How Selected: My surgeon told me this was the hospital we would use.
Competitors: I think it is average based on my limited experiences with other hospitals in this area. The other hospital I've used was a similar outpatient experience.
Comments: Ok..all my pre-op testing was done here and they were soooo efficient. My wait times for each test were negligible. The only thing that sucked was that either he phlebotomy staff of the lab lost my nasal swab and I was called in to do it again which was inconvenient. Now to the "suck". The two men who transported me from the recovery room to my private room post-op hit my bed into a wall not once but twice!!! That was and continues to be the most painful thing for me. Granted, the incision site that hurts was expected because muscle was cut, but seriously...the wall thing was uncalled for, avoidable, and has most likely contributed to extra pain for me. Not acceptable!

How Selected: Dr. F. told me this is where it would be done at.
Competitors: It's a good hospital. Ryan said the cafeteria food is in need of help, though. lol.
Comments: I had some very nice nurses that helped out. Sometimes it took a while to get a response and I know that there is a huge shortage of nurses & they did the best they could, but there was a couple of times that I really needed help & had to wait for a while. And the IV in my hand hurt like hell but they wouldn't move it again. I thought my hand was melting off when they'd give me the pain meds. But overall, they were friendly & helpful & encouraging.

Competitors: I dont know of any.
Comments: I am very pleased with my stay at ENH. During my stay, my other half collapsed in my hospital room and experienced a first time seizure. The nursing staff and interns all responded to help in any way they could. I cannot imagine what it would have been like if this had happened anywhere else. I appreciate all the care and concern I was given along with my other half's care. Tehy made sure we stayed in communication and even took the time to bring me over to his floor to see him. Of course, I dont ever want to have surgery again, but if I were to, I would feel perfectly comfortable having it there!!!

Comments: after my surgery I had a horrible experience with a nurse in the recovery area my back was in so much pain when I came to, and I was crying and begging for relief and she was very rude and insensitve and rough, she said that there was nothing that she could do for me and that I just had to deal with it until i got upstairs to a room and that it would take about 6 people to move me, so I had to just deal with the discomfort (actually I was not as large as she made it seem and I was able to get around just perfectly on my own without ever needing help during my entire stay, she just sterotyped me because I was overweight) it was really horrible and I was crying so bad, when I got upstairs to the room it turned out that they had me on the bed backwards and my head was at the end my feet should've been which caused the discomfort. Other than that my experience was quite nice and very comfortable I would actually recommend this hospital to anyone who lives in my area and is considering this surgery. The nurses were all very nice and helpful, after all one bad apple does not always spoil the whole bunch.

How Selected: I selected this hospital over Glenbrook (in Glenview IL- also part of the Northwestern hospitals) because I thought I would get the best care from the best doctor and nurses. This was not the case. My mother had Colon surgery in Glenbrook and that was MUCH better. Go there if you have a choice.
Competitors: I have been in several hopsitals, both as a patient and as a visitor. This one was really low on my scale. If you have a choice regarding the 'Northwestern Hospitals' please choose Glenbrook! I thought it would be bad to go to Glenbrook since it was more of a 'community' hospital; but rather you got the quiteness of a community hospital with the care of an excellent staff.
Comments: I assumed by reading other posts about this hospital that it would have an excellent staff and have it's own 'bariatric' section. NOPE. Instead I was treated by a resident doctor (his first day on staff) and student nurses- even though I SPECIFICALLY stated to several employees that I wanted no students working on me. The resident doctor was not aware of my type of surgery, he counter-acted what MY SURGEON said to me and discharged me due to my insurance approval rather than what MY SURGEON stated (not until I pass gas). The beds, visiting chairs and recliners are not meant for overweight people. I was put into a standard surgery section and when asked about why I wasn't put in the bariactric section they said they didn't have one! I felt like a damn practice doll for the nurses! The nurses took FOREVER to answer a page; then to come when paged. I usually had to page at least twice- for having so many 'student's' working on me (I had about 3!) I did not get a good response time. Average was about an hour after first page. I HIGHLY SUGGEST that if you want an EXPERIENCED staff, do not choose this hospital. If you don't mind giving your body over for education, than please feel free to use this hospital. Re: Visitors: I specifically requested/informed to Karen, the bariatric coordinator of this hospital, several weeks before my surgery and to my 6AM nurse that my mother and brother would be staying with me. They said OK but did nothing to prepare for it! I was told (after waiting 3 hours for a room that wasn't prepared for me) when I got to my room that they had to 'order' a cot and it was unlikely they would get one (I got to my room at 4:30PM after having surgery at 7:30AM). After I threw a big hissy fit, they miraculously brought a cot for my mom. This was only after I kept pestering everyone over and over again for this item. This was at 9:15PM. Prior to getting the cot brought in was that it wouldn't be ready until 11PM or not at all. As my mom was preparing to leave for her 2 HOUR DRIVE home they brought a cot in. My brother slept on the recliner. I also requested (in writing no less!) that I have a binder for surgery. Did I get one- not until I bitched about it! I was as pleasant to the staff as I could be because it wasn't there fault that they did not meet my assumptions / expectations. I am so pissed that I made my family drive an additional HOUR to go to this hospital rather than Glenbrook. But we had all assumed that this was supposed to be the better of the two. WRONG. If you have any sense- go to GLENBROOK.

