Comments: I had problems with 2 nurses. First Roy in recovery. He needed me to sit up so they could get an x-ray. When I told him I was in pain he told me I could have something "after" when I told him no, now he said " Jesus Christ" and went and got it. Then yanked me up for the film. I dont remember much of recovery but I do remember him. 11-7 charge nurse Laura, as a fellow nurse often working charge myself, if a patient needs something, and your floor nurses are busy, get off your big lazy butt and get it. There was no reason I had to lay in my bed listening to the IV Complete alarm for an hour while you sat at the desk laughing and joking with the LNA's. I even came to you at the nurses station and you still did nothing.

Competitors: Well equipped, well staffed. A small hospital capable of giving one on one care and attention.
Comments: Highly recommended. The entire staff of Highland is very compassionate and caring. There was only one employee I didn't care for - her name was Dee. She had a snooty attitude! Thankfully, I only saw her once, but that was enough!

How Selected: Dr. Hall uses this hospital. It was highly recommeneded by all of his patients
Competitors: This is by far the best. Small...which is great. The one on one attention that can be given because of it's size is something you won't find in a larger hospital!!
Comments: I had to stay an extra 2 days because of some small complications. I was running fevers and vomiting. My family didn't expect this, and since the third floor had a rec room that was dedicated to bariatrics patients only, and I was the only bariatric patient on the floor at the time, they put cots in the room for my husband and two children and allowed them to spend both nights there. They fed them, and treated them FANTASTICALLY!!! They were the best. The completely understand financially hardships, and unexpected events that can arise. They don't make you feel like just another number. They were very sympathatic with me and treated me like I was the only patient on the floor. Highland is wonderful. Don't let their small image fool you. They could put a bigger hospital to shame any day!!!

How Selected: I didn't select the hospital, my surgeon does most of his surgeries at this hospital which is right next door to his office.
Competitors: I really couldn't compare it. It is so much smaller and on a different scale than the hospitals I am familiar with
Comments: It was a clean, friendly place. No hub-bub, very quiet, as a matter of fact when I was there it was more like a morgue. There were a couple of nurses that left alot to be desired beside manner wise.. but then all the others were truly wonderful.

How Selected: Dr. Hall is affiliated w/ this hospital
Comments: The hospital was responsive to me everytime I needed something but being a bariatric patient they won't bring things to you - you have to go to the nurse's station to get it. Dr. Hall doesn't want you lying in bed all day so they only allow 1 nap a day and then you have to be out of the bed the rest of the day.

Competitors: This is a nice, clean hospital, small, but very up to date.
Comments: I thought that the ICU unit was wonderful, allowing family to come and go as they wished, which was so nice ! Then once moved to the 3rd floor, The nurses were all very helpful, and especially Rose, who has been doing this for over 20 years ! She was knowledgable and considerate of my issues, and did more than her share of taking care of all my needs. She should be awarded a medal of excellence in both personality and spirit !

Competitors: It was fine. It's old, so they are updating it, and it was in progress while we were there.
Comments: The building was fine. What needed attending to was the number of hours the nurses had per shift. 16 hour shifts do not make for an attentive nurse!

Comments: I thought Highland Medical was a fine hospital, but the nurses were lacking in care. The LVN's were incredible, and seemed to do all the work. I tended to watch the RN's sit a LOT! I walked by their station 10-12 times a day, and the LVN's and VISITING NURSES were the only ones who came to the room to assist me in any matter. I think a supervisor needs to keep a better watch on his/her staff.

How Selected: Dr. David Hall only does the surgery out of Highland medical. I didn't have a choice but it was a perfect hospital with 100% private rooms and even an activity room reserved exclusively for Weight Loss Patients.
Competitors: Small but very professional and capable staff.
Comments: I have no negatives about this hospital...the activity room was great. Many of the WLS patients and their families took their meals to the activity room and we ate together. They also keep a VCR and a stack of movies their to help you fight the boredom.

How Selected: This Hospital is in the Images Program (Compass). My Dr. Elected to leave Cypress Fairbanks Hospital when they cancelled all surgeries in June. I was very leery of travelling from Houston Tx to Lubbock, Tx for my surgery. All in all it was a very good experience. I stayed there from July 5th through July 7th 2002, and can think of nothing bad to say about my time there.
Competitors: It is an older hospital was but very clean and and manitained. The staff were always ready to assist even if they were not called. This is from administration to nursing & personal care.

How Selected: The surgeon I chose, Dr. David Hall works out of this hospital. His weight loss practice (Images) is based out of Highland Medical Center and they perform WLS there year round.
Competitors: Highland is a small hospital, but it is perfect for this type of surgery. It made my recovery time in the hospital easier and more comfortable because I wasn't in a huge facility where I could have ended up being a bed number rather than a name.
Comments: Highland Medical has devoted the larger part of the 3rd floor of their hospital to WLS patients. The nurses and staff are well trained and I felt they did an excellent job at providing the assistance and care a patient needs following this type of operation.

Comments: Overall, a very positive experience. This is a small hospital. Dr. Hall probably is this hospital's biggest customer. I thought the care I received was very good. The only negative about it was the haphazard way things are left out in the hallway. The appearance of beds, cots and other things in the hall gave the impression of a less than professional place. But other than that, I found the nurses very helpful, professional in their demeanor, and courteous to the sensitivities of overweight people.
