| My Doctor was affilliated with this hospital and I also gave birth to both my children here and trusted their medical expertise. |
| Competitors: |
My feeling is that you might as well be at the best place to start out in case of problems ( such as childbirth & bariatrics) rather than being transfered after a problem arises. |
| Comments: |
I will always put Hurley on the top of my list of area hospitals. They helped in the birth of my children and gave me a chance at a new life after bariatric surgery. |

I have stayed at Genesys for a surgical procedure years ago and it was like night and day. The nurses there were considerate, well trained, and professional. |
| Comments: |
At Hurley the nurses would yells at each other done the hall in the middle of the night, sing songs, and wild laughing was heard as if a party was going on. I was almost given someone else's medication but I spotted the nurse hanging the IV and asked what it was, thank god. She realized it wasn't for me. She also tried to give me a whole large pill in the middle of the night, and thank god again I wasn't asleep because of all the goings on, and I told her I shouldn't have whole pills. Otherwise I might have just taken it. There were also other nurses that were very bad and tried to do the least amount they had to. The whole nursing staff, in my and my husband's opinion was undertrained and unprofessional. There were a couple of excemptions. All and all, it was a hell of an experience.
I do want to say the the Physician Assistant was great and so was my surgeon and the whole surgery team. However, the nursing staff was the worst I have ever experienced and I hope I never have to go back there again!! |

| Hurley is where the surgeon I chose to see, operates. |
| Competitors: |
Having been in many other hospitals over the years (mostly as a professional, rarely as a patient), I have to say that Hurley was on par with other good institutions. My most recent inpatient experience was at UM and Huley did exceed that experience with the responsiveness of the staff. |
| Comments: |
I have read very poor reviews of Hurley and was prepared for a bad experience. I am a healthcare professional and was planning that I'd likely have to take care of myself, but I was pleasantly suprised. I was cared for by float nurses and orientees but that didn't bother me a bit, they were all very good. I did refuse a few things (scheduled blood sugar checks) because I felt they were unneccessary, but I was convinced by two nurses to allow two of the four ordered. They offered good reasons to do them (which is what I was looking for) and I agreed. I and my roommate were awakened at 0400am for our labs to be drawn, but that is just the way surgical units work. Surgeons want their numbers before they round in the morning and the way to get those numbers is to have labs drawn that early. No problem.
I was having issues with a low heart rate and lots of ectopy (funny little beats) and was very fortunate that I had float nurses from Caridac ICU caring for me. They, like me, didn't really freak out at all about them. I knew it was okay, and fairly normal for me, and so did they. The regular Burn Unit (where I was housed) nurses were a little freaked out, so it truly was fortunate that the cards RN's were taking care of me. I guess I received some Atropine (to speed up my heart rate which got into the 30's) in the OR and when I asked my surgeon about it, he said that he hadn't known about it until after the case was done. I was glad that anesthesia (I had a CRNA student) too the inititive to intervene without interrupting the case. Impressive.
Though I was housed in the Burn Unit, I was bunked with another LapBand patient. I had read a review where someone was bunked with a burn patient and was hoping I wouldn't be. Only because they need to eat, eat, eat and me being NPO it would be hard to handle smelling a roommate's food.
Day two found me not seeing my nurse(s) until after 11:00am, but the Charge RN came in and took care of my needs. My nurse and her orientee (who just left the hospital where I work-and was a cardiac ICU nurse) had one other patient who was a big burn and those dressings can take hours. That was why I hadn't seen them. Again, someone else may have rated that as poor, but I understand the time needed for that level of care.
The only other negative I can think of was my poor husband didn't get to eat anything (we arrived at the hospital at about 6:50am) until after I got settled in my room at about 4:00pm. The communication was lacking after the surgeon came to chat with him and told him that he could probably see me in about an hour. No one ever called for him to see me post-op and when he asked the volunteers at the desk, they were unable to help.
One thing that did strike both my DH and I was that EVERYONE was SOOO nice at Hurley, from the personnel to the other families and patients. It was all in all a good experience and I would not hesitate encourage someone to go there for Bariatric Surgery (caveat: with Dr. Wagner). |

I was really grateful that someone mentioned bringing my headphones. I ended up sharing a room with a little old lady that snored and talked in her sleep. It would've been much more appropriate for me to be paired with another bariatric patient or at least another surgery patient. This other woman had just suffered a stroke. Other than that, the staff were very helpful and kind. The pharmacy in the building was convenient for getting my scripts before coming home. |

The only complaint I have was that the bariatric patients are on the same floor as the burn patients and my roommate was a burn patient who received a regular menu and was always eating, talking about food and people were always bringing her food. It was not a good combination for someone who couldn't/didn't want to eat. Ironically, she had wls 3 1/2 years ago so she should have been more sympathetic but she was not. |

