How Selected: My surgeon selected the hospital. I selected him and this is the hospital he performs the surgery at. My surgeon came highly recommended and after I met with him several times, he was the right one.
Competitors: The after surgery care was not good for me. The surgeon and surgery went well but the nurses and nurses in training where not effective or sensitive to my pre-existing conditions and after surgery needs.
Comments: This WAS a good hospital. There have been a lot of changes and not all for the better. There was one or two nurses for the entire floor, the rest were nursing students, so they could not provide the services a registered nurse could. Therefore I had to wait for the nurse to finish with one patient before it was my turn. I had to undergo a second surgery because the drainage tube snapped. In recovery before going back to my room I woke up in pain and the nurse would not give me any pain medicine. This was unsat. I had to wait until I was in my room before given medication for pain. I had other pre-existing conditions that were not properly addressed until I insisted they be taken care of. If I knew prior to the surgery what I know now, I would NEVER have had the surgery performed at this hospital.

How Selected: My surgeon does his surgeries at this hospital only, so I really didn't have a choice.
Competitors: Since I am relatively new to this area, I really can't make a comparison.
Comments: These are some of the reasons why I feel Harrisburg Hospital wasn't the "best" place to have my surgery: 1) After I was checked in, they took me to the area where I was to change and get in my bed. They did Very little testing before I had my surgery. They didn't even WEIGH me prior to going to the OR. They used the weight that the Dr. had from my initial visit to him which was 4 months prior to my surgery. How accurate is that reading? 2) During my stay there, I wasn't given a bed bath, or even asked about it once while I was in that hospital. My 2 sisters are RN's and they say that it totally unacceptable. So, from Tue to Fri, I was not bathed at all. The day before I was released, a nurse did give me a toothbrush to brush my teeth. 3) I had a roommate that kept ringing her call bell all night, and no one ever came back to answer her call. It was so irritating and even when I complained, the one nurse said that I wasn't in the hospital to get a good night's rest. That just horrified me. 4) The day I was released, they went to get me a wheelchair and came back with this normal sized wheelchair. I told them that I wouldn't be able to fit and they then attempted to locate me another one. After over an hour wait, they came back with the same chair stating that they couldn't locate another chair. I did make a complaint and someone did contact me regarding the complaints. The Rep did agree with my concerns and stated that they will try to work on them. As far as my Surgeon goes, he was great and I can't blame him for what the hospital did or didn't do. I just know that I won't go there again, that is if I can help it.

How Selected: Only hospital my surgeon does wls at.
Competitors: Harrisburg General was an average hospital as most that I have been at.
Comments: The only complaint I have is that when I was being discharge the nurse called for a wheelchair. It was a normal sized one-thankfully I just fit in it.

Competitors: I thought that the care I received Harrisburg General was excellent. I've been the patient of several hospitals and I'd have to say that my care at Harrisburg General was awesome.
Comments: The staff at this hospital was top of the line. They made me feel important, which is easily forgotten in hospitals today. I had maybe 3 people that I had contact with that were unpleasant but those encounters were brief and the kindness from the rest of the staff made up for it. I would highly recommend this hospital to anyone and I prefer it over my local hospital.
