The staff at this hospital was absolutely top notch. Everyone from housekeeping up through the charge nurses was very friendly and helpful. The hospital was clean and my stay was as pleasant as possible.

Comments: You took care of yourself, your meds was given, and if you pushed the botton, you might get them some day, you bath yourself, or family did it. and it took me 2hrs after 3 days of nothing by mouth, after the doctor told them I could have stuff to get it that even after I waited and called. They seemed on one night to be out there talking loud, and laughing, but never came in to anyones rooms till the time for temps and bp,. So I got out of there by insisting. I would not stay another day in that place. So they sent me home. I could not spend 1 more day there. My family felt the same. They had to stay up there and their experince was the same.

Comments: Some nurses were extremely pleasant and attentive, doing everything they could to make sure I was comfortable. (Even helped make me feel less self conscious about cleaning places I couldn't reach, and was nice enough to enquire on my husband's comfort too.) Other nurses however were slow, lazy, and unpleasant. (Promised to be right back to refill pain meds and returned two hours later to ask if there was anything wrong. Ignored the light and buzzer of not only my room but others. When my pain meds were refreshed I walked the hallway to find this nurse and saw her engaged in a friendly conversation with another nurse. The topic not being job related. At this time there were other patients with their nurse light lit up, but she ignored them.) I think the rating of a hospital all comes down to the staff of nurses who care for the patients. Nurses should be attentive, pleasant and understanding. Anyone found not to be should be fired. Everyone has a bad day every once in a while, but you should not be a nurse if you cannot handle being paged to do such tedious tasks as is sometimes required. The two nurses I will remember the most were quite opposite, however I will remember the one nurse who was so caring the most. I think if every nurse were like her we'd have patients refusing to go home!

How Selected: Dr. Sapala peforms the gastric bypass (rny) only at this hospital.
Competitors: I would rate this hospital right up there with UM Medical Center, where I've been hospitalized twice.
Comments: The staff was friendly, the bariatric floor was clean. Each nurse is assigned to about 2-3 patients (maybe more), but they respond to your requests when you push the button. The doctors and nurses are friendly. I think it all depends on your attitude. If you act ugly, like a brat or are demanding you aren't going to be treated nicely by the staff. You need to remember the basic rules of courtesy -- could you please?... thank you... HELLO. I don't believe they'll mistreat you, but you can't go anywhere (especially a hospital where you're sick) and act ugly.

How Selected: It was the only hospital in which my surgeon did the surgery.
Competitors: No opinion because I haven't been in any other hospitals in the area.
Comments: I had heard some not so flattering things about St.John Detroit Riverview Hospital. So I was a little nervous intially, but isn't it good to be wrong sometimes?! Especially when what you've heard it totally opposite from what you've experienced- the nursing staff was very attentive and friendly, the bariatric center was nice, the doctor's were wonderful- i honestly cannot say enough positive things about the hospital and the staff. If I had to be hospitalized again, I would gladly go to this hospital. Don't turn your nose up because this facility is in downtown Detroit, believe me you will be pleasantly surprised.
