How Selected: My bariatric surgeon does his surgery there
Competitors: I have never had a hospital stay before
Comments: Some hospital staff were incredibly wonderful - helpful, supportive, knowledgeable and service-oriented. Unfortunately, these were clouded over by the staff members that obviously didn't care about their jobs, were bored being there and didn't give two hoots about the patients. I had one care attendant that wouldn't even look at me. It's hard to put up with fat phobia or disgust when you're recovering in the hospital! I had an RN that was told I needed a bed pan, she said she'd get it for me, then she took off on a break and my husband found her in the cafeteria 20 minutes later! I almost wished I had soiled the bed and made a mess everywhere - only problem was, she wouldn't have been the one that would have had to clean it up! The bed was not a bariatric bed. I was comfortable in it - but if I was a wider person, it wouldn't have been acceptable. I asked an RN if they had bariatric beds, and I was told they do not. I was surprised to hear this. When I first came in my room, it seemed all in order. I had just arrived from surgery - but my family was with me. They found dead flies on the window sill, the windows were so grimey you couldn't even see clearly through them, there were potatoe chips, salt and pepper packages, balls of dust on the floor. When my sister asked the cleaner the next day if he had cleaned the room the day before, he said he sure had. When my sister explained what she found, he said that the staff very often use the empty rooms to watch TV and have their meal breaks! Later, during my stay there, I noticed this very thing. A man had been in the next room and had purchased a TV rental. He was discharged in the afternoon and they cleared out his room. For the rest of the night, that TV was going and various floor staff (RNs, care attendants) went back and forth into that room to watch the TV and eat! The toilet in the bathroom leaked. My sister used a cloth to try and pick up the liquid, she stepped on it and swished it back and forth once - each way. When she picked it up to chuck it out, the paper towel was dark grey where it had touched the floor! The floor was filthy!! Seeing this dirt just made me worry about how clean everything else was in the hospital! The hospital floor I was on (1 west, I think) has a terrible communication system. It's over used, and probably improperly used. Every time anyone is looking for anyone, they put it over the intercom that is heard in every room as well as the hallway. They have a second intercom system for just the hallway too. If you need assistance, you are to press the call button, and a buzzer sounds at the reception area, and a light goes on outside your door. They'll answer fairly quickly and ask you what you need and you tell them. Sometimes you'll hear them page someone to go to your room. I think every time I pressed the call button, they asked me three times if I needed anything. And they'd have to page someone every time. So just imagine how many rooms there are, with how many patients, and each call request getting at least three intercom pagings. And that thing doesn't shut down at night either! I needed some special assistance because of osteo arthritis. I needed a toilet raiser. This type of equipment was hard to come by for the hospital - apparently they only have a couple remaining! I can't be the only patient that has great upper body strength but lousy knees. I appreciated the fact that they managed to find me the toilet raiser - but guess what? There was only one bar in the bathroom. There was still no way for me to be able to get on or off the toilet by myself. I needed to always have someone on the right to hold on to to act as a bar. When staff are so expensive, you'd think they'd spend some funds on getting appropriate bars in place!! The raisers and bars would be helpful for some bariatric patients, but definitely for orthopedic and elderly patients! None of the public bathrooms in either the Faxton or St Luke's hospital campuses were fully handicap accessible. They were all low toilets with impracticle/incomplete bars. When I checked with the nurses, they all said they had no higher toilets, at all.

Comments: This hospital is going through some growning pains while it is merging with another hospital. Pre-op registration as well as some pre-op testing is in an entirely different location. You aren't told until you arrive at one or the other whether or not you are in the right location. Housekeeping was terrile even after being requested by nursing staff. I found that if I didn't request to have my container for measuring my fluid out-go emptied, it did not get done. Oh yeah, one last thing...take a box of tissues into the bathroom with you....there will be T-paper..but you won't be able to get it out of the holder except in tiny pieces. PS...the only reason I give them horrible on restful stay is because I was directly accross from the nursing station

Comments: THe 1 day experience I had made me want to go home sooner. The staff was minimal (they tried very hard), supplies were non existent and I shared a bathroom with 3 other patients. Urine had to be saved and everyone's "potty" was left in the bathroom, full, or in the toilet, for hours. NOT ENOUGH WORKERS! I never got breathing exercise program and appliance until Dr. Graber came in the next day when I was to go home. He made things happen!!

Comments: Anyone who thinks they will rest in a hospital, in general, has to be nuts. However, St. Luke's had construction going on which made it noisier. The staff were very helpful, but busy and sometimes slow to get you what you needed. The nurses and aides were great, though. I had a great stay, all being considered.

Comments: The staff is much more aware and interested in WLS than they were even 6 months ago when my wife had the surgery - some of the younger staff wanted to talk when they had time so they could learn more and enjoyed seeing former patients so they could see all the changes (even if they didn't recognize them all :-) ).
