How Selected: Hackensack is a very reputable hospital in the area, all my previous surgeries I've had, not WLS, were all at Valley Hospital, and I felt I needed a change. I like Hackensack being a university, and I feel like the best help is there, and the best of the best.
Competitors: I like Hackensack, I feel that it's more professional, more equipped, and more staffed than some other hospitals in the area. I feel that it is more qualified for better things, and is more advanced.
Comments: My nurses and staff were fantastic, I loved them all. I would recommend them to anyone!!!

How Selected: I was adamant about being treated in this facility, and chose my surgeon partially based on his participation with HUMC.
Competitors: Incomparable. This hospital far exceeds others in my state.
Comments: I was treated like a human, with compassion, understanding and not a single rolled eye. I was told to get up when I shoud have been, I was applauded by the staff in the bariatric unit every time I got up on my own to walk. They were incredibly accomodating to my family. It was five-star treatment. I laughed nearly my entire stay, and they were extra precautious where you'd want them to be. I love the staff. I loved the gorgeous facililities and adored their ability to stick me with needles without me flinching or screaming once. Love, Love, Love HUMC.

How Selected: They are a state designated trauma center. Thus, I knew if there were any problems during the surgery...they could save my ass! ;)
Competitors: It is the best in the county. I had, not only my Gastric Bypass there, but 2 plastic reconstructive surgeries there as well. Within the next two years, I am due for another corrective surgery. When I do have it, it will take place at HUMC. I can't imagine being anywhere else
Comments: I love it. I have never had any problems there. I have had three procedures there. Plus, I go there for any other medical treatment. I even went to HUMC when I was suicidal. They have been nothing short of wonderful to me, in every capacity.

Competitors: This is one of the best hospitals in the NY/NJ/CT/PA aread.
Comments: The hospital appears to be more of a hotel than a hospital (by design). The only minor problem we had was getting extra chairs in the room for visitors - but once solved, we had no problem. Bed was not most comfy, but it was standard hospital fare.

How Selected: My primary care physician said this was the only hospital he would allow me to have weight loss surgery at.
Competitors: I haven't been in other hospitals, except for childbirth, so I really can't compare.
Comments: The hospital lobby is gorgeous, like a Hilton. The floor that I was on was old and needed a lot of work. I was on a weight loss surgery floor and was roomed with a "much older" lady than myself, and she was in diapers, and had to be changed every hour. Lights on, everybody loud, smells galore... where is the Lysol? They had no Lysol! That was gross. The nurses were very nice, overworked and much in demand, I tried to leave them alone, I had my husband and mother with me during my entire stay, so they cared for me.

How Selected: My PCP referred me to doctors at this hospital.
Competitors: This is a beautiful hospital with carpet on the common areas and a beautifull reception area. Well staffed teaching hospital.
Comments: They still have a ways to come for the bariatric patient. After surgery I was placed in an ageing regular hospital bed. It was uncomfortable and I couldn't turn over in it. I asked my surgeon about a bariatric bed and he stated he had asked for one but the hospital policy is you have to be over 400 pounds to get one and i was only 396.4. Wow what a narrow minded approach. The bedside chair was a normal minimally padded arm chair. It looked nice but i had trouble getting in it cause it wasn't wide enough. They want you to walk as much as possible. I tried to. The IV pole looked like trash. The wheels didn't roll well especially on that great carpet. The iv pump was half attached and half taped on. The pole didn't have a ring to hold onto so I had to hold the actual pole which caused me to stand too clos to the wheels. I keept tripping on the wheels. The bedside tray was ok but some of the wheels didnt roll at all. What a pain this was trying to move it right after surgery. I was in a double with some guy who was half dying with psychological problems and was loud and obnoxious. I assumed I would be alone or with other WLS people.

How Selected: A very close family member and doctor recommended the bariatric surgeon I used and this is the hospital he works from.
Competitors: This is by far the most fantastic hospital I have ever seen or stayed in. Imagine Room Service and an extensive menu? It feels and looks more like a Hilton and many of the staff had already had bariatric surgery so they are very in tune with the patients.
Comments: Everything was quite wonderful except for the recovery room nurses and staff. They were very cold and disorganized and somewhat rude. Family was ill informed of my condition and one nurse even questioned the need for pain meds immediately following surgery. They can't hold a candle to the rest of the staff on the floors.

How Selected: Previous reputation.
Competitors: Having been in several hospitals, it is easily the most beautiful hospital that I have seen, however, remember not to judge a book by it's cover.
Comments: Regretfully you cannot judge a book by it's cover. My pre-op was very professional and prompt. My type and screen was the same. However, I was called the night before surgery to come in early because there was a change in my time, then got in early and had to wait even longer than the initial time for surgery. When my surgery was complete, I had to wait an extra 6 hours to get a bed, only seeing my family briefly during the period of waiting. Once in the room the care was great, the nurse assigned to my room was wonderful, and I am sure that my impressions would have remained excellent had this nurse been assigned to me for the 5 day stay. I was transferred to another room in 2 days, and I had to do the transfer of phone and TV, even though I was told that it would be taken care of. On the 4th day my hanbd with the IV in it started swelling and I reported it to the nurse and she told me that it was normal, very early in the morning of the 5th day it became necessary to remove the IV because my hand was swollen like a balloon, was very painful, and I couldn't move my fingers. I don't know why, but I went through 3 IV pumps during my stay, with a two hour wait between pump 2 and pump 3 with no fluids (I was told they needed to locate a pump. I would like to have rated this hospital excellent, and many of the personnel obviously strive for it. Sadly, there are also employees that detract from the overall performance. I WOULD STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU HAVE A FAMILY MEMBER WITH YOU AS MUCH AS YOU CAN TO INSURE THAT YOU RECEIVE THE CARE THAT YOU NEED.

Competitors: I have only been in the hospital two other times for childbirth and was not incapacitated after childbirth, so I don't think it would be a fair comparison.
Comments: I really felt great about the hospital during the pre-op visits, but I felt that they dropped the ball on patient care. The call bell went unanswered and people sat at the nurses' station hearing the bell, but doing nothing about it. I do not fault the nurses because the first 2 nights of my stay were very busy, but I had no use for the people ignoring the call bells. I didn't expect them to help me personally, but to alert my nurse or aide to my call. Very disappointing.
