Comments: Each of the staff members of Great Lakes Weight Loss center were excellent. The surgical team I met on the morning of surgery (RN's, LPN's, Anesthiology team), etc. all had excellent bed side manners. The hospital's nursing, escort staff and nursing aids in the hospital were not so great. Nurses kept asking what type of surgery I had - continued to give me straws and were just not up to par. There were ONE overnight nurse who was extremely seasoned and was EXCELLENT.

How Selected: Harper is the only hospital that Blue Care Network approves as a Center of Excellence.
Competitors: This was my first experience at Harper. I have to say, I was pretty impressed. I had a private room, the nurses (except for one) were all very nice. I was very pleasantly surprised! I think my care was better at Harper than at any other hospital in the area.
Comments: The DMC campus is beautiful! WOW! I can't believe it is in Detroit. Detroit get such a bad rap. It is a very inviting atmosphere.

How Selected: My doctor is a surgeon there.
Competitors: Nice nursing staff for the most part. There is always that ONE nurse that you just didnt care for but everyone else was great.
Comments: Make sure you push the call nurse button WAY before you really need anything. They were a bit slow in getting back to you. For the most part I didnt really need the nurse much except for meds but it was a big problem when I had to go to the bathroom the first time and it took a half hour to get a nurse and 20 minutes more afterwards to get back to bed. I only had the lapband and felt I could do it by myself after the first time but others may need help with more invasive surgery. Another recommendation is just to have someone with you all the time to help push the nurses you way a little faster. The nurses were very nice but had multiple patients and were very busy.

Comments: Doctor's and Nurses excellent but, patient relations awful..I arrived at 4:30 am and was told by security that i would not be allowed down until 6 am (MY SURGERY SCHEDULED AT 5)...while sitting at security the admitting clerk was calling my house..I almost missed my surgery...not good..thank God a nurse walked in and took me down...so after the surgery was over i waited 5 hours on a bed.....not to mention i was first surgery of the day.....they forgot to place me on room assignment...:(....what a day....

How Selected: The internet.
Competitors: I thought the hospital was great until the day of my release. They left me sitting unattended in the front lobby with no pain meds for over an hour. They couild have told me and my son would have come and gotten me. Instead they left me sitting waiting on transportation in the front lobby. I hurt so badly I was crying by the time transportation picked me up. It was the worst situation I have been in.
Comments: The hospital was great but truly need to focus on making sure patients are taken care of the full time they are at the hospital. It was HORRIBLE to be stuck somewhere and I couldn't walk alone, had no pain medicine, and my son could have picked me up but they told me to tell him I would be at the hotel in less than 30 minutes. I suffered greatly due to their lack of care during discharge.

Comments: I haven't had my procedure yet but I had to go there for my EGD and it feels a little like a factory. I was scheduled on the same day as 15 other people for the very same morning for just one doctor??? I arrived on time and the intake process was very quick. My surgery wa scheduled for 8am but I was in pre op until around 11am. the attendant was nice but odd. I think she had been working there for a really long time. I have the biggest crush on my surgeon. He reminds me of a nice mad scientist. I love you Dr. Woods.

How Selected: Well...I did not select the hospital, but I selected the doctor and that is the hospital that he worked out of. The hospital was great.
Competitors: The medical staff was great, and very knowledgable. The hospital I normally go to I don't feel as comfortable. I would drive the distance if I really had too.
Comments: Very clean and accomodating for bariatric surgery. I loved that we had our own rooms, and did not have to share with anyone. Private and quiet.

How Selected: My Surgeon operates here and Garden City, I chose Harper.
Competitors: They are very responsive to patient needs and give top notch nursing care and make it a point to keep you in good pain control. My stay here was excellent and hands down a thousand times better than Huron Valley Hospital-one of their DMC sister facilities, where I had the opposite experience. Staff really cares here. Excellent, excellent nursing care.
Comments: Though the building is a little older it is CLEAN and the floors are spotless. The only thing I noticed is they depserately need new iv poles the wheels didn't roll well and they were hard to push while walking, and they need new gurneys the one I was on after surgery was very rickety & I was scared it would fall apart while I was on it as was the transport guy pushing me to my room. The discharge process was confusing and took 6 hours, this could be improved upon.

How Selected: This hospital was not given to me as an option. Dr. Wood works mainly out of this hospital. I was comfortable going there for the surgery because he has a history of being one of the top surgeons here in Detroit. So, if he worked out of his backyard I was going to be there! Just kidding. :)
Comments: The staff was excellent. I have heard stories in the past that the staff at Harper wasn't the best with overweight patients. I didn't have a problem at all and if I had to go back and do it all over again I would.

Competitors: I felt that the nursing staff was wonderful. Everyone made sure I was comfortable. It was actually better then a couple of the hospitals I have been to in my area.
Comments: The only negetive aspect was that I had to wait in recovery for over 8 hours while they discharged another patient. The nurses made sure that I had all my pain medication and was as comfortable as can be in the smaller beds.

Comments: Though the care i received in the i.c.u. was excellent, the bariatric unit sucked. One nurse in particular was the night nurse named denise. She was totally insensitive and was just plain mean. anytime i need anything or even some help it took her over an hour to get to me and then she was mad i bothered her. I would never recommend this hospital to anyone.

How Selected: My insurer only covered surgeons that worked at Harper.
Comments: I was not very pleased with Harper hospital. The nursing staff that worked in 2 Brush (my floor) were overstaffed and made it known to me. The speaker used for announcements was right next to my head, which went off frequently. However, I adored my surgeon and the OR staff and the ICU nurses were excellent. Also, I was very glad that I had my own room which offered privacy.

Comments: I was self pay - I was quoted one figure for the hospital charges. But now Harper Hospital is charging me an additional $12,000+. I am currently disputing these charges with Harper & Cori Centers. Prior to surgery I had asked for in writing the actual charges from the Hospital and Cori Centers neither would provide them. Now my worst fear has come true - that I would be charged more then what Cori had quoted for self-pay surgery. I am very disappointed. I would never have gone with Cori or Harper Hospital if I knew it would cost this much. Barix only charges a flat fee of $25,000.
