How Selected: Is the hospital my surgeon is affiliated with.
Competitors: I've had surgery at St. Joseph's in Chicago and Lutheran General in Park Ridge - I felt the staff at Good Shepherd was more attentive than either SJ or LG.
Comments: Overall it was an excellent hospital, and the only reason I didn't mark "Excellent" on the "quiet" is because of course, there is never "quiet" in a hospital. They're always coming every few hours to take your vitals. It's nice to get home to get some actual "quiet". ;-)

How Selected: My HMO selected this hospital for me. It was the only hospital that my HMO for Advocate Health Care participated in.
Competitors: I have been to Good Sam and Christ Hospital in the Chicago land area, which are also part of the Advocate Heath Care groups. Both of these hosptials were much better than Good Shepard, as far as staff was concerned.
Comments: Day Surgery staff was fantastic - much thanks to Julie! Recovery Staff was fantastic - much thanks to Ann who took care of me for 6 hours in recovery while we all waited for my bed assignment. Ann you're the best! Once I got onto the floor, it was very different….The nurses and patient care tech seemed to be way too busy to answer the nurse call light, so thank God that you were able to give yourself your own pain medicate on what they call a “push”. I was in a semi private room, which was nice and quiet. I did have a day nurse named Gail who was AWSOME, and a night nurse named Marta who was very nice. I also had a tech named Bea who was also great, but still it was a slow response to answer the nurse call light…20 min. was the average.

How Selected: i selected this hospital, because it was the hospital that the surgeon uses. Also, I had a friend who recommened both the doctor and hospital..
Competitors: So far! all my pre-testing has been wonderful! Everyone is friendly. I will definetely change my doctors so we could go to Good Shepard. Very professional and caring.
Comments: Clean, organized and friendly.

How Selected: This is the only hospital my surgeon went to.
Competitors: I am a nurse and work at a hospital that I hope does a much better job of answering call lights and where the staff (mostly the aids/techs) are nicer and more caring and do a better job of helping the patient. The nurses were all very good, some were excellent (esp the night nurses), but some of the aids were downright nasty!
Comments: I am sorry to say I was not impressed.

Competitors: The facilities at this hospital are more modern, and the staff is more understanding and accomodating than any other hospital I've been to.
Comments: I have been to many other hospitals either as a patient or family member of a patient. I was a patient in the stepdown unit here. While other reviewers of this hospital have made negative comments on the privacy of this unit, they should remember that the unit is structured specifically to provide the post-op patients with the extra care and monitoring they need. They succeed at this very well with their unit setup by keeping the patients together and allowing the nursing staff one central area to cover. When needed there was always a nurse only a few seconds away.

How Selected: MY surgeon is affiliated with this hospital
Comments: Overall, I was impressed with the hospital staff. The nurses in the ICU (where I was for nine days) were all wonderful (with the exception of one) and the nurses during the day on the regular floor were wonderful as well. Some of the nurses at night left a little to be desired, but anyplace will have good and bad nurses. My surgeon is amazing and I would highly recommend him.

Comments: I was in the step down unit which has three patients to a room. All curtains were drawn so there was a little privacy. Although my last night there one of the patients was very annoying and talked loud all night long. I was sure glad to go home. There was a different nurse taking care of you each night, most of whom were very helpful and kind. All in all, it would have been nice to have a private room, but they were all booked up.

How Selected: My surgeon works out of this hospital and it was 100% coverage with my medical insurance.
Competitors: Below average.
Comments: The staff tried real hard but the step down process was horrible. You're in a room with two other people and its very noisy and unrestful. I was in with two men and I felt this was totally inappropriate. Sometimes the other patients left their lights and TV's on all night and it was not peaceful at all. The one nurse seemed a bit overworked. I would suggest a different set-up with more privacy.

Competitors: I think this hospital was better than hospitals that I have been to in the city.
Comments: The staff was very friendly and accomadating. I never had a nurse that I would have termed "Atilla the Hun". I can't say that about other hospitals.
