How Selected: I am involved in implementing a new bariatric surgical program as director. We began the program in August, though bariatric surgery was performed here previously. We now have a new surgeon associated with the program. I did not have surgery here.
Competitors: The atmosphere here is one of friendliness since the sirst day I came to inquire about the position. This is a small community based facility where the employees seem happy.
Comments: I would come here!

How Selected: This hospital was closest to my family and my home. It is also the only place Dr. Kole did open RYN. I chose to have my surgery here because of opinions I read online.
Comments: I have poor ratings for Garden City Hospital. I think they are over booked, understaffed, their patient ratio is 8 to 1. You cannot give good care and be in 8 places at the same time with only 1 aide helping you! They didn't bathe me, make sure I had plenty of ice and water; I had to ask for my sheets to be changed after they were soaked in blood for 2 days. They did not come in and clean my room daily. When you needed something it might be a few minutes before they came to see what you needed, but it was over an hour when they returned, (empty handed) asking what it was you needed. I had only one good quality nurse named George! The rest need to go back to school for basic skills.

Comments: I have to say once again GCH staff showed how compassionate, caring, and attentive they were to my needs. I never had to wait for anything that I requested. Thank you GCH staff for a job well done. Lillian Alexander

How Selected: It was the closest to my home and I chose it out of convience.
Comments: The Drs. were terrific but the nursing staff not so much so. The first time you would meet a nurse she was nice the second time it seemed they had better things to do. I would have to push the call button because they would let the fluids or pain med iv bags run out and the monitor would be beeping and they would ignore it. Then my last day there they wanted to discharge me in the morning and I told them I did not have a ride until 4 pm well you would think this was the worst inconvience to them. The one nurse of duty said at least 10 times when is room 6b going home. I felt like saying hey just give me my walking papers and I will wait down in the lobby if its so inconvient to you. Rude and they did not want to do any work after there first rounds. The could do with alot less nurses if they had ones that cared. I will not be going back to gardencity hospital because of the nursing staff

How Selected: This was the closest hospital to me that the CORI centers worked with. Plus, my surgeon felt very comfortable with it.
Comments: The people there were very friendly (for the most part). I did have issues with the amount of time it took someone to respond to me. Luckily, I had a family member with me pretty much at all times.

Competitors: i would say very poor it was really dirty at Garden City hospital.
Comments: I would not recomend this hospital. very dirty no one cleaned or changed my sheets they did bring me wash cloths and new dresses daily so i could wash myself. The staff had to empty my roommate cath bag and left pee dripping in the bathroom.i had my cath taken out the first day so going to the bath room was just nasty

Comments: The nursing staff has something to be desired. My first night after surgery was good but after that it went down hill. The day after surgery I asked to get up and walk at 11am. The nurse said ok and she would be with me in a min. Well that min turned into an hour so I asked again and was told just a min. That min turned into another hour. Finally at 3pm I asked and was able to get someone in there to get me up and walking. My IV had been empty for 2 hours and was beeping and I couldn't even get someone in to change the bag. The second night in the hospital I woke in pain so called the nurse she told me to push my button and I told her I did and it didn't help. She checked out my epidural and said it was fine and gave me a morphine shot through the IV. Nothing was relieving the pain so she just said it was probably gas and I needed to walk. When the day shift came on I told Pat my nurse about what had been happening and she checked my epidural and it was not even in and checked my IV site and the IV site was blown. By then my pain was at a 10+. She contacted the doctor and got orders to give me oral morphine and then diluded injections. Thanks Pat for taking such good care. By the next morning I was feeling fine and my pain level was down to a 3-4. Other than the nursing staff I had a good experience with Garden City.

Comments: The staff was caring, sometimes it took awhile for the nurse to answer the call light. The staff on the midnight shift were great

How Selected: Dr, Sapala's recomendation.
Competitors: Unsure, except I work in a Lansing Hospital and feel it is simply a better facility generally.
Comments: GCOH has not progressed since I quit working there in 1993. I feel the whole facility appears run-down. It kind of made me sad to see this but overall I guess I would rate it a "6"

How Selected: This is one of the two hospitals that the Dr. uses. I chose this of the two because it is small and I hope will give more personel care.
Competitors: Will tell after surgery.

Competitors: There were maybe two nice nurses in the whole place. The rest were horribly rude and nasty and acted as if i were bothering them. When i asked a nurses assistant to help me get up to walk she told me I would have to wait cause she was busy!!!!! The doctors on the other hand were outstanding and very caring, too bad they dont train the rest of the staff to behave that way.
Comments: Unfortunatly because of a horrible experience with most of the staf it threw a bad light on the whole experience even tho there were a few very nice nurses who did their job great.

How Selected: The sugeon performing my bariatric surgery has an association with this hospital.
Competitors: The facilities seem quite good, however, I believe that the some staff need to be better educated regarding bariatric care.
Comments: The morning following my surgery, I was literally frustrated with the lack of response given me by the night nurse and assisting staff. However, the next morning the attending physician and nursing supervisor interviewed me, apologized for the lack of compassion and service, and sought to redeem themselves. I must give this hospital credit for doing just that. I still wish they had not had to redeem themselves - and wish this for future patients.

How Selected: Dr. Sapala just recently started operating out of this hospital... it was selected for me.
Competitors: I have stayed in a few hospitals and thankfully never had a horrible experience. This hospital is on the smallish side compared to Harper Hospital (which is the other hospital Dr. Sapala works out of) but was well equipped. Compared to other hospitals I have stayed in, this ranks well.
Comments: The staff here were friendly and accommodating. My husband didn't want to leave my side and they allowed him to stay with me long after visiting hours (he was quiet and stayed out of everyone's way). On the day I was discharged we had the big blackout in Detroit. We were there for only a couple of hours, but in that time the staff worked very hard to make sure they were prepared for what was to be a long haul! They made their rounds to each patient making sure each was comfortable and calm about the situation. This hospital has a great staff!

How Selected: Dr. Sapala has just moved to seeing paients in this area. He has an office in the medical building that is attached to the hospital. This is fairly new to the hospital so it seemed that they did not have all the little bugs worked out yet. But I definately think once they get accustomed to this type of surgery they will be excellent in all aspects.
