How Selected: There were oinly two where my surgeon operated. I did not like my other option.
Competitors: It was fast, clean, beautiful and really great. I found the staff very responsive and kind. In other hospitals I have found staff less attentive.
Comments: It was a great experience. The staff was very knowledgable about the bariatric patient and the have 24 hour visitation. They were very accommodating.

How Selected: This is the closest hospital my insurance (Kaiser MidAtlantic) recommends. I've been a patient there before and have always been very pleased with the care.
Comments: My hospital experience was outstanding. Jeanne Ferber, the wls advocate, was excellent at keeping my family and I informed. She made a point of checking in with me daily and made sure I had her direct phone number in case I had any surgery-specific questions. I had a private room (again THANK YOU, Jeanne!) that was comfortable and quiet. The nursing staff was caring and compassionate. I barely waited any time at all between pushing the call button and having a nurse at my bedside. They were even wonderful about applauding my efforts at tough stuff like getting out of bed and walking loops around the floor! I really like the fact that there are no regulated "visitor's hours". It allowed my family to come and go as they could and had I wanted it, someone could have stayed with me the entire time. Registering for my surgery and my pre- and post-op experiences were efficient and professionally handled. And the anesthesiologist did an AMAZING job. I have never come out of surgery feeling as good as I did this time. One final comment, both my mom and my DH were very complimentary about the food in the café. My food was pretty bland (DUH! How exciting can clear broth and sugar free jello be???) but they were actually excited about eating at Holy Cross.

How Selected: The nurses were great but the floor was VERY VERY noisy. I was only there overnight, but I got little to no sleep.
Competitors: The hospital has been re-modeled, but the rooms need it more than just the facade. Other hospital i've been to in the area are a bit cleaner and newer.

How Selected: I HAD A CHOICE OF EITHER PROVIDENCE HOSPITAL OR HOLY CROSS. A FRIEND OF MINE SUGGESTED THAT HOLY CROSS' BARITATRIC TEAM WAS A LOT BETTER THAN THOSE AT PROVIDENCE. I TOOK HER ADVISE. I MUST SAY THAT I'M NOT TOO SURE ABOUT HOW TRUE HER STATEMENT WAS BUT I'M PLEASED WITH MY DECISION.
Competitors: TO KNOW THAT I HAD A 'BARIATRIC TEAM' WORKING AROUND THE CLOCK WITH ME DURING MY STAY MEANT A LOT TO ME. THIS HOSPITAL IS A LOT BETTER AS FOR PARKING AND CLEANLINESS. LET ME ALSO ADD THAT I FELT LIKE I WAS GOING TO BE IN A LUXURY SUIT JUST BY THE LOOKS OF THE LOBBY. GREAT SET UP!! HOWEVER, I CAN'T JUSTLY COMPARE HOLY CROSS TO ANY OTHER HOSPITAL FOR THE SURGERY OR THE BARIATRIC TEAM. I'VE ONLY HAD THE SURGERY ONCE. (~~smile~~~)
Comments: GENERALLY, THIS HOSPITAL WAS GREAT. IF YOU HAVE THIS HOSPITAL AS ONE OF YOUR PICKS; I STRONGLY SUGGEST HOLY CROSS HOSPITAL

How Selected: My surgeon had available dates @ this hospital. I had been to a seminar @ it previously and liked what I had seen.
Competitors: My other comparison would be Washington Adventist. I think both of them have a wonderful level of care, I had no problem going to either.
Comments: The hospital and staff were good, but for the rest and quiet that was ALL because of a horrible roommate. Even the nursing staff was annoyed with my roommate, and I was glad to go home and rest!

Comments: The hospital was under construction which I think had its advantages. FREE parking lol. There was above average noice but I just think that was because my door stayed open. I did not have a private room but I heard it was a slow cpl of days so no one moved in to the bed next to me. I do not think I could have been in a room with someone.

