The rooms are horribly small, especially the bathrooms. They need serious updating and should consider switching to private rooms. The rooms are so small that when I had more than one person visiting me I would go down to the waiting room to visit with them. I have had a lot of experience with this hospital as my brother has been in and out of there a LOT in the past year and a half. I knew the rooms were going to be small but didn't realize what an inconvenience they would be until I was a patient there. Kind of hard for a 250 pound swollen up person with catheters, IV's and drains to get around in. I visited someone at St Vincent Carmel not long after my surgery and was shocked at the difference in the facilities and the care they received. |

The staff was generally good, although there were too few of them. I guess that's normal wherever you go though. I ended up spending 6 days in hospital over Christmas.Probably would have been a more pleasant experience had I not had to have a room mate. She was very nice but also very sick. The worst thing was the first day I got to have anything by mouth was after 5 days. She had an iliostomy and the bag broke, so you can imagine the stench while I was trying to enjoy my first meal. Not her fault, but again if they didn't put the WLS patients in with the general population or you had the option of a private room it would have been more pleasant. Also it's not that the floor was full..there were more empty rooms than full rooms but everyone was doubled up. |

The nursing staff was fabulous!! They were always there when I needed them and were very helpful. The bathroom could have been better. It was tiny (not meant for big people at all.) and the sink would not stop dripping. |

I had surgery on 11/3/04 and I was very pleased with the care I received. Nurses/staff were very responsive when I paged them and they all had a good bedside manner. There was not only my surgeon who checked in on me but also a team of physician interns who must have been assigned to my floor because I was seen daily by at least one intern per day. Everyone was very respectful and kind - it was such a relief since as patients we are all so vulnerable during our stay but thankfully I felt comfortable placing myself in the staffs' hands during this experience. Based on my experience, I would recommend this hospital to others receiving weight loss surgery. |

IU Hospital is excellent... It doesnt compare with any of the local hospitals in my area.. It is far superior |
| Comments: |
It was nice and clean, although the bathrooms and rooms were rather small. The staff was always ready to assist me with anything. It was hard to tell a dr from a resident. |

This is the worst hospital I've ever been in! |
| Comments: |
I was mostly ignored by the nursing staff. Nurses rarely checked my vitals, or my well-being. When I asked for help with things, I usually got an attitude, and would almost always have to wait. The first night out of surgery, I kept having problems with my IV. For some reason, it kept beeping, which meant I was getting no pain medications. I called the nurses station to ask for help. After waiting quite a while, the nurse came in, and basically told me it was my fault the IV was not working. When I got upset (crying), I was told that she didn't have to put up with my attitude and she walked out without fixing the IV. I went several hours with no pain medication. My room mate was a horrible old woman, who taunted me whenever the nurses left. When I complained, I was told I had no choice but to put up with it, because she was there first. It was an absolute horrible experience! I could not wait to go home! I will NEVER go to this hospital again! I wouldn't send my worst enemy to this hospital! I would like to say that there was one orderly, who was obese himself, that was the only ray of sunshine the entire time I was there. There was also one nurse, who came to take care of me the last day and half after my family raised hell with the hospital administration and threatened to sue, that was superb! |

I am unfamiliar with others in the area as far as me being a patient but my family have been patients and I would say privacy was much better. |

The hospital had knats. Yes baby flies. It was not the cleanest room in the world. The cleaning staff would just walk right in your room, not knock and they would clang around until finished. They never turn hall lights down, I had to ask to have door shut. They did not require or request family to leave in other rooms that were causing discomfort to other patients in other rooms. The nursing staff was ok. Except for a few that were complaining about having to work the holidays. One particular nurse Jennifer needed an attitude adjustment. I was left in a soiled gown with bloody fluids. When I asked for a new one she commented we do not keep your size on this floor. This was after 30 min. after I asked over the intercom, I decided to parade my nasty butt up the hall to the nurse sation, let another nurse take a look, not to mention my iv was a humming and the nurse Jennifer had known about that as well. When she did bring me one she just had to mention in haste she had to go to another floor to get it. I never received much assistance in and out of the potty either. If they seen you were able to walk you were on your own. I did however have some very good nurses she was just a bad experience and shood find another proffesion. |

| Comments: |
IU does very few of these procedures and the staff is not very well equipped to deal with us. It was a very busy floor. I did very well post-op and required very little attention or pain medication. They were always available when I needed them, but I can't say the same for the other patients on the floor. My experience was not very positive but that is because I had a VERY annoying, light riding roomate! I couldn't go home fast enough! One thing that bothered me later was that the staff never offered to get me any sugar free popsickles or other flavors of sugar free jello ( I always got lime- yuk!). |

I was in the progressive care unit for 5days. During that time, the service
of care given to me, was horrible, with
the exception of the 2different 7am-7pm shift nurses, that cared for me 2days each out of 4. The Angel nurses were,Joan, and Michelle at I.U. Medical Center, Progressive Care Unit. Had it not been for these 2ladies turning me once,on each day during their shift, I was not moved or assisted from my bed.
Not a cold wash cloth, or ice chip, from the other, without having to ring the bell, many, many times..... |
| Comments: |
General comments regarding my thoughts on any hospital.....You understaff, and put too much stress on those professionals that do work, causing them
to give horrible care to very sick, and dependant patients, who are helpless. It is
frightening to be a patient in a hospital, even when you have a family advocate
sitting with you, round the clock.... |

I don't know anything about the other hospitals in the area of this one. I'm from about 3 hours away. |
| Comments: |
I was very disappointed in my care while in the hospital. Some of the nurses were great but there were times when I didnt' see a nurse for several hours after change of shift. Also, there was very little continuity of care. Sometimes I'd switch nurses evey four hours, depending on shift overlap. It took them 2 hours and me turning my call light on 3 times before anyone came to attend to my IV pump that was beeping. I am an IV nurse and knew that it was okay and just needed to be reset, but they didnt know that. It could have caused my central line IV to clot off, had it been another problem. I had the roommate from hell and asked to be moved. The nurse told me she asked the charge nurse but that was the last I heard from her. The charge nurse never came to talk to me and I wasn't moved. I spent 5 days in a room with a woman moaning and crying out all day, all night. To say the least, I didn't get much rest. At times I felt like they were avoiding my room.
All in all, I'd give my hospital stay a poor rating. The day surgery area where I was prepped for surgery was very good. The nursed were friendly and attentive and everything went smoothly there. |

I was no impressed by this hospital. There was a large lack of communication and I was the one who suffered from it. The nurses and doctors never talked and the communiction between the surgeons and the residents is even worse. I was injured during surgery that resulted in major complications. As a result I had 5 different doctors giving me conflicting instructions. I was usually confused and already in pain. If it hadn't been for my family fighting to keep all of the instruction and information strait I may have had a much worse outcome. |
| Comments: |
My general comment is that I would not reccommend this hospital to anyone. Almost everyone I met after surgery had some kind of problem. One person had to be reopened because of a raging infection, one person stayed several extra days because she could not keep food or water down, and I was in days when my esophogus was torn by the anesthesiologist putting in my NT Tube. I ended up with a blood transfusion, 4 days on life support, 8 days in intensive care, and 14 days in the hospital. I came home on IV's and could not eat or drink anything by mouth for more that 6 weeks. |
