|
Geary Community Hospital is a 92-bed, not-for-profit hospital, located in Junction City, Kansas. Its history spans nearly 90 years and exemplifies quality patient care, constant growth and outstanding leadership. The LivLiteSM program at Geary Community Hospital was the first and is currently one of only a few hospitals in Kansas to perform gastric bypass surgery for the treatment of morbid obesity.
Currently we offer laparoscopic and open Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and LAP-BANDŽ surgical procedures. Our multidisciplinary program is based on a team approach to caring for you. If you desire an effective, permanent solution to obesity related health problems, call Liv LiteSM today.

| i had a doctor appoinment and every chair in the hospital was big for over weight people, so u didn't have to feel like u couldn't fit in the chairs or atleast fight to fit into it. |

Initially because it was the closest to my home.(other than a military hospital) But now that I know this hospital better Id reccomend it to anyone! I beleive God sent me to this hospital!! Its the best!! |

**Note** This review was written in 2003.
This hospital is a relatively small hospital compared to the hospitals where I live. But, they are extremely up to date. I felt very comfortable knowing that if anything went wrong, or if I needed emergency care; this hospital was equipped.
Comments: I haven't had surgery yet, but with having my sister go through it here and having my pre-op here. What I have seen so far is just excellence. Above board quality people, and quality facility. Very caring. What I like is that it isn't a big hospital. So, when you see the staff in the hall or cafeteria they remember you and ask how you are or in my case they asked how my sister was doing. So, I feel extremely comfortable and confident in this hospital.~ Okay, now I have had my surgery. I am still espousing the virtues of this hospital. It is clean, the staff and volunteers are friendly, the gift shop is quaint, and the hospital is just so well equipped with updated equipment. Not to mention that the hospital does cater to the larger person. I've read on this site where a lot of doctors offices don't have scales that go beyond 350. Well, that is ridiculous. They have scales that would weigh anyone I would imagine. They also have oversized wheel chairs and oversized chairs. So, whether you are a patient or a guest they make sure you are comfortable. I highly recommend this hospital for anyone thinking of having the surgery

Geary Community could really show my local hospital a lot!! Not only in the way that they perform certain tests and procedures, but also in the way that they are always polite, answer call lights in a timely manner, and treat you as you should be treated, as a human, not as a practice dummy laying there. |

When I first chose to travel 4 1/2 hours away from home to have my RNY, I was concerned about many issues, they put my fears to rest quickly!! They were wonderful to my husband and family, and even when my family had to come home the nurses would call home for me so I could talk to them. My local hospital would never do anything like that. I would reccomend Geary Community Hospital to anyone that is thinking of having the surgery!! A great group of well trained people!! I consider many of them my angels to this day!! |

ICU was wonderful. The nurses were very helpful and made sure I was comfortable the entire time I was in there. When I went out onto the floor, it seemed as though the nurses were clueless. There was a time when I ran out of pain meds, and it wasn't changed for an hour. They didn't put the leg massagers on me, and they didn't remind to walk very often. They seemed kinda forgetful. |

I have never in my life been or seen another hospital like this one. I would hit my nurse button and they would be in my room. I had my own pain med button, I pushed it when I needed it. If I asked for anything, it was there within minutes. Not only were they on top of it all. They were also very genuinely concerned and sweet and caring nurses. |

I would say that compared to all of the other hospitals that I have ever been in it is the absolute best of them all. |

Every thing was wonderful. The nurses, aides, and support staff were very caring and responsive to my needs. They told my mom who stayed with me that they would provide a cot for her if she wanted to stay in my room during the night and she would be able to stay in the waiting area for ICU when I during my stay there. I have never been treated with such kindness and caring as I was in this hospital. |

I have had several people tell me of experiences in other hospitals where their call button was shut off and never answered or that it took several hours to get pain meds. This never happened at GCH. |

The staff was wonderful, even allowing my young brothers 8 & 10 to come tell me goodbye when I was in ICU and they were getting ready to leave. The nurses were wonderful, very helpful, they really have this hospital set up to handle a lot of bariatric patients, with special beds, chairs, etc. Totally Awesome expierience. |