How Selected: I had planned to have my surgery at another area hospital, but on the day I wanted to have my surgery, my surgeon was working at this hospital. So I switched hospitals, because the date of my surgery was more important than the location
Competitors: This was the first time I've ever stayed in the hospital. I've only visited other people in the hospital before. However, I must say that I liked Holy Cross more than most of the other hospitals I have visited people at. They've recently renovated the hospital, so everything is pretty new and clean. And it doesn't smell like other hospitals I've been in.
Comments: The staff at the hospital was great! For the most part, I really liked staying at Holy Cross. I had one nurse who hadn't worked with a lot of bariatric patients before, so he was a little slow to meet my needs, but he really put an effort into making sure I was taken care of. Unfortunately, I shared a room with someone who had very inconsiderate guests who where very noisy when they came to visit her. Even when they'd walked past my bed and saw that I was sleep they'd talk loudly, etc. I wish the staff would have done something about this. My biggest problem was with the radiology staff on the day after my surgery when they took me down to make sure my pouch didn't have any leaks. It seems that they just couldn't understand why I couldn't swallow a large amount of the stuff they use to see the pouch in the x-ray and the kept yelling at me and threatening me about taking large gulps of this stuff and I ended up throwing up all over everything.

How Selected: My surgeon performs sugery at three area hospitals and this on had the earliest opening for surgery.
Competitors: The hospital is very nice and clean. Does not have a "institutional feel" or the "hospital smell"
Comments: I think Dr. Fullum needs to provide his own nurses to deal with his patients. The nursing staff gets quite busy and it takes them a while to respond until you start threatening to have your surgeon paged. They continually brought me the wrong diet. I was supposed to have sugar free or diabetic food and they brought regular. No one told me that I was supposed to dilute the apple juice until later in the night so I was nauseated. I called down for CIB and was told that they did not have it... I asked to walk for 6 hrs before they let me get out bed and only because my angel turned the hospital out. The staff is really nice, just not on top of things like they should be...

Competitors: I liked it better than Shady Grove Adventist and Washington Adventist. I've never been hospitalized at either place, but my husband has.
Comments: The overall experience was not bad. Once or twice I had to wait a very long time to get the bandage over my drain changed. By the time the nurse was able to get to me, the gauze was soaked and very uncomfortable. But the nurses are extremely busy there and I know they do the best they can.

How Selected: It's the only hospital where my surgeon operates and it's fairly close to my home.
Competitors: Have never been hospitalized before, so can't compare but if others are worse, God help us.
Comments: For extremely large patients (over 400 lbs.), the staff are untrained in helping to lift/move patients, helping them get out of big chairs without hurting themselves, giving them hygiene care, washing them. Privacy doesn't exist. Private rooms are impossible to get without connections. Some nurses are rude and inattentive, even when you're in pain. You get NO sleep. Some staff were very nice and some were inconsiderate. You're at their mercy.

Competitors: I have only stayed at one other hospital (in Frederick MD) and I was much more comfortable in Frederick than I was at Holy Cross.
Comments: The night nurses were wonderful, but the day shift was terrible. I would press the button for help and no one would come. Once I dropped my morphine button and beeped and no one came and I had to yell for help when the pain got to bad. They did not change my bed until almost 12 pm and they said it was because they ran out of linen (on both days). I asked if they could help me with a bed bath, and the nurse brought me a towel and a washcloth and left it and said there you go. Thank god my husband and mom were there. They helped me with everything during the day. The day nurses really sucked. The night shift was wonderful.

How Selected: My Dr performs his surgery there. The hospital was very nice, but I never saw a big boy bed as was told. ICU was great. Very attentive to every need and helpful. I was there 4 days due to a flu epidemic. Once I moved to my regular room all help was gone. My sheets were never changed, I was never assisted with bathing, and I was never once walked in the 3 days there.
Competitors: Other that 5 day with a c-section I have never been in a hospital for more than a day. So it is hard to compare.
Comments: In general it was good, not great. But the most important part was my Dr who was wonderful and saw me everyday.
