some of the other hospitals I have been in.... worse than others.
Comments: The hospital was beautiful, clean and the testing, billing and registration staff were all very helpful. The nursing staff could use a lot of work, especially the aides. My pain pump broke down the first night after surgery and it took hours to get another one. When they finally did, they tried to change the batteries from the old one and discovered it was the batteries all along. I was without pain medication for hours. Finally got the nurse to get a Dr. order for a shot of pain medication. The second night my IV piggy-back was not hooked up properly and leaked all over the floor. There were air bubbles in my IV tubing which concerned me. No one else seemed to be concerned about it. Call light left out of reach 3 times. Floor staff slow to respond.

How Selected: Deaconess is the hospital used by the surgeon I chose, Trace W. Curry M.D.
Comments: All those I encountered at Deaconess were both friendly and professional in their demeanor. WLS patients are provided a private room to recover. Every request I made was accomodated, including switching the chicken broth served for "lunch" to diluted apple juice, and every question I asked was answered to my satisfaction (and I asked a LOT!) My thanks to everyone involved with my care during my brief stay.

Comments: I ended up with pneumonia and ended up staying 12 days in the hospital. The nurses and nurses’ aids were AWESOME during my stay. They made sure that I got my meds in a timely fashion. When I asked for pain medicine there was no delay in getting it. I would ask for popsicles or ice and they were there in a flash. My only complaint is that the beds are so darn uncomfortable. My overall stay was good.

How Selected: I chose the surgeon, Dr. Curry, and this is where he does his operations and the site of his office.
Competitors: I don't think the views are quite as nice as other hospitals, but that's the nature of Cincinnati. However, I didn't have much time to look out of the windows.
Comments: I had a private room that was well equipped with a table for my family to use, 2 dining chairs, and 2 other comfortable chairs. One chair folded out into a bed in case a family member wanted to stay. I was in Cincinnati with my mother and son and, I guess I shouoldn't say this, but the staff allowed my son to visit me and made a fuss over what a good looking boy he is. The nurses and aides were awsome. They were very encouraging and extremely sensitive, especially when I was in the most pain, including helping me with toileting. On my way out of the hospital, one aide stopped me to give me a hug and wish me luck. And, I had to promise to stop up and visit them when I go in for follow ups. I unfortunately did not get to stay on the WLS floor since it was being remodeled, but I still had good accommodations. The only thing I say is to be sure to get there early so you can get checked in at Central Registration, one woman likes to talk on the phone. That probably wouldn't be a problem for most people, I just run late a lot. But, I LOVE the free valet parking. Oh, if the cafeteria sends you some broth, don't eat it, it's way to salty. Just ask the nurses and they'll get you some Jello.

How Selected: Because this is the location where Deaconess Surgical Weight Loss Center is located & Dr. Curry is the surgeon.
Competitors: I've never been to another "local" hospital, but I've been a patient in at least 5 other hospitals. Even during remodeling, Deaconess rates comparable to the best & surpasses the not so hot ones.
Comments: My overall experience at Deaconess was excellent. In areas of this survey that may have rated less than perfect, the situation was always easily remedied. For instance, on the limited occasions there may have been privacy or quiet issues, I just got up & pulled the curtain or closed the door. I never waited more than 5 or 10 minutes for my call light to be answered.... after working 15 years in the medical field, this is an incredible feat sighting today's staffing shortages. Though there were varying degrees of attentiveness, skills & abilities of the staff, all were extremely friendly & had an excellent bedside manner. I've had some downright nasty nurses in previous hospital stays, yet Deaconess Hospital has employed people with outstanding people skills!

How Selected: That's Where Doctor Curry is, so that's where I had my surgery.
Competitors: It's older, Most of the times I have been there they're having problems with the elevators.
Comments: I can only speak for myself, Dr. Curry, is amazing, his staff is amazing, For the most part nurses and the aids that took care of me were amazing. BUT, there were a couple things I very much disliked. 1st and most important!!! Dr. Curry Ordered an IV Drug for me to help me because I was bleeding internally, this drug would help whatever was bleeding to seal off. This was ordered early in the day on WEDNESDAY, All day I kept asking the nurses has this came up from the pharm. They would just say no not yet. Finally at 11PM I did get a little nasty and said to the nurse (Who's name I believe was Tonya), that again said no its not here yet ( damn someone could bleed to death before getting the medication they need!!!) Not long after that was said the medication did arrive with the Nurse stating (Oh the Pharm. Thought they had already sent this up earlier in the day) Well wouldn't that have been the Nurses job to check???? By the time they got this running in my IV it was after 11pm and by 7am my IV's blew and they had to stop giving it to me. I didn't think house keeping did a very good job. Most days my trash can was over flowing, there was quite a bit of dirt on the bathroom floors, No one took my old broth bowls at one time there were 2-3 still sitting on the table. People came in and out but no one touched them. Also there items that were off my bed (dirty Sheets) that were left in the room for days and was still there when I left. Bottom line, I loved the Dr. and the complete Staff! A special Thanks to Nurses, Amy & Lance They were there during the time I just got out of surgery (the worst time for me) and they were wonderful!!!! The Hospital itself needs work.

Comments: Deaconess has a great program for Baratric Patients under the direction of Dr. Trace Curry. I came from out of state to have Surgery at Deaconess with Dr. Curry. I live in Indianapolis, and I have been an inpatient at several of my area's hospitals. I received as good if not better care at Deaconess which is a much smaller hospital than those I have been in, in Indianapolis. I have to say that the experience was excellent all the way around. The staff made me feel very well cared for. This was very important being far away from home and in a strange place. I was alone most of my stay and that wasn't a problem at all, that is how well I was taken care of. This has been a very positve experience.
