Comments: So I hope I never have to stay in the hospital overnight ever again! I am huge germaphobe and that just put me over the edge!! The bed was sooo uncomfortable and with all the activity going on there, I felt like my bed was in the middle of I95... Just my opinion, I know the hospital staff is overworked and stressed, so nothing agains them, I just am a big baby!!

Comments: I had one really good nurse and she was the 3rd shift nurse. She was very attentive and answered any questions that I had. The rest of the nurses never once asked if I wanted to walk or even came in to just check up on me. I was often left for hours without a someone stopping in.

Competitors: I work in a hospital and where I work there would have been more privacy. As well as visting hours would have been used properly.
Comments: The nurses were great! All my nurses went to special training to help take care of people like us. The techs were also great. Just the hospital rooms are so small for 2 people that u dont get much privacy.

Competitors: The bed that I spent three days in, was so narrow, I was not able to lay on my side. I had to sit sideways in the wheelchair,'picture that'.
Comments: The rooms were filthy. I never saw anyone, in three days, clean or empty the garbage, or remove dirty old dressings from God knows whose wound they came from. The nurses were scarce and had very little time to answer questions. I have lost 200 pounds since Feb.2002, but I cannot forget what a hole I stayed in for those 3 days.

How Selected: I chose the surgeon first and then verified that the hospital was in-network for my insurance.
Competitors: Midstate Medical Center in Meriden, CT is newer and quieter and the last time I was there I had a private room. But St. Rafe's bariatric center is one of the best and I felt safer choosing their center over Midstate's.
Comments: The bariatric wing is extremely busy so the nurses are not always available and you have to ring for them more than three times and sometimes yell to get their attention but overall my 2 day stay was good. When I left there was a 30 minute wait for a wheelchair so I decided to walk to the parking lot instead of waiting.

How Selected: My surgeon uses this hospital
Competitors: I have only experienced Saint Raphaels - I had my twin boys there 6 years ago and they were FANTASTIC - just this time was horrible !!!
Comments: Let me first say that I understand that nurses are underpaid and units are understaffed so this is in no way PERSONAL against any nurse (except a few - lol) - my two day stay was like a torture chamber - I roomed with a woman who was dying of cancer and had MAJOR diahrea (sp?) ALL NIGHT - housekeeping came to our room 3 times a night to wash the floors in the bathroom - thank god I had a cathetar - she talked all day long - moaned and whined and when I rang for a nurse before I could speak she demmanded something from them - the bed was uncomfortable - the room was set to 75 degrees - I requested a fan and due to lack of outlets I had to unplug the bed to plug in the fan - so if I needed to go up or down to rest or sleep - I had to crawl under my bed to plug it in and unplug the fan (without which I couldnt breath) - remember this is one day post-op - hooked to ivs and a cathater under my bed so I can get a few mins sleep before you hear those dreaded words - VITALS!! I am convinced this is all payback for eating too much junk in my life - if so ok, I can accept that. The hospital stay was like a weekend of hell for me though....I felt better as soon as I left those halls - not to mention the floor we were on - Verdi 5 west - was also a spill over for ER patients that were dying - so needless to say the nurses were rarely available they were tending to the people that were dying - which was about 3 in those two days - I think.

Competitors: Personal preference. From what I've seen just visiting patients in other hospitals in the area I would not want to be any other place.
Comments: Though very noisy and lack of regular housekeeping was evident I feel the staff was in tune with obesity surgery and the patients. Most of the staff was attentive and capable given the number of patients and how busy it was the whole time I was there.

Comments: I was there over a weekend, and it was short staffed. But it literally took over 3 hours to receive response to ANY request. Fortunately, I didn't have too much pain, but it got to the point where I had to disconnect my own IV, shuffle my sore self to the front desk and stand there staring at them until I finally got help. HOWEVER, I still highly recommend this surgeon. I only hope mine was an unusually bad experience.

How Selected: It was the hospital my surgeon is affiliated with.
Competitors: The hospital located in my town is a lot quieter than St. Rapeal's. I stayed in Greenwich hospital a few times. The noise level wasn't as bad at St. Rapeal's during the evening but the day shift was very noisey. I believe it is just because there is more staff scheduled during the day. I found it very difficult to dose off and take a nap when needed.
Comments: I believe St. Rapeal's is an old hospital and it needs a lot of updating. The patient rooms are very outdated and the same with the restrooms.

How Selected: I did not have an option when selecting a hospital for this surgery as St. Ray's was the only hospital that my surgeon practiced at.
Comments: Although this was, overall, a very good hospital, I have concerns over the lack of communication between the surgical and anesthesia staff when it comes to managing pain control. Although both services need to be communicating in order to provide the patient with optimal pain control, their communication and follow-up was poor.... in fact almost non-existant. Anyone who goes into surgery in this hospital that had chronic pain issues needs to be very aware of their very poor follow-up. You must have someone there to fight for your rights and get you adequate pain control!!!

Competitors: This was my first experience with being in the hospital, however I was very happy with the level of care I was provided.
Comments: The staff were all very experienced in caring for overweight patients. They made it very easy to ask for assistance with whatever was needed: be it a boost back into bed, or a sponge bath. The unit was very noisy especially during the overnight hours. The beds could have been bigger and a bit more comfortable.

How Selected: It is where my surgeon operates and where is business is located.
Competitors: I liked it much better. I would never go to Bristol, and New Britain is not that great. I felt comfortable there and everyone was nice.
Comments: There are a few things I would change though. One is the beds, my god you are uncomfortable as it is and getting in and out of an air matress is the pits. The recliners were scarce and there is just not enough room in the room for them if you are semi-private. The other is the food service, they were slow and confused. Breakfast did not come until 10am lunch at 3pm then dinner at 7pm and the nurses had to chase the trays down! Grant you, you are on liquids, but after 2 days of none, when they tell you that you can have them you want them!
