How Selected: My surgeon is there and it's closer to my house compared to the other ones she works with.

How Selected: It was the hospital the insurance company would pay for.
Competitors: Average. Nursing was overstaffed. My call bell was on for 1 hour and 40 minutes and several other times for almost an hour before I could get help.
Comments: They need to train nurses better about the surgery and have more staff available.

How Selected: It was connected to the Legact Obeisty Institute here in Portland, Oregon.
Competitors: The BEST HOSPITAL that I have ever had treatment from!
Comments: The RN's in the Bariatric Short Stay Unit are one of finest that I have seen ever! - I have my surgery this past 08/27/2008 and since then (two days later), I have had three phone calls to check on my status and how I was doing/feeling. EXCELLENT CARE!!!!!!

How Selected: My insurance required a Center of Excellence and they had the first available information class. I liked what was presented and made my decision that evening
Competitors: Far superior in service to both the patient and the family. Very kind to me and informed my husband every step of the process. He did not feel like he was forgotten, as has been the case with my other hospital stay.
Comments: If this is a choice on your insurance I would certainly choose this facility. Excellent people and processes.

Competitors: I've stayed in 4 other local hospitals for different needs and this one was by far the worst!
Comments: Very loud, hard to relax/sleep. No communication between staff. No personal attention (and I'm a private person) I had to ask for everything and didn't feel like it was a pleasure from anyone to bring me anything I needed, not wanted but needed. Very disappointing post surgery treatment.

How Selected: It is where my surgeon performs surgery.
Competitors: Great. It has a very good reputation.
Comments: Since my surgery, I have found hundreds of hospitals that charge less than Good Sam does for this procedure. They have a bundle cost- that included an overnight stay, but I did not stay overnight and was charged the same. Obviously the cost should be re-calculated. Thus I found the value to be poor as I think they overcharge.

How Selected: I selected my surgeon, and this is where they practice..I had also heard alot of good things about their bariatric program, and I was not disappointed.
Competitors: I feel they compare very well.
Comments: the only bad thinhg that happened was my IV pulled out of the vein, and it wasnt discovered until my arm was twice the size as the other one....i went home 15 # heavier than I went in!

How Selected: by internet and a co;worker of my husbands had told me about legacy good samaritan, she had hers there as well.
Competitors: legacy good samaritan is wonderful .i wish the other hospital would have a pre-op meeting at hospital with you prior to surgery to do all paperwork and blood work. it really help on stress load on surgery day!
Comments: legacy good samaritan is wonderful. my husband slept in recliner in my room the whole time and they were supportive of it and made him feel welcomed! its clean and the staff is friendly and wonderful!

How Selected: Insurance covered it trough them OR OHSU- I THOUGHT I was choosing the better hospital
Competitors: If there was a -10- they would get it- WILLAMETTE falls was always my favorite- and stiill is to his day
Comments: POOR patient care- DR JAN was awesome- but the facilty was horrable- NOT TO MENTION my surgery was scheduled at 930- and didnt go into surgery until 1230

How Selected: The doctors that spoke at a local seminar did their work thru this hospital.
Comments: Was very pleased with my short stay there. Wasn't real happy with the shared room after being told I'd have a room of my own, but was told they were extremely full and doing a lot of remodeling.

How Selected: I picked the very Best Dr I could find (dr. Emma Patterson) and this hospital was her choice. I felt confident that she knew what she was talking about.
Competitors: I have been in Emmanual and that was totally neg. experience! Good Sam was Great!

How Selected: Two hospitals in my city are approved by my insurance company, and I work at one, so I chose the other for surgery (for privacy reasons).

How Selected: Dr. Emma Patterson works there.
Competitors: Lousy. When I had my first surgery in SF, there was a staff person checking on me constantly. They got me up and helped me to the BR, made me get up and out for walks (with assistance)
Comments: Very disappointed. I had my call light on for 20 minutes waiting for someone to help me to the BR. Nobody came. They would not allow me any fluid until I had some test done to check the band for leakage. The problem was, I didn't get to have the test until the next day! I was hungry and so thirsty. It was an awful experience and I hope to never have to go there again.

How Selected: My physician and insurance company selected this hospital but I was very pleased.
Competitors: This was the better choice regarding overweight patient care.

How Selected: I had done some research, and felt this hospital, and the whole process of the bariatric surgery was more indepth, and thourough.
Competitors: good sam puts my local hospital to shame
Comments: they are very professional, caring, dedicated. and never seem too busy. if you have that "Im lost" look, they are so willing to stop and help, and literally take you to where your trying to find, not just point in you the direction.

How Selected: It was the only hospital that I could go to get the surgery procedure done at.
Competitors: It is better then I local hospital that I have been to. The staff were considerate of my needs.
Comments: I enjoyed that staff would let me walk around as much as I wanted and would leave me alone to sleep in my room if I asked. They did not constantly come into to my room.

Competitors: I don't know any other hospital's in this area. I'm from out of town.

How Selected: Surgeon is located and operates only at this hospital.
Comments: Very respectful and understanding staff. Hospital is renovating surgical floor to include a Bariatric Unit for post-ops which is to open in 10/05.

Competitors: This is much better, from the information that I have.
Comments: My experience was better than I could have imagined. I have not one complaint. The staff was attentive, pleasing and fun to be around. They treated me with the upmost respect and catered to my every whim. I recommend this hospital to everyone!

How Selected: This is where my surgeon operates.
Competitors: It's a good hospital, but I don't have anything to compare it to.
Comments: When I first woke up, I was in a lot of pain and the morphine wasn't helping (or the pump was broken). Then they doubled my dose, still no help at all. Finally they put me on new meds, but it took them 2 hours until they believed me about the pain. I was given a roomie on day 2 who had loud visitors, several at one time, there was no knocks or anything when people would come in. The staff were very freindly but I got almost no good sleep because my IV machine kept making noises and I am a light sleeper.

Competitors: i found that this hospital kept me informed at all times on a dry eraser board who my my attending nurse and their assistant and also what our goals were for that day. It made it very helpful for me to see that vs trying to remember it all.

Competitors: I think Good Sam went above and beyond...I was attended to for every need, they made the whole process so much easier.

Comments: Developed bed sores from poor bedding, nurses didn't make sure the call button was within reach.

How Selected: I did not select this hospital. My insurance required my surgery be done at Good Samaritan.

Comments: The staff and the knowledge of the staff was very top notch. There was a precision with which they carried out the tasks needing to be done to the point it was very smooth. I felt the staff was very competent as well as congnicent of my needs and others.
