How Selected: I selected this hospital because of the surgeon, Dr. Moeinolmolki, who I would recommend to anyone.
Competitors: I was so glad that I chose this hospital over Johns Hopkins. Hopkins is a fine medical institution. However, sometimes it is too big to meet the needs of an individual.
Comments: GBMC was clean and pleasant. The staff were very pleasant and approachable. They were attentive and helpful even to my husband. I am considering changing hospitals even though Hopkins is 1/4 of a mile from where I live.

How Selected: That is where my doctor performs surgery.
Competitors: I've never been hospitalized before.
Comments: My only complaint was that they kept me in recovery for over 8 hours because the person in my room was not discharged nor was the room cleaned in a timely manner. Also, I had one nurse who did not speak good English so I could not understand most of what she said. Everything else was fine. Nurses and doctors were all nice. Things just seemed to take a long time to get done.

How Selected: After looking into several Bariatric Surgery Programs in the area I felt that this surgeon was best suited for me and he practices at this hospital
Competitors: This was my first experience with this hospital, I have always heard good things about it but really have no other experience with hospitals in the area.
Comments: All of the nurses from the operating room, recovery, Surgical ICU and Unit 48 were great. I never had to wait for long to have a nurse respond to my needs, they were on top of things. The only issue I had is when I was in the SICU, my surgeon ordered a medication from me that I take regularly at home to be given to me daily, i was in the SICU for 10 days and was only given it once, not sure if it was a lack of communication or what, but my surgeon was very upset when I told him that I only received it once during my entire hospital stay of 19 days.

Competitors: n/a, this was my first hospitalization.
Comments: Most of the staff was amazing. I particularly would love to call out Cindy Smith, RN and Nick who was a PST. Nick will be doing an externship in Dr. Mo and DVR's office, so hopefully we will all be seeing him. He was so amazingly helpful, and compassionate, and he really knows his stuff. Some of the overnight nurses can't be bothered. But, overall the care was outstanding. The good ones far outnumbered and far out shined any of the less than able or caring ones. I would highly recommend GBMC and Dr. Moein for any patient considering gastric bypass surgery.

Comments: The only real complaint was that the "transport team" moving me from SICU to reg ward first came in with a big wheelchair. that would have been fine but there was apparently a bed shortage on the ward I was going to and at the last minute they needed to move me and the bariatric bed I was in: OK fine: until the bed would not fit out the icu door or onto the elevator: thru cramped and sharp cornered hallways. To get the bed on the elevator they literally had to remove two large plastic boxes hanging on the end of the bed: So where do they put the boxes? On the bed between me and the siderails. Here I was 24 hours out of surgury being wheeled in a bed hitting every possible obstacle in the way. I kept saying get me the chair or at least let me get off: I will walk. When we finally got to the right ward the bed would not go thru the door. It took nearly an hour to be moved down 1 level of the hospital. I never did find out exactly what was going on. They were too busy discussing ways of getting the damn bed moved. Very poorly organized move.

Competitors: The hospital is great the daytime nurses are top notch. But there was a night time nurse that is horrible I would never want her again.
Comments: I was ignored at night, the pain med was not given to me until 6 hours later when the morning shift came in. I would hit the call bell someone would answer and the nurse would not come for hours. The daytime nurses and aides were awesome and always there for me but this particular nurse at night in unit 48 is nt recommended for anyone.

How Selected: This hospital is certified by my insurance company as a bariatric clinic. Plus as I later discovered, my surgeon was highly recruited to head this clinic. The staff in Unit 48 are the MOST EXCELLENT!
Competitors: Praise God I haven't been in any of the other local hospitals; therefore, I don't have anything to compare my stay with.
Comments: In regards to the visitation piece, we had a little miscommunication after my surgery. The person in the Family Waiting Room informed my partner that I wouldn't be allowed visitors after the surgery so my partner left. This brought undue stress to me because I'm used to seeing her face after a procedure and she is used to seeing mine. Even now it brings tears to my eyes and reminds me I need to write the hospital administrator about this incident.

Comments: First off let me say that my surgeon was great. I had a few incidences where there was an hour or more wait for someone to respond to my call button. Which really ticked off my family and me. We live a half an hour away from GBMC and my mother made to the hospital before anyone responded to my call button two seperate times. In my personal opinion I would not recommend GBMC to any of my friends or family. But like I said my surgeon was great and I would definetly recommend him to anyone.
