I have to say all the nurses, LPN's, everyone was very supportive, caring and attenative even if they weren't assigned to you - I don't think anyone will get a good night of rest at a hospital b/c they are there to check on your vitals and see how you are all during the night, which is great but tiring, it is totally understandable though. Parking was a little far, I had seen nurses and employees all parking towards the front in the visitors parking area which I think should be for visitors only and not employees. I had a great experience with limited problems. |

It is smaller and older than many of the hospitals in the area. |
| Comments: |
It was clean and provided the necessary basics. Rooms are considerably smaller than those at other facilities. The rooms were very tight, but each was a private room. Furniture, etc. in rooms seemed at least as old as my 25 yr old kids. Clean and in good repair, but old especially if compared to other hospitals, such as UNC Chapel Hill. Generally, care was very good. However, didn't receive some medications for another condition and there was a problem with pain meds on one shift. |

I must say all the nurses that cared for me was great, until the last day. The male ICU nurse I had really cared about my needs and made sure I was very comfortable. He really need a raise. The 2 nurses assigned to me my last day was horrible. The had NO bedside manners, just did introduce themselves to me. Otherwise my stay was good. |

The only other hospital I have been in locally is Western WakeMed in Cary. I preferred that hospital. |
| Comments: |
Durham Regional wasn't too bad. My only serious complaint was that I was told over and over how important it is to get up and walk as much as possible after surgery to help with the discomfort from the gas pumped into my abdomen during the surgery. On A FEW occasions, my nurses were too busy with other patients to escort me on the walks and as a result I didn't get to walk as much as I could. |

Sufficient staff in both ICU and regular floor; most of staff was trained on special needs of bariatric patients; I have heard complaints from other patients that the wall-attached toilet was not accommodating for patients weighing over 300 lbs, but the bariatric wing of the hospital is undergoing some renovations and this may be addressed. |

| Comments: |
The doctors, nurses and everyone I came in contact with at Duke’s DRH have been excellent. Ruth was my anesthesiologist and she took great care of me. My ICU nurses Ginger, Tiffany, and Janice were great and they took wonderful care of me. Beth, DHR’s WLS coordinator stopped by on my last day to follow-up with me to see if everything had gone as planned. We met the week before at my pro-op appointment where she explained the hospital process to us. DRH does 500+ gastric bypass procedures a year and they have the process down pat. I would recommend DRH to anyone considering weigh loss surgery. I was in and out of the hospital in 2 ½ days and have had no complications or issues. |

Everyone at Durham Regional from the desk clerk signing in to the nurse who escorted me out, was great.
The nurses that tend to you just before you went into surgery were awesome! They cared for you and made sure you were comfortable and taken care of.
Dr. Grant and his staff are wonderful and I thank God daily for being able to have had the opportunity to meet them and have this surgery.

I spent most of my stay in the ICU dept due to having a CPAP machine. I had the most excellent care in the ICU. I will say the the regular rooms - private - are very small but big enough to have a chair my husband could sleep in plus there were a couple of other chairs for visitors.
All in all I thought DRH took very good care of me and my needs. |

In public areas it apprears modern and nice, but on the patient floor I was on, everything appeared old, dreary and 25 years out of date. Everything looked dirty, from the ceilings, to the walls to the floors. Nothing looked neet, orderly, bright nor cheerful. Most of the people were nice, but a few didn't want to be bothered. On the whole, I was well taken care of but I felt as if I had stepped back in time. Compared to Forsyth and Medical Park Hospitals in Winston-Salem which look as if they are in the right decade at least. |
| Comments: |
They do need to be a little more sensitive to the dietary needs of gastric bypass post-op patients. They served me Boost high protein which has a HUGE amount of sugar (similar to a candy bar) which made me very sick on my first trial of full liquids. They would be better off serving just skim milk or a low carb protein shake. |

The staff at DRH seem to be happy to be there. Much of the staff at other hospitals in the area are short staffed or the staff have attitude problems. Not the case a Durham Regional!! Would definitely plan another procedure there if necessary. |

It just was so hectic and chaotic |
| Comments: |
I had some really awesome nurses recovery and ICU thereafter it went downhill. Pretty aloof bunch of people if you ask me.
I was in the recovery room for 7 hours because they had no place to put me. When I finally made it to the ICU it was complete chaos. The woman next to me died at 3:30 AM the other person next to me had brain surgery. There were so many people in ICU. I had to remind nurses at times that I needed certain things taken care of. The place was just in disarray. There were chairs and lab equipment and mess everywhere. Not very restful.
I got wind that I was to be moved to my room and it took close to six hours for the transition to finally happen. I was put in a double bed room(small for hubby and I ) and there were warnings of possible roommate to move in. And indeed it did happen about 12 hours later and I had a roommate. She came in from surgery and vomitted all over herself. I couldn't bare to listen to the coughing and vomitting all nite so we opted to get out of there. Went home less than 2 days after surgery. Not by choice, but there was no rest or recovery there for me. Not very pleased with this hospitals accomodations. |

I haven't stayed in any of the other hospitals. |

The entire staff was genuinely compassionate and willing to help. They were all very well informed about the bariatric surgery, and the one or two who weren't were very willing to learn. I was in ICU the first night and I'm convinced they were angels sent from heaven. |

I was put in ICU the first 2 nights between the moaning of other patients and the blare of the radios i couldnt sleep. The am nurse was a bitty. When given a 'sponge bath' all that was washed were my hands and legs!!! 2 patients per nurse and still couldnt get any help!! moved to regular room and it was better got more help with the 6/1 ratio on regular floor....ICU-HORRIBLE!!! floor was very good some great nurses there.... |

| DRMC is where the Duke Weight Loss Surgery group operates - it is part of the DUMC system, though owned by Durham. This allows Dr. Grant's group to operate at maximum capacity without having to wait for a room at Duke. |

I've been a patient in both - Durham Regional is a wonderful facility and has a wonderful sense of community. My mother, who was with me the whole time, was quite impressed with the attention given not only to me but to her. It was clean, I was kept clean and comfortable, and everyone seemed to be concerned about my needs and comfort. |
| Comments: |
They need valet parking - my mother has mobility issues and sometimes there wasn't a space left in the handicap parking area. |

JUST AS GOOD AS OTHERS I HAVE BEEN TO. |

SOME OF THERE EQUIPMENT WAS HEAVY WEIGHT READY, BUT THAT IS BECAUSE THEY JUST STARTED USING THIS HOSPITAL FOR THE GASTRIC BYPASS. I WAS TOLD THAT THE EQUIPMENT WAS GOING TO BE UPGRADED BECAUSE THEY DO SO MANY RNY'S THERE NOW. THEY DID THERE BEST TO MAKE SURE I WAS COMFORTABLE ON THE STUFF THAT WASNT HEAVY READY. |
