|

Considering Gastric Bypass Surgery?
To qualify for gastric bypass surgery, you must meet the following criteria:
- 100 lbs over ideal weight or a BMI of more than 40, with or without co-morbid conditions.
- A BMI between 35 and 40 may also qualify with associated co-morbid conditions such as high blood pressure, sleep apnea, heart disease or diabetes.
- Previous weight loss efforts including medically supervised diet plans, exercise and behavioral modification programs have been unsuccessful.
- Understand and be committed to the behavioral changes that will be required after surgery.
|
Take the First Step
To get started we suggest scheduling an appointment for a surgical consultation with one of our bariatric surgeons. To find about more about surgeons, the procedures they perform and accepted insurance plans, please visit Gastric Bypass Surgeons.
Or, simply call the GW Physician Referral Service and let us assist you in scheduling your first appointment. Call 1-888-4GW-DOCS.
Which Type of Weight-Loss Surgery is Right for You?
The choice of which type of weight-loss surgery to have is an important and serious decision. While the majority of patients who undergo these procedures are very successful, no procedure is perfect. We encourage you to discuss the benefits and risks of each type of surgery in detail with your surgeon.
Roux-en-Y Procedure (Gastric Bypass)
Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Surgery
Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band
What Results Can You Expect?
Weight loss surgery has given many individuals a new lease on life. The amount of weight you lose will depend on the type of surgical procedure you have done and how committed you are to the required lifestyle changes, including exercise and eating habits. Your age, sex and initial weight at the time of surgery may also affect surgical outcomes.
Even if the ideal weight is not reached, co-morbid medical problems are improved in most cases. Many patients find they no longer need medications for diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, arthritis and back pain. Most patients report an increase in self-esteem and self-confidence and an improvement in their overall quality of life.

| Comments: |
Nursing staff was indescribable, my stay was a horrific expererience that I hope I never have to deal with again in my lifetime. The nursing staff was imcompassionate, unsympathetic, and lacked in many areas. There was a great lack of communciation between nursing/residents and surgeon during post-op care. I wouldnt recommend this hospital to anyone. |

| Comments: |
I had a blood clot in my left lung early 2007. The change in anti-coagulation meds was a guessing game causing a longer stay than normal. Due to my unique situation, I had a lot of student doctors visiting me. I was repeating my story multiple times per day, even when I had visitors. It was hard to tell the first week who the ACTUAL doctor was reviewing my case. I had a semi-private room which I had to share with a very rude, disrespectful, elderly man. The nursing staff disregarded my repeat requests to be moved to a different room during my stay. This is definitely a hospital to be careful with if you are not lucid - nurses almost gave me incorrect medications on a few occasions and in many cases they didn't have the proper orders from the doctor. Had I not been lucid, my stay would have been AT LEAST 2 days longer than it already was because of incorrect dosages being given to me. They did not have a CT machine that could handle my weight which caused a delay in official diagnosis as well.
On a positive note, once I started having repeat visits from the medical staff (same doctors & nurses), I felt a great sense of comfort from their care. One of the doctors did a lot of research on my behalf of my unique case. One of the residents even remembered me a few months later according to one of my co-workers when they met her at random. |

Facility is nice... Operating experience good except that when in Recovery, they could not locate IV equip to start pain meds for about 25 minutes... I was in a lot of pain for those few minutes. On the unit, nurse staffing was very short - trying to get help to go to bathroom etc was not great. Two hours went by after calling for nurse several times and finally, I unplugged my own equip and made it to the bathroom myself. I recommend having family or friend stay overnight with you if possible in case you need help. |

This was overall a great hospital. My only complaints are #1 I was in the recovery room for over 4hrs because there were no beds. #2 My upper GI Test on Saturday was supposed to be in the morning and I didn't have it until 5pm because the nurses on staff weren't communicating with that department. #3 The day time nurses were not that responsive when I called and not all together nice. This was my first hospital stay ever and for the most part it was a good experience. |

Actually the hospital staff especially all the nurses and the tech were sooooooooooo good to me. I think I will try to take them something the next time I am over there. They were just the best. The only trouble we had was in recovery. I was there forever 10:30 am- 7 pm because they claimed to be "cleaning" the room then we had one and they gave it to this man instead and then I had to wait a few more hours for yet another room to be cleaned. Once I finally arrived in my room it was very nice experience. |

