Competitors: It was so nice and small not a big medical center. Very personal.
Comments: Loved this facility. The nursing care was great and all my needs were taken care of. I really enjoyed the smallness of this hospital. It was much more personal and I felt my care was better than a large medical center. They had all the latest equipment and I couldn't be happier with my hospital stay.

How Selected: My surgeon is on staff here.
Competitors: well, I worked at a major medical center level 1 trauma center... for many reasons, the small hospital is better for planned situations, the larger , trauma centers are good for those life or death situations.. Lucky for me, my surgeon is experienced in trauma!!
Comments: The staff overall was wonderful. I was in the ICU for a day and a half.. ICU staff was fantasitc ESP Wanda & Jack... I had one nurse that really sent me over the edge... She was not familiar with my surgeons protocol for post op GB patients, I seemed to know more than her about what I should be doing!! Aside from this one nurse, which I did share my complaints with the nurse supervisior, the rest of the staff was wonderful and attentive. I opted to pay for a private room which was HUGE & they even let my husband stay over night in my room with me... they found him a stretcher to sleep on...

How Selected: My cousin had the lap band there so she recommened it to me.
Competitors: I can not compare. Dobbs Ferry was my first stay at a small hospital.
Comments: The only problem I had with the staff at this hospital was that the night of the surgery I had to use the bathroom by myself because the nurse was too busy talking about her personal life. And also I wanted ice chips and she wouldn't help me.

How Selected: My doctor is affiliated. Would not choose to use this hospital again.
Competitors: Smaller, more intimate, however, it is either understaffed or undermanaged as the nursing staff was not very helpful.
Comments: The hospital is small. On all pre-surgical visits I was very impressed with the place, I thought the staff was great, friendly and attentive, but, post surgery I was surprised at how uncaring the nursing staff seemed to be. The contrast was stunning. Before surgery they gave you a booklet about how great their care is, I sat down and met with a couple of nurses - required by the doctor - and they told me how wonderful everything was and gave me a chart of what to expect each day. None of that was actually carried out, and the nurses pretty much ignored me when I asked them to do some of the things on the list. One of them actually laughed and said we NEVER do that - who's got the time? (it was checking in on the patient at specific intervals during the day). Thank goodness my husband was there to help me and to get a nurse to come in to the room when they didn't respond to the buzzer. Make sure you have an advocate there with you!

How Selected: When initially researching surgery I was down to two choices of surgeons - one worked from Westchester Med Ctr - one from Dobbs Ferry. Both of my parents had surgery years ago in Dobbs Ferry and I remembered how they said it was such a pleasure in comparison to Westchester. Since Dr. Artuso and Dr. Choi's offices are in the hospital all of their surgeries are handled there.
Competitors: Westchester Med Ctr while undeniably where one wants to go for open heart or other major surgeries - they are a madhouse. My parents were both there for extended stays and numerous surgeries. Doctors come and go and they have all the same problems you normally hear about - too few staff, unresponsive, etc. Considering the good things I had heard and read here about Dobbs Ferry - along with my surgeon - it was a natural choice for me.
Comments: I can't say enough good things about my experience there. They honestly treat you like family and the staff acts like a family. Since it is small everything is done like clockwork. They were very attentive and very considerate of weight loss surgery needs. They had extra large wheelchairs, etc. No one ever made me feel uncomfortable. I am very, very pleased that I had the surgery there and, needless to say, would highly recommend this hospital and my surgeon to others.

How Selected: It's the hospital my surgeon was affiliated with.
Competitors: My surgeon and the surgical staff were wonderful. The nurses, aides, aftercare staff were absolutely horrible and inept with a few exceptions.
Comments: The after care staff was awful. I felt that I had to beg for help. The equipment malfunctioned constantly, staff did not respond to buzzer until fourth or fifth time. The hospital only has 50 beds and during my walks around the ward, most of the rooms/beds were empty. The staff was lazy, rude and I did not feel safe there.

Competitors: VERY QUIET CLEAN AND SMALL . ONLY HAVING 1 FLOOR MADE IT SO THAT YOU GOT A LOT OF 1 TO 1 ATTENTION WHICH YOU DO NOT GET AT LARGER HOSPITALS.
Comments: QUIET, CLEAN AND COMFORTABLE AND THE STAFF WAS VERY WELCOMING AND COURTEOUS. I WOULD GO BACK FOR THAT KIND OF ATTENTION ANYTIME

How Selected: My preferred surgeon was based there.
Competitors: Very small and efficient. I loved the high nurse-to-patient ratio.
Comments: Overall I am exceptionally pleased. The staff was very friendly and professional, there were even a few that I actually missed after I was released. The ward is a tad noisy with endless paging from the hospital intercom, but it tapers right off in the late afternoon. Evenings and nights spent on the ward are very quiet and restful. One small negative to add -- I had blood drawn and IV's changed several times, and only one person wore gloves while performing these tasks (a lab tech) I do think it's imperative that the ward nurses wear gloves when dealing with needles.