Comments: The staff was very nice. There was a nurse in Recovery named Jamie who was so sweet! Also, all of my nurses during my stay there were great, including my nurses aids. I never had a single problem, and all were very accomodating. The best part of course was my surgeon, Dr. Frantzides who is a Godsend! He performed my surgery laproscopically in two hours, with my BMI of 62! I had no complications at all!

How Selected: This was one of two hospitals that my surgeon operates out of. It was more convenient and I felt more comfortable at Evanston Northwestern.
Competitors: I don't know much about other hospitals (fortunately), but I was pleasantly surprised by my experience at ENH.
Comments: I have to say that 99% the nursing and health care staff were fabulous. Sometimes they were busy and couldn't get to me as quickly as I might have liked, but once they were there for me, they were incredible. The Nurses and Nursing Assistants couldn't have been more caring and empathetic. The respiratory and blood staff were also very sensitive. I was very impressed.

Comments: My ICU nurses (Hannah and Christine) were outstanding. In general, a very positive experience. The only real problem I encountered was in patient transportation. Moving me from recovery to ICU was a nightmare, from ICU to a regular floor was Keystone Kops, and it even took half an hour to get a wheelchair to get me out of there. All in all though, a great place.

Comments: I have few complaints-the only things I can think of was that staffing on nights was obviously short, but I still feel my needs were adequately met (and with the nationwide nursing shortage it was expected), and that are still a few issues to iron out in dealing with the morbidly obese patient (example-I barely fit in the "big" wheelchair!!)

I know that while I was in surgery the OR nurse called down to my wife every hour to update her as the the progress of the surgery. As to be expected, once I left the ICU the nurses checked in on me less, but were always responsive to the call button. It was always answered from the desk in about 30 to 60 seconds.

How Selected: I found Dr. Frantzides' profile information on this website, and learned that he recently moved his practice from Rush Pres St Luke's to Evanston. Evanston was also convenient for me for the pre-op tests, since it is the half-way point in my commute to work.
Comments: The hospital staff was wonderful! They were very attentive and helpful. Evanston Northwestern has a great reputation for quality care, and I would recommend them highly. Evanston is fortunate that Dr. Frantzides has joined their staff; his practice is a wonderful addition to a fantastic hospital.

Comments:

Updated 2/23/2004 -- Hey, ObesityHelp.com website adminstrators -- why is this review showing up twice??

In general, I think Evanston is a clean, well-maintained hospital. A big problem however is being understaffed, especially overnight, but I'd imagine this is problematic is all hospitals. I had a very nice bed, designed for large patients, with lots of controls and adjustments.

The biggest equipment problem I had was the bathroom. I was told I couldn't use the normal commode because it's the kind that hangs on the wall and is only rated to 350 lbs. So, they brought in a portable commode which, while oversize, was not big enough for me. After a very frustrating and maddening conversation with the night nursing supervisor, nothing really happened and I told her that if push came to shove, I would have to use the regular bathroom toilet, even though I was "forbidden" from doing so. Eventually, my overnight nurse picked up the ball and made a phone call and soon I had a much larger portable commode which was OK, albeit not real comfortable and out in the main hospital room. Why couldn't the confrontational supervisor do that in the first place???