I've never been to any other hospital in this area...
Every other aspect of my experience with the hospital was great, pre admissions, pre-op blood work, the bariatric class...all wonderful, but surgery day they didn't have a gown to fit me at first, and my husband told me when they assigned my room and he went up to check where it was, it was filthy and smelled like urine. He had to bark at a couple of people to clean it before I came up...and my husband is not a barker... Other than that, I was in so much of a funk, I don't remember much. they did however, treat my husband well, because he wasn't supposed to be allowed to stay the night, and they let him and even brought a day bed into the room. So I was greatful. The nurses were also young, but very nice and helpful. |

I could not have been happier with my experience at this hospital. I had read negative reviews and am mystified because I found everything and everyone wonderful. The nursing staff, drs and residents, all were extremely responsive and always had a smile on their face. They all made my experience there very positive. The hospital could use a better parking situation as it costs $12 a day to park--not likely to attract visitors! Other than that I don't have one complaint. |

For meals I was fed full-sugar items -- even after requesting diet items.
I was also told to take a shower when I shouldn't have been allowed. Luckily, the surgeon's PA put a stop to it.
VERY POOR nurse and nutrition. |

I did feel comfortable in the hospital, had a private room, private bath (very important!), tv, laptop (with internet access and DVD's). The nurses were polite, and responded quickly to any questions or concerns that I had. There was an issue where my fiance who was with me couldn't get home that day, and the assisting nurses agreed that he could stay in my room that night, past visiting hours. This was very courteous, and I appreciated their kindness. |

Staff in recovery and ICU were absolutely outstanding; however, I believe they do not have sufficient staff on the floor to be responsive to patients needs. Fortunately, I did not have to stay very long. Note: If you use c-pap/bi-pap, BRING YOUR OWN! The hospital machine is clunky, the mask is uncomfortable, and it does not have a humidifier. At high pressure settings, dry air will cause exteme discomfort and poor sleep. |

| Comments: |
GW needs more nursing staff, and more room. I was in recovery longer than necessary because there were no beds in ICU; then, I was in ICU longer than necessary because there were no beds on 5. No one helped me walk around until my third day in the hospital. It was tough to even get water. Make sure you have someone with you - the nurses are far too overstretched to help with day to day things. |

I think that the quality of care from the nurses was excellant. They were sympithetic and caring even though I was very "grouchy". They were also understanding of weight issues. (never did they try to give me a small person's gown like Potomic Hospital and INOVA Fairfax Hospital have). The doctor's/ surgeon's team of people where very attentive, (as I expected and hoped for sence the are a teaching hospital). I've heard of nightmares of people waking up screaming. I had my surgery 11/12/04 (friday) and I don't remember much of that day at all, so I count that as a blessing. |

It is a good clean hospital. The hospital is very big and therefore very busy. Although it is large, I did not have any problems with the staff. I was concerned at first about the size and how the nursing and doctor staff would treat the patients. Since it is a teaching institution, when my doctor was not checking on me, his staff did.
|
| Comments: |
Overall the staff was very helpful and friendly. Whenever I had a question or concern, they were more than helpful. Whenever I needed assistance, I had no problems getting assistance. They made my short stay enjoyable.
The only disadvantage of using this hospital is the parking. It is best to use the Metro system. Parking is hard to find and is expensive. You only get 1 free parking space the day of your surgery after that you are on your own. However, when you use the Metro system, it stops right beside the hospital. |

