How Selected: This is the hospital where Dr O'Malley's clinic is located.
Competitors: I am not familair with other Rochester hospitals.
Comments: Everyone was kind and caring and tries very hard; they are simply understaffed and overcrowded. There were patients in the corridors during my stay. Staff was slow to respond but not from laziness or lack of caring--they are quite simply overworked. I had no complications which required rapid response--I would assume they would all do their best in such a situation.

How Selected: Visted 2 others before deciding who I would be most comfortable with. Dr. O'Malley was by far the most competent Doctor that I met with. His office staff was pleasant, I didn't get a warm fuzzy feeling from them, however, they did their job and did it in a very professional, timely manner. I never had to deal with the insurance company. Dr. O'Malley doesn't do follow-up however he has an awesome NA, Ms. Coniglio, She very helpful and very quick to respond to any questions that I have.
Competitors: Very prompt and thorough!
Comments: All the nurse staff, OR staff, pre-admission staff where wonderful and very confident in what they did. One nurse was a bit witchy during the first night after my surgery, I told her how bad my IV was hurting, but she kept pumping all my meds through it. By morning my hand was the size of a lg. grapefruit, very hot and extremely painful. The am nurse immediately changed it. This made my life a bunch eaiser. If I hadn't been so out of it with the morphine, I might have gave her a piece of my mind. The same nurse who wouldn't change my IV also came in to draw blood. I told her that I always need a butterfly needle in a certain spot. She informed me that the staff used the size need according to their ability. Well guess what, 4 pokes later and 2 different nurses, she decided that it would be OKAY for them to try a butterfly in my prefered vein. Guess what, it worked like a charm. GRRRR! Anyway there always has to be one bad apple to spoil the whole cart. Overall my surgery was a breeze. I would do it again in a heart beat.

How Selected: Dr. O'Malley and his team practice at Highland
Competitors: Highland is a very good hospital. I had many tests and everyone was good-natured and pleasant. I have been to 2 other Rochester hospitals and felt that Highland was the best yet.
Comments: I had good nurses and techs. I did feel that I had to ask them what they were giving me each time. But there weren't any mistakes. I do not recommend taking your own medicine. They did not return it to me and I had to pay for a new prescription out of pocket. I had good care from all of the doctors too. Most of them came back to see me and to see how I was doing. That meant a lot to me. Dr. O'Malley & Staff were great too. He visited often and so did his interns. I had a good experience overall.

Comments: While I was very pleased with how well the hospital was equipped to handle overweight patients and the privacy of the room I had, I felt there were not enough RNs on duty, and while the nurse techs were plentiful, they were not able to do anything more than take vitals and go get the RN. I also thought that some of the nurse techs were careless and thoughtless when it came to dealing with pain from a blown out IV that I had when they were trying to get vitals.

How Selected: It's my surgeons hospital but I have also had two prior surgeries there and love it!
Competitors: Small enough that you are still a person and not just "the patient in room 419-2". Staff was very friendly and helpful but at times they did seem to be too busy. When things were calmer, they did come around more often. The place was hopping at times.
Comments: Very happy with Highland Hospital. It is easy to get around in and people will help with directions if you need them. Facility was very clean and staff is helpful and pleasant. TV and phone were ready to go when I got to my room and I was able to control the temperature myself (loved the AC unit...LOL). Bed was totally adequate and fairly comfortable. No complaints here!

How Selected: Highland Hospital is where Dr. William O'Malley has his practice and performs gastric bypass operations. As I am his patient, this is where I had my Roux-en-y lap. completed.
Competitors: Highland Hospital is much smaller than Strong Memorial, although part of the same family. It is very "intimate" feeling, and there is a dedicated wing to those patients who have had Dr. O'Malley as their surgeon. They have wonderful accommodations for overweight patients (such as the beds, wheelchairs, scales, etc.), and they did an excellent job with the post-op menus and meals (my mother had gastric bypass surgery at another local hospital who goofed up the menu with each meal during her stay). The staff was very kind and caring; the nursing staff was superb. Dr. O'Malley stopped by each day throughout the weekend that I was there to check on myself and his other patients. I would highly recommend Highland Hospital for gastric bypass surgery and follow-up care.
Comments: Overall, it was a pleasure to stay at Highland. I felt well cared for, and follow-up was very thorough.
