|

- Dr. Juliet Lee, MD
For physician bios, types of bariatric surgeries, and accepted insurance plans please visit GW Hospital Bariatric Surgeons.
Considering Gastric Bypass Surgery?
To qualify for gastric bypass surgery, you must meet the following criteria:
- 100 lbs over ideal weight or a BMI of more than 40, with or without co-morbid conditions.
- A BMI between 35 and 40 may also qualify with associated co-morbid conditions such as high blood pressure, sleep apnea, heart disease or diabetes.
- Previous weight loss efforts including medically supervised diet plans, exercise and behavioral modification programs have been unsuccessful.
- Understand and be committed to the behavioral changes that will be required after surgery.
|
Take the First Step
To get started we suggest scheduling an appointment for a surgical consultation with one of our bariatric surgeons. To find about more about surgeons, the procedures they perform and accepted insurance plans, please visit Gastric Bypass Surgeons.
Or, simply call the GW Physician Referral Service and let us assist you in scheduling your first appointment. Call 1-888-4GW-DOCS.
Which Type of Weight-Loss Surgery is Right for You?
The choice of which type of weight-loss surgery to have is an important and serious decision. While the majority of patients who undergo these procedures are very successful, no procedure is perfect. We encourage you to discuss the benefits and risks of each type of surgery in detail with your surgeon.
Roux-en-Y Procedure (Gastric Bypass)
Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Surgery
Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band
What Results Can You Expect?
Weight loss surgery has given many individuals a new lease on life. The amount of weight you lose will depend on the type of surgical procedure you have done and how committed you are to the required lifestyle changes, including exercise and eating habits. Your age, sex and initial weight at the time of surgery may also affect surgical outcomes.
Even if the ideal weight is not reached, co-morbid medical problems are improved in most cases. Many patients find they no longer need medications for diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, arthritis and back pain. Most patients report an increase in self-esteem and self-confidence and an improvement in their overall quality of life.

I haven't stayed overnight but in one other hospital which was GBMC and I was treated wonderful there. |
| Comments: |
Nursing staff was indescribable, my stay was a horrific expererience that I hope I never have to deal with again in my lifetime. The nursing staff was imcompassionate, unsympathetic, and lacked in many areas. There was a great lack of communciation between nursing/residents and surgeon during post-op care. I wouldnt recommend this hospital to anyone. |

| Comments: |
I had a blood clot in my left lung early 2007. The change in anti-coagulation meds was a guessing game causing a longer stay than normal. Due to my unique situation, I had a lot of student doctors visiting me. I was repeating my story multiple times per day, even when I had visitors. It was hard to tell the first week who the ACTUAL doctor was reviewing my case. I had a semi-private room which I had to share with a very rude, disrespectful, elderly man. The nursing staff disregarded my repeat requests to be moved to a different room during my stay. This is definitely a hospital to be careful with if you are not lucid - nurses almost gave me incorrect medications on a few occasions and in many cases they didn't have the proper orders from the doctor. Had I not been lucid, my stay would have been AT LEAST 2 days longer than it already was because of incorrect dosages being given to me. They did not have a CT machine that could handle my weight which caused a delay in official diagnosis as well.
On a positive note, once I started having repeat visits from the medical staff (same doctors & nurses), I felt a great sense of comfort from their care. One of the doctors did a lot of research on my behalf of my unique case. One of the residents even remembered me a few months later according to one of my co-workers when they met her at random. |

Facility is nice... Operating experience good except that when in Recovery, they could not locate IV equip to start pain meds for about 25 minutes... I was in a lot of pain for those few minutes. On the unit, nurse staffing was very short - trying to get help to go to bathroom etc was not great. Two hours went by after calling for nurse several times and finally, I unplugged my own equip and made it to the bathroom myself. I recommend having family or friend stay overnight with you if possible in case you need help. |

| GWU Hospital is the only facility at which Kaiser patients in the DC-Baltimore area may have LRNY surgery. |
| Competitors: |
The NEW GWU Hospital is cleaner than others. However, the parking situation is horrible which makes getting to and from the hospital an issue. |
| Comments: |
The hospital staff was generally accommodating and met my needs adequately. However, the hospital transport (wheelchair at release) was nonexistent -- I had to walk downstairs to meet my ride (as he has nowhere to park close-by). |

This was overall a great hospital. My only complaints are #1 I was in the recovery room for over 4hrs because there were no beds. #2 My upper GI Test on Saturday was supposed to be in the morning and I didn't have it until 5pm because the nurses on staff weren't communicating with that department. #3 The day time nurses were not that responsive when I called and not all together nice. This was my first hospital stay ever and for the most part it was a good experience. |

Actually the hospital staff especially all the nurses and the tech were sooooooooooo good to me. I think I will try to take them something the next time I am over there. They were just the best. The only trouble we had was in recovery. I was there forever 10:30 am- 7 pm because they claimed to be "cleaning" the room then we had one and they gave it to this man instead and then I had to wait a few more hours for yet another room to be cleaned. Once I finally arrived in my room it was very nice experience. |

I've never been to any other hospital in this area...
Every other aspect of my experience with the hospital was great, pre admissions, pre-op blood work, the bariatric class...all wonderful, but surgery day they didn't have a gown to fit me at first, and my husband told me when they assigned my room and he went up to check where it was, it was filthy and smelled like urine. He had to bark at a couple of people to clean it before I came up...and my husband is not a barker... Other than that, I was in so much of a funk, I don't remember much. they did however, treat my husband well, because he wasn't supposed to be allowed to stay the night, and they let him and even brought a day bed into the room. So I was greatful. The nurses were also young, but very nice and helpful. |

I liked the baricatric wing and office on the same wing. Scale was available in our section. All WLS patients got to know each other. |

Everyone I met at this hospital - from pre-surgical testing to the last day after the operation - was so pleasant and kind. They actually made the surgery a good experience. |

I was in Fairfax Hospital 3 years ago, and I'd say GWU is every bit the excellent hospital Fairfax is, if not more so. |

I could not have been happier with my experience at this hospital. I had read negative reviews and am mystified because I found everything and everyone wonderful. The nursing staff, drs and residents, all were extremely responsive and always had a smile on their face. They all made my experience there very positive. The hospital could use a better parking situation as it costs $12 a day to park--not likely to attract visitors! Other than that I don't have one complaint. |

Even though there was supposed to be a Bariatric unit, the staff/nurses never offered me a drop of water, or help in any way.
For meals I was fed full-sugar items -- even after requesting diet items.
I was also told to take a shower when I shouldn't have been allowed. Luckily, the surgeon's PA put a stop to it.
VERY POOR nurse and nutrition. |

Excellent Intensive Care and Post Op care. Very responsive. Poor care on the floor. Understaffed and way undermotivated. Two dedicated aids made the short stay bearable but I couldn't wait to get out. Note to CPAP users: Their machine didn't have a humuidifier. At high pressure settings, this is extremely uncomfortable! |