Only have one other experience at my county's hospital - this does not compare favorably. |
| Comments: |
I had one day in the hospital without family members - and it was just terrible. I was placed in ICU after my surgery due to a couple of high risk factors. But, despite my discomfort, it was clear that I was too well for the ICU folks. I felt dismissed and - while not quite neglected - nearly so. And, I later found out that the nursing staff yelled patient weights to eachother. So much for privacy and dignity.
Took far too long for a bed to clear in the regular ward, but finally was moved there Wednesday evening (surgery was Tuesday morning). I thought care would improve there.
It did not. No one took the time to attend to my human needs: the bed's comfort, dealing with congestion while using a CPAP machine, getting a simple cup of water. It took my surgeon - on Thursday - to get me out of bed, and track down a nurse to help walk me around - something that should have happened the day before.
Once out of bed, I was able to get my own water, and walk around my room on my own - I didn't get the walk around the hallway until yet another hour later.
I may have been the victim of the nursing shortage - I believe that played a part. I will never know if the type of surgery I had played any part in my treatment. I hope not, but have been obese long enough to know that even medical staff can be incredibly insensitive to obese patients.
I hope never to have to return to GW again. |

The nursing staff, once in my own room was a terrible experience. I listened to nurses fight in the hallways, to my IV machine "bing-bing-bing" for 20 minutes while I had a migraine. The dietition forgot to feed me twice and the nurses disconnected my pain and told me I had to make it last the four hours! I found out later that I was allowed meds whenever necessary. Out of the 20+ nurses that attented to me, only three were kind hearted and consoderate. Get this! I called out to the nursing station that my IV machine was ringing again and to pls. send someone to reset and put on a new bag. Well, the nurse said "ok I'll send your nurse." My nurse was out to lunch and he never tried to find who was filling in for her and with an awful morephine migraine I listened to the machine ringing next to my head for 22 LONG minutes. When she got there I was crying and she was apologizing and saying I was out to lunch. I yelled back, "and no one knew who was feeling in?" I just continued to cry and tell her this who thing has been a bad experience. Julia, Lisa and Brenda were the only nurses that gave a crap. I thank God that I at least had them, otherwise I may have beeb driven insane or into poor health. |

The pre-op stuff went great, everyone was very helpful and informative. The pre-op (the morning of surgery) was terrif as well. The post-op and recovery staff were great and kept my family informed. |

The rooms were extremly clean and the staff did an excellent job of keeping it that way. Evertime I would get up to sit in a chair, someone would come in and change bed linens. The bathroom was huge! The room had plenty of chairs for visitors and even arranged for a bed to be in my room for my husband to stay the night. The staff all were very nice, patient, and helpful. I give GW a 10! |

The nurses would ignore the call bell for ...HOURS...I kid you not...and they would not bring my pain medication on time. A resident doctor also made my stay very unpleasant when I was there for nausea and vomiting he insisted I take Phenergan round the clock in order to get out sooner. | I had no chaice-this is where Dr. Afram performs his surgery. |
| Comments: |
I stayed at GWU Hospital for 3 days after my surgery, and it was better than I expected. First, they have an entire unit just for Dr. Afram's WLS patients. The nurses on the unit were sweet, repsonsive, and sensitive. I was also given my own room, which I never expected. I thought that was great, because I was able to have total privacy whenever I wanted. I thought the surgical center staff was very senstive and caring, and answered every question I had, and allowed me to feel very comfortable even though I was quite nervous, both in the pre-op room and even when I was wheeled into the operating room-they all made me feel comfortable, so I "went to sleep" with the feeling that I would be very well taken care of. The recovery room staff was attentive and friendly. Overall, I would feel very comfortable going back to GW if I ever had to have any other kind of surgery. |

I wouldn't. They may indeed have a new facility, but an edifice is not nearly as important as the quality of care. |
| Comments: |
I gave this hospital such poor ratings NOT because of surgery I had myself, but for my mother's surgery. She was of course heavily medicated and thus not fully aware of what was or was NOT going on. I had to ASK them to do basic things such as assist my mother with bathing ( I did this MYSELF), assist her with getting to the bathroom (had to do this too), giving her water/ice, I could go on and on. |

Overall, I was very disappointed with my stay at GW. Although Dr. Lin and Denise were wonderful, the residents and the nurses were sub par. My first day post-op, I had an infection with my IV and it took over 3 hours (imagine no hydration or pain medication) to get a new IV put in. No one ever gave me a binder or the leg massaging boots....everything had to be requested. I experienced terrible headaches which the residents attributed to the morphine, but no one offered another type of pain killer. We had to ask. Luckily, my mother is a nurse, so she was able to run the show, but without her, I would have been in big trouble. |

