How Selected: This was the hospital that my surgeon performed his WLS at, as well as an acceptable hospital with my insurance company.
Competitors: This is a difficult question to answer as I have only been in the hospital once before in my lifetime and that was giving birth to my daughter 30 years ago. I assume that they are about average compared to most other hospitals now.
Comments: I found the hospital to be understaffed when it came to nurses and aides on the surgical floor. My experience with the cleaning staff, radiology staff, and surgical staff were all excellent.

How Selected: It'where my surgeon practiced and my insurance would pay.
Competitors: I am still new to Florida, and have no personal knowledge of any others in the area.
Comments: I was actually at Florida Med'l 2 other times in the 1-1/2 months before my surgery on 9/5-02. The first time, on 7/24/02, my surgery was stopped because my lung collapsed. It turns out i have an extremely SHORT trachea that the anesthesiologist didn't notice while intubating me, therefore the lung problem. Then, the week before my scheduled surgery, i had an intestinal blockage that i got hospitalized for. They were VERY thorough in checking for everything and ultimately decided it was my hiatal hernia that had caused the problem. I have to say I had the best care there at that time. The nurses took care of me like I was their baby! I wish I had had the same nurses after my REAL surgery!!

How Selected: I was referred to FMC by my PCP.
Competitors: I have not stayed at other local hospitals, but my experience at Dallas' Presbyterian Hospital was better.
Comments: Perhaps it is due to a nursing shortage or perhaps I was a difficult patient (although I tried hard not to be demanding), but I truly felt uncared for by most of my personal nurses. Perhaps I just needed someone to spend a moment or two to sooth my fears and address my pain - or just listen to me a bit. That only happened the first day when I happened to have a great nurse, but the rest of my stay I really felt "on my own".

How Selected: This is the hospital where my surgeon performs the surgeries.
Competitors: It's an older hospital, but a good one.
Comments: The hospital has a unit for bariatric surgery patients, which is great. It allows you to meet people who have had the surgery also and to provide support to one another. The main negative parts were the parking, which is horrible, and some, not all, of the nursing and patient care staff. Most of the staff is great, but some could use some lessons in bedside manner.

Competitors: Its an older hospital. But the care is out of this world. Nurses are attentive and answer your call in a very timely manner.
Comments: I have nothing negative to say about it. I only stayed there for only one full day. I came in on Thursday, had my surgery, Satayed Friday all day and went home by 12:30 on Saturday.

Competitors: i felt i needed more help then they gave, thank god for family members who slept over the first night. put me in a room with another unrelated post op.the rooms were small and with over head trapeze bed made it impossible to move about.
Comments: my stay was very uncomfortable the first two nights and signed myself out to go home. first day and night need help getting in and out of bed to bathroom without a foley to hold urine you go many many times..

How Selected: My surgeon, Dr. Carrasquilla uses this hospital.
Competitors: I have always used another Fort Lauderdale hospital and just did not feel comfortable with allowing them to hold my life in their hands. I have had to correct technicians at this other hospital many times and have caught them making mistakes in the past on more than one occasion. I would not have surgery at this hospital where the other major laparascopic surgeons operates from. Sorry, but everyone at FMC knew EXACTLY what they were doing and I found out quickly that many FMC workers have been there for years. At the other Ft. Laud hospital I have always had the impression they didnt have a clue as to what they were doing.
Comments: At Florida Medical Center I felt that every technician, nurse or staff member I came in contact with was well acquainted with how to deal with larger patients and the pain we have as WLS post ops. They are experienced in handling RNY patients because my surgeons do so many of these procedures. I could not have asked for better care. I had a private room and they brought in a bed for my girlfriend to stay the first night and then my husband the next night.