I had a couple issues with this hospital, we drove a ways to use this hospital, and they would NOT allow my spouse to stay there with me, and I had another bed in my room, that was never used, he was not even allowed to stay in the waiting rooms, I was not really happy with that! Also, I had nurses get snappy with me and also telling me that I could eat sugar and gave me jello with sugar and told me I could eat that and it made me sick. I also had a nurse offer me icecream and then shurbet??? I thought the whole point of having this surgery was to stay away from this stuff and foods with sugar, I dont feel that they were very well trained. I also had a nurse tell me that I didnt need to have the surgery, and asked why I was having it, I told here I met the qualifications of having the surgery and unless she spent time in my shoes, she would not have any idea of what I have gone through. There were a couple other issues, but other than that, most people were very nice in there. |

I work in a much bigger hospital and it was very diffrent. I felt it was run more like a nursing home. Or long term care facility. |

ICU staff was very knowledgeable and great. Most of the nurse were compitent. I had more problems when I got to the floor. Same story as any other hospital though. There is just not enough nurses so they are responsible for to many patients but in a since still not as bad as what I am use to working in this profession. |

The service at this hospital was wonderful. The facilities are good, but the staff is exceptional and responsible for making the stay there something special. |

The hospital experience to me is a combination of facilities and staff. The facilities certainly are sufficient for a comfortable stay, but they do have some age on them. The medical facilities, however, were all first-rate and rather new. In my experience, it was the TREMENDOUS staff that made such a difference. I spent an extra day in ICU, rather than just one night, and those nurses and CNA's were nothing short of angels. They are very attuned to the gastric bypass surgery patient, and extremely attentive to the pain and movement issues. They assisted me in every adventure of walking, and were very supportive of my initial recovery. They asked frequently if I needed anything else, and whether or not they were meeting my expectations.
My experience out on the floor, 3rd floor, was just as good. I was moved out of ICU on the Friday of Labor Day weekend; usually a holiday weekend means scarce attention. I never had the same nurse twice, and every one of those wonderful ladies(yes, mine were all women) was knowledgeable, extremely competent, answered my questions, communicated ideas to help me heal or remain healthy once I went home, was caring, and checked on me regularly without me asking for help. And every one of them in some way asked for my impression of their care and how they could improve. The CNA's were also very nice, competent, and concerned about my care. These people actually enjoy working as part of the bariatric team, they seem to be proud of what they do, and want to do it better than anywhere else. And it shows! |

Compared to other hospitals I have stayed at I felt the professionals I dealt with were outstanding. They all really cared about me and my well being. They were compassionate, caring, understanding and very friendly. I would choose Geary Hospital again for any surgery. |

This hospital, the nursing staff and the Doctors' were fantastic! The only non-Excellent rating above is only because as a post-op, I hurt so bad there was no way I could get rest. I was in a two person room but it was quiet enough that I was the only one in the room. The staff came in and removed the other bed and brought in some more chairs for visitors and a RECLINER that elevated up so I didn't have to sit down then it was able to slowly lower with me! That recliner was a God send. I'm only 5 ft 2 and getting into the beds and getting out of them are very painful when you have stitches from just between you boobs to past your belly-button. The recliner was the only truly restful sleep! |

This hospital is a relatively small hospital compared to the hospitals where I live. But, they are extremely up to date. I felt very comfortable knowing that if anything went wrong, or if I needed emergency care; this hospital was equipped. |

I haven't had surgery yet, but with having my sister go through it here and having my pre-op here. What I have seen so far is just excellence. Above board quality people, and quality facility. Very caring. What I like is that it isn't a big hospital. So, when you see the staff in the hall or cafeteria they remember you and ask how you are or in my case they asked how my sister was doing. So, I feel extremely comfortable and confident in this hospital.~
Okay, now I have had my surgery. I am still espousing the virtues of this hospital. It is clean, the staff and volunteers are friendly, the gift shop is quaint, and the hospital is just so well equipped with updated equipment. Not to mention that the hospital does cater to the larger person. I've read on this site where a lot of doctors offices don't have scales that go beyond 350. Well, that is ridiculous. They have scales that would weigh anyone I would imagine. They also have oversized wheel chairs and oversized chairs. So, whether you are a patient or a guest they make sure you are comfortable. I highly recommend this hospital for anyone thinking of having the surgery. |

As a nurse I noticed a few things they could have done better but the lay person would not notice these. Overall the care was very good. One thing they could improve on is to coordinate their nighttime chores and come in together to get them done instead of waking me up every 30-45 min for each individual chore, ie. vital signs, finger stick blood sugars, assessments, etc. |
