How Selected: My insurance would only pay for this Hospital
Competitors: It is further away from the hospital I would be taken to in an emergency. But I would ask to go there the extra drive would be worth the extra care
Comments: I have stayed in a hospital for a long period of time before. It was so horrible. Good sam made me feel taken care of and cared for, not just physicaly but mentaly. They make you feel important. And all the nurses spoke english. that's important when you need to comunicate.

How Selected: Only hospital in the bay area that my surgeon uses that is covered by my insurance

How Selected: Was required by my insurance.
Comments: So far, they ask for your co-pay up front. They called me 3 days before my surgery and demanded $2,515.31 even though they hadn't billed my insurance yet.

How Selected: Its close by my house, its the hospital our family has used for years!
Competitors: its okay, I have had some very very bad experiences there, but this time it was fine.
Comments: If you dont like something, or wish to tell the staff something, make sure they listen to you. I almost lost my 16 yr old daughter, but I did not follow their diagnosis, I made one of my own and refused to medicate her like they wanted me to,it was her appendix and they would not listen to me......I took her home, it burst and I had to rush her back, she made it, but was one sick girl. I will never forget how close we came to loosing our girl. I told them from the first time I took her in, in the am, and they sent me home 2 times, during the day, I took her back in the evening and she had emergency surgery. A mom's intuition is usually right.

How Selected: I had to go to this hospital because it was rated as a Blue Cross Center of Excellence and it was required I have my surgery done at a COE.
Comments: There were major issues with the nursing staff and their promptness. Several were rude as well and I had to tell them when to administer my meds because they wouldn't do it otherwise. It was pretty ridiculous.

How Selected: Only one that my insurance allows.
Competitors: Have no experience with others, new to the area.
Comments: I had severe problems with pain meds and the lack of dispense leading to lung problems because I was breathing shallowly from my pain. When I complained to my doctor who went to the nurse supervisor, the nurse went off on me when I was alone. I rang my buzzer for assistance and would wait more than 30 minutes for assistance in almost every case. Almost always had to ring 2-4 and was often not even acknowledged.

How Selected: COE by Blue Cross
Competitors: Very noisy. They have a tlaking medication cart that talks loud every time it's unplugged to move. That was very distrubing doing the evening.
Comments: The hospital was VERY noisy. Lights were dimmed at night and staff talked up and down the hall. The care was great. The beds were awful and not very suitable for a large person.

How Selected: I had seen a commercial for Bariatric Surgery and the website lead me to Dr. McKeen.
Competitors: This by far was the best surgical experience I have ever had and my Mother and Step-Father who waited during my surgery and came everyday were also very impressed with the staff, hospital, just everything.
Comments: I think the current Group Leader/Coordinator Dana Schroeder for the Bypass/Lapband meetings does an incredible job supporting all patients before, during and after surgery. She wants success for everyone. Dana is a priceless supporter to my journey with my gastric bypass. Dr. McKeen is also great with his advice and knowledge so that I have the best experience with this surgery.

How Selected: BLUE CROSS APPROVED CENTER OF EXPERTISE.
Competitors: NO COMPARISON WITH THE NURSING STAFF I HAVE HAD AT OTHER HOSPITALS.
Comments: I HAD A GREAT DR., MY ANESTHESIOLOGIST WAS THE BEST I'VE EVER HAD,THE RECOVERY ROOM STAFF WAS FINE. DANA, THE BARIATRIC COORDINATOR WAS A GREAT HELP AND COMFORT AND I HAD A PRIVATE ROOM. THAT'S ABOUT IT. THE NURSING STAFF WAS NOT SENSITIVE TO THE NEEDS OF AN OVER WEIGHT PERSON. THEY HAD TO GO GET ME A LARGER GOWN. THEY DID NOT RESPOND FOR 15 MINUTES WHEN I RANG FOR THE NURSE. I NEEDED TO GO TO THE BATHROOM. THEY SHOVED ME ON A BED PAN WHICH I SAT ON FOR 45 MINUTES BEFORE ANYONE CAME IN TO GET IT. THEY NEVER GAVE ME FRESH SHEETS-JUST PUT A PAD DOWN. I ASKED THE NURSE IF THEY WERE SHORT HANDED AND SHE SAID NO-1 NURSE FOR EVERY 5 PATIENTS. NO TEAMWORK. NURSES WOULD WALK BY WITHOUT CHECKING THE BEEPING COMING FROM MY EQUIPMENT. THE MOST IMPORTANT INSTRUCTION FROM MY DOCTOR WAS TO WALK, WALK. WALK. BUT THE BATTERY PACK KEPT BEEPING SAYING MY BATTERY WAS DEAD. HAD TO PLUG BACK IN FOR AN HOUR AND TRY AGAIN. I EVIDENTLY DIDN'T LET IT CHARGE ENOUGH AND THE BEEPING STARTED AGAIN. I HAD TO ASK THE NURSE TO CHANGE THE PACK SO I COULD WALK. THE AIDES WERE MUCH MORE ATTENTIVE AND COMPASSIONATE THAN THE NURSES. A NIGHT AND DAY DIFFERENCE IN THE SHIFTS. DAY SHIFT NURSES WERE PLEASANT AND HELPFUL. SWING SHIFT WAS A LITTLE MORE DISTANT AND SEEMED HAVE MORE TO DO THAN PATIENT CARE. AND MY NURSE ON THE NIGHT SHIFT WAS THE WORST I'VE EVER HAD. SHE NEVER BOTHERED TO SAY HI I'M YOUR NURSE ETC. YOU KNOW..THAT HUMAN KINDA INTERACTION. THANK GOD I ONLY HAD TO STAY OVERNITE! VERY DISSAPOINTING THAT BLUE CROSS WOULD MAKE ME GO THIS FAR AWAY FROM HOME TO A HOSPITAL THEY DEEM AS EXPERIENCED WITH WLS. THEY OBVIOUSLY HAVE A DIFFERENT CRITERIA THAN PATIENT CARE. WONDER WHAT THAT COULD BE????

How Selected: I get bored easily, so just being in the hospital made it hard for me to sleep. It had nothing to do with the staff, I just can't lay still. My family was able to see me anytime and nothing was ever said. Most likely it was because my 11 and 14 year old sons were respectful and considerate of staff, and they didn't get in the way.
Competitors: I've only been in two other hospitals. One was a surgery center for surgery on a deviated septum and and it was an in and out. The staff was very nice. In the other hospital, I've only been in the ER (too much before my surgery) and they are all good people. I know a lot of the ER staff on a first name basis because of my previous job (Police Officer) so I was there a lot during my work.
Comments: I was treated with empathy, but some of the staff did seem rushed at times. I did talk with some specialists (physical therapy, occ therapy) that I didn't think I needed, and my insurance was billed a lot for this. I don't think it was necessary, but then again I'm not the expert in this field, I was a patient.

How Selected: Went to ER due to complications from RNY byspass surgery. Was admitted because problem could not be diagnised by ER dept.
Competitors: At the bottom of the list.
Comments: Doctors and staff inadequately trained in needs of overweight patients. Waited 2 days for referral to GI or specialist or bariatric surgeon before demanding a discharge. Radiologist was unfamilar with RNY and misread the CT scan. Admitting doctor was unaware the hospital had a bariatric specialty and delayed making additional referrals. Would recommend staying home rather than going to this hospital.
