Bariatric Surgery Program at Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin

Bariatric Surgery Program at Froedtert & Medical College of WisconsinThe Bariatric Surgery Program at Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin offers a unique, holistic approach and multi-disciplinary team.  The team, including a surgeon, nurse practitioner, dietitian, psychologists and others, consults with patients one-on-one to make sure they understand all they need to know before undergoing bariatric surgery.  Careful monitoring through five years of post-operative recovery helps insure patients achieve a new healthy lifestyle, as well as significant weight loss.

Additional resources, including a support group and an exercise program developed especially for those who have undergone bariatric surgery, help patients stay on track and reach their goals.

Experienced Medical College of Wisconsin surgeons (certified by the American College of Surgeons and members of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery) offer the Roux Y Gastric Bypass — a procedure proven to offer the best combination of weight loss with the fewest nutritional risks. The surgeons specialize in minimally invasive techniques, and also offer traditional open surgery, depending on the needs of the individual.

How Selected: This was the hospital my surgeon was affilliated with.
Competitors: This is a top rate hospital -- it also houses the Medical College of Wisconsin and leads the way with innovative technology and care for patients.
Comments: I rated the quiet as only good since I was freqently interrupted by the nurses, surgeons, or residents coming in to check on me. The parking only got a good due to major construction (expansion) going on and having to navigate thru to find parking. The floor where I was has specially trained nurses and staff for bariatric patients and they take extra care with the patients.

Competitors: Froedtert is a first rate trauma hospital and I've only spent time in one other hospital, and had no complaints about either.
Comments: I was very pleased with the whole procedure. From check-in to discharge. If there was a negative, in was that the nursing staff was efficient but I thought not as friendly as I expected. After surgery you go to the general surgery area so the nurses have to deal with different types of patients.

How Selected: My WLS surgeon practices here...he is the former head of trauma for this hospital. It is the #1 trauma center in the Milwaukee area.
Competitors: I have been a surgical patient in 2 other hospitals and while the care I received at those was good...they don't come close to comparing to the care that I got at Froedtert!!
Comments: There was a chalkboard in the room and every shift change, the nurses, assistants and cleaners would come in and introduce themselves and write their names on the board so I could remember their names. Even the food service people did the same. They ALL would ask how I was feeling, did I need anything....I was impressed that even the food staff and cleaners did the same. I really felt pampered and cared about.

Competitors: no comparison
Comments: the only reason I rated the restfully quiet question a good was because no matter what hospital you're at, you usually don't sleep good, too many people in and out. It was an excellent experience

How Selected: The surgeon that was recommended to me works through that hospital.
Competitors: I have had hospitalizations at both St. Lukes and Columbia in the area for other issues and I believe that Froetdert is right near the top. Definately surpassed the care I had at Columbia and St. Lukes was about the same.
Comments: The hospital was very efficient, they knew exactly what they were doing. The care was great, the nursing staff very caring and attentive (the night nurse a little less so, but the aide on that shift more than made up for it). The only "problem" I had, which I hesitiate to even call a problem, was that there wasn't a room ready for me, so I was in recovery for a little extra time. However, I was comfortable, my pain was kept controlled, and the nurse taking care of me was wonderful and kept me informed, as well as keeping my family informed and eventually just brought them into recovery so they could see me.

Comments: There was only one nurse (the day nurse) that I could have done without and had replaced. I felt she was very disorganized and couldn't handle her job well. Always she was late with my pain meds and took forever to answer my calls. She is why I gave my overall rating GOOD and not Excellent.