The other problem I had was that 24 hours post op, I'd still not been offered a sponge bath and I was in great need of one. When I mentioned this to the overnight nursing assistant, she was incredulous that the daytime shift hadn't taken care of that, but informed me that she was overwhelmed with new admits and heart patients that needed special attention and she'd try to help me later on. This was extremely upsetting to me, because after all, I'm a patient too, right? To her credit, however, she did come back a couple hours later and get me cleaned up. I think she knew how upset I was, because after that, she really did pay alot of attention to me and help me greatly. It's too bad that the quality and amount of attention I got was directly related to the specific personnel. I realize that's human nature, but in a place like a hospital, seems to me that the standards should be more consistent.

Back to the bathroom inadequacies, Evanston Hospital is obviously in the embryonic stages of accomodating bariatric patients. Now that Dr. Frantzides is operating there, the volume is increasing significantly. I also heard that yet another bariatric surgeon is soon joining the staff. The hospital administration is going to have to plan and budget for bathroom upgrades. Not only are the commodes inadequate, but the showers are way too small for large people, and there is generally not nearly enough room for a big person to maneuver, especially around the commode. The couple of times I did sit on the commode out of necessity, I was cramped on both sides, and the TP dispenser was jammed into my left leg. Nice, huh? Bottom line... if the Evanston administrators are reading this... you can't have it both ways. If you're going to grow your bariatric surgery program and, thus, benefit from the new and added revenue, you MUST upgrade these facilities to accomodate the patients. Anything short of that would be insensitivity and consumer abuse.

Last, but not least, I was not able to rest overnight. Seemed like there was constantly someone coming in to do something or give me something, or check something. There are many different people working that each have there own orders and agenda, but the overlap means that a patient can't rest at night. There ought to be a way to balance all this during normal hours so that a patient can at least get 4-6 hours of uninterrupted rest. At least for me, it was only 3 days. If I'd had an open procedure and had to stay 5-7 days, I think I'd have gone insane!

Oh yeah, one last thing. I was given these nebulizer Albuterol respiratory treatments every 6 hours or so. One of the nights I was there, the overnight respiratory tech wrote down on my chart that I'd refused a treatment. NEVER HAPPENED!! Interestingly, this person wrote the same comment on the chart for all 3 of Dr. Frantzides patient who were in that night. Yeah, right, like we're all gonna refuse a treatment our doctor ordered for us!! What a lazy slug. That person should lose their job!

How Selected: My insurance company's coverage is with this one, but I already think very highly of Evanston Hospital anyway so would have chosen it if given the choice.
Competitors: Evanston Hospital is better than most of the local hospitals. It's newer and more sophisticated.
Comments: The nursing staff didn't seem very together. They certainly didn't seem very aware of how to treat bariatric patients. Also, the meals sent up were ridiculous. I think more education needs to be put in place about these operations because there are a great deal of these being performed there each day.

How Selected: I didn't, had to go there because my surgeon was there.
Competitors: This was my first time in a Chicago hospital. I live near Quincy IL and have always used Blessing Hospital for inpatient stays.
Comments: After having three children and having to be in the hospital in Jan at home I feel that I have a pretty good idea of how a hospital should be. With the exception of a handful of nurses, all others seemed cold, distant, and pretty much not helpful. Dietary had no idea what diet jello was, they kept sending me reg jello, after a call to the dietary dept explaining how important it was for me not to get reg jello I was told this would not happen again, I asked for them to please bring me diet jello as I don't care for broth and that was my only other option..can you believe, they brought me another round of REG jello!!! That led to a call to the service excellence dept and I explained it to them...next two meals, reg jello again, so I just didn't eat as calls did not seem to help. There is a nurse named Karen who is supposed to be in charge of Bariatric patients, I never got any one on one time with her which left me feeling quite unprepared to go home. All in all, I have to say my experience at the hospital stunk, oh yeah didn't mention woman in x-ray who dropped my IV machine and while my IV fluids and antibiotic were spraying all over the room proceeded to scream at the young man who rolled me in before shouting at him to just get out, it was so not his fault he didn't knock it off. Anyway, enough...you get the picture. LOVE Dr Frantzides and have no regrets about him but wish he and Dr John were somewhere else.

How Selected: My doctor had moved his practice to it, so I had no choice! But i didnt really care where I got it done, as long as I got it done.
Competitors: It was clean, nicely decorated, looked a little more new. Nice sized rooms.
Comments: Overall it was a good hospital. I loved alot of my nurses, but there was maybe 2 that I didnt think liked their job, or didnt want to be helping. Like I was a bother to them. Everyone else was nice, and willing to help in any way at all.