My biggest issue was that my surgery was pushed from 9:15 to 11:00 and nobody came to tell me until after 9:30. Also, after surgery, I was wheeled into my room in an ICU bed.....which was narrow and extremely uncomfortable....and I had to ask for a bariatric bed 2 days after surgery. Also, the communication between Drs and nurses could have been improved. Nurses kept me in bed due to low blood pressure, and the team of Dr's were not happy with that. |

| Comments: |
The staff overall were great - only one experience in ICU where I was moaning less than 12 hours after surgery, and the nurse reminded me that I "elected" to have this surgery! As if! Other than that - if I had my strength I would have told that woman a thing or two - my only other comments are that sometimes it took a LONG time to get a response after pushing the call button, and the ongoing IV alarms made long time sleep impossible since it often took 10 - 15 minutes for a nurse to respond to the alarm. I understand there is a built in time from when the alarm goes off until the iv bag must be changed - but the alarm ringing in your ear constantly was so annoying! A faster response time would have greatly improved my overall impression. |

The parking fees are terrible! To park for a little over 2 hours, I paid $11.00. The hospital only validates parking on the day of surgery.
Also, as with most hospitals in the United States, the nursing staff is limited.
George Washington University Hospital does take a compassionate stance towards obese patients. However, the patient MUST make sure that they are accomodated. I had to ask for a special bed on the day of surgery and on several ocassions had to reiterate the fact that I wanted a larger wheel chair. But again, the staff was very compassionate. |

Overall, I had a good stay. I did have some problems with nurses having problems with my epidural at times, but the nurses for the most part were very nice and anytime I asked for anything they were pretty timley. The radiology staff was not very sensitive to my pain and size but the rest of the staff was fine. I had a single room so I had privacy and ususally my door was shut and it was quiet. |

The one thing I liked the most about the hospital was the bed. The bed was a bed, but it also converted electronically to a chair. This is significant considering it enabled me to go from a lying down position to a sitting position at the touch of a button. This enabled me to get in and out of bed with no assistance. |

| This Hospital was chosen by my surgeon. He performs all of his surgeries at the same hospital so that he can keep the control factors the same for each patient. |

I have never been in any other hospitals, but I was very impressed with the beds for overweight patients. The beds were specifically for overweight bariatric patients and were motorized to increase motility and comfort after this surgery. The staff was supportive, although somethings acted like they were tired of coming to your beck-and-call. There was not too much privacy, as I shared a room with another bariatric patient that had the same surgery just after me. We became friends and it was nice to have someone to talk to as all of the post-opp stuff began to unfold. The hospital provided pain meds whenever asked. If they requested medication was not listed on our chart, they simply called my doctor to see if it was alright. It ususally took about 2 hours to get a medication approved and into my system. I don't think any hospital is especially restfull. Someone is always waking you up to take vitals or to ask you how you are feeling, but they were very nice about allowing parents to sleep in my hospital room overnight if needed. |

Overall this hospital was pretty good, I would definately go back there again if I needed to be admitted for any reason. Unfortunatley the streets of D.C. are not very smooth and make for an extremely bumpy ride home after being discharged! |

Doctors great, Residents & Interns Great. The nursing staff was the worst I have ever had in my life. If it had not been for my mother who is a nurse in another state hearing how poorly my care was and coming to the rescue I feel my condition would have been far worse. She had to literally fight tooth & nail with the staff to get the me the attention I deserved and was paying for. |

This was the worst hospital I have ever dealt with. While my surgeon and his staff were remarkable. The general hospital staff was horrible. I honestly would not let my dog go here for treatment. Most of the staff was ill mannered poorly trained and could have cared less that for 6 hours after they disconnected my iv because they did'nt have it in my vain and it was swelling up my arm, they did'nt bother to hook it up even though I was pressing the call button every 20 minutes. They did not make sure when giving me my medications that they were mixing and being administered properly. I have whole laundry list of complaints I would be happy to share with you if you are considering this hospital. Again the Doctors were all top notch and I would highly recommend them to anyone just not in this hospital. It is the WORST! |

The nursing staff were not as attentive as I feel they should have been. There were a few excellent nurses, yet the bad ones cast a negative shadow on my hospital stay. |