The quality of care was about the same, very good. The attitudes of the staff, all of the staff, was much better than any of the other hospitals I've been at. |
| Comments: |
My initial contact at Hurley Medical Center was with the pre-admission testing staff. My husband and I both knew immediately that this friendly, but very professional, group of people had their act together. Everything from checking in, breathing tests, blood draws, and meeting with the internal medicine specialist, Dr. Minasian, went smooth as silk, and all bases were covered. The day I went in for my surgery, they were ready for me in every way. The nursing staff was friendly, they all expressed their happiness and good wishes for me, got me all set for surgery, and I was on my way. Wonderful. I didn't have time to get scared or worked up, they were ready to rock and roll! The OR staff was so proficient, the anesthesiologist was fun, and I love Dr. Obeid...I did sleep through surgery :-). They communicated well with my husband, I got to see before I went to my room, then he was there and they got me settled...I had a wonderful room mate, our nurses were extremely attentive and responsive and all so encouraging. When it came time for any changes, like cleared to be off the monitor, time to go for testing, cleared for liquids, cleared to take oral pain meds, have IV discontinued...and time to go home...man, they got it done. It was great. My overall comment about Hurley Medical Center is that if I have to go to a hospital again, I would ask to go to Hurley...and I live by and have worked at the University of Michigan Hospital. |

I have been in McLaren Hospital also, I felt that I was treated with more compassion at Hurley |
| Comments: |
When I was admitted for my surgery on April 14, 2004, I was still very scared. I knew that I had to have the surgery and I had a lot of confidence in my surgeon, Dr. Obeid. From the beginning until I was released I felt that I was treated very well and I was confident that I was going to do alright. The only problem, minor, that I had was with being awakened about every two hours during the night. I realize it was necessary, however, I was unable to get a good nights sleep. Dr. Obeid was very considerate and I felt very confident with him as my surgeon. Also, it helped to know that he is the Chief of Trauma and Surgery at Hurley. I am very glad that I decided to have my surgery done at Hurley. I can't thank them enough for what they did for me. I never realized that I could feel as good as I do now. Once again a great big thanks to all the staff at Hurley!!!! |

The staff that took care of me was outstanding. The facility was clean and well cared for. I would recommend this hospital to anyone thinging of having this surgery. |

I have only one other to compare in the same area and that is McLaren. I find Hurley to be superior. |

I cannot say enough positive things about the care I received at Hurley Hospital. While taking care of my physical needs, the staff was also teaching me what I needed to do when I went home. I experienced an unusual event in the death of my nephew while I was hospitalized. I was given emotional support way beyond what I would have expected. They were wonderful. |

| Had a very good reputation with bariatric surgery. |
| Competitors: |
It is in a bad part of town, but the quality of care is good. Genesys Regional Health Center in Grand Blanc is a hospital I like, but it doesn't do alot of bariatric surgeries. It is great for heart related problems and ob/gyn. |
| Comments: |
I thought Hurley was a good hospital for bariatric surgeries, but some of the nursing staff could be more attentive. It was also very noisy. I would recommend this hospital for bariatric surgery. |

I experienced a great deal of nausea and vomiting on day 4, that kept me for one extra day. They had difficulty getting medication from the pharmacy, so instead of IV meds, I had to receive several shots. Upset me a little. |

I think Hurley is the best choice. I think they allow you to stay for the days you need to and they keep you on the burn unit which is intensive care so you get great personal attention. I found the nurses and everyone very nice. They even let my youngest son come up to the waiting room just inside the door to the floor. He was too young to come onto the floor (you have to be 12 or 14 I think to come up to intensive care) but they let him wait there and I walked down to spend a few minutes with him. |

| From information sent to me by their Center for Comprehensive Weight Loss.
I haven't been to their facility yet but the staff at CCWL have been BEYOND courteous and helpful over the past year. I couldn't have asked for a more caring support staff. |

I had surgery on Tuesday and finally HAD TO ASK ON FRIDAY if I could have clean linens. It was the only time my bed was changed and I left on Sunday. No one came in to clean my room other than the trash. Was not told about the large shower area, was expected to shower in a very tiny stall in my room. Waited a minimum of an hour whenever pain med was requested, AND HAD THE MOST HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE IN MY LIFE WHILE HAVING MY CATHETER CHANGED BECAUSE IT WOULD ONLY DRAIN WHEN I STOOD UP. Which the second one had the same problem but I kept quiet about it. |

The day staff was wonderful! Thay were curteous, kind, cheerful and helpful. The hospital was clean and well stocked with supplies. The night staff treated us like we were interrupting their card game. The were moody, rude and uncaring. When I complained about the night staff, the doctors and nurses said they knew it was going on, and that they were sorry it happened. They didn't seem like they were going to do any thing about it though. |
